It's a lifestyle. It truly isn't for everyone. You either get sucked into an can't live without it or you hate it. But you really have to know what you are doing.

I'm not into monohulls all that much but this Sunbeam is a real beauty. The flared deck over the bow could properly be called a _prow._ A word not often heard these days but on old wooden sailing ships the section of the foredeck that projected outward and forward of the bow was the prow. Glad to see a modern incarnation and great idea.

definitely for fair weather sailors only. In contrast to unbridled praise for the return of the prow, one might also consider the prow on the old designs was well above the waterline and was a continuation of the bow shape on a ship, so the stability was quite different, as befits an ocean going vessel. This boat has more of a shovel shape that I would hate to see turn into a de facto sea anchor if a fair weather captain mistakenly got into some weather with water over the bow. As long as you keep a party on top and the water well below, good design.

What's to stop an newbie passenger from walking off the stern... splash . The table in the center of the cockpit will be an 'elbow in the mouth' probability for your passengers every time you tack. One burner stovetop and minimal food storage... I guess you order a lot of takeout. Where do store your stuff even on just a weekend or do you just come dressed as you are? Never trust lines you can't see. Never trust electric apparatuses that open and close weight-bearing decks. And a prowl on a 30 footer ?... that should throw off the boat balance whenever somebody stands/sits on the area. Etc. Great 'modern' boat.

Stunning and innovative design. I bet we're gonna see more of that soon enough.

Nice calm, well thought out review! The head was not a big loss, but the explanation of the transom, the twin stations, easy accessible forward cockpit access was nicely detailed. Thank you for moving forward and showing the thru-deck lines funneling aft + the option of a genoa. All of this is so much more important than a debate of where the galley is. Every boat sleeps 6 so your review was such a refreshing new perspective compared to all the other full time boat reviewers. Sunbeam was so lucky to have you do this for them!! Sunbeam make exceptional boats. I forever envy one in our marina leg. There are some very sensible design features on this one. Especially the rounded corners down below. There is nothing quite like having a sharp cornered bench top in the ribs to remind you of that. This looks very interesting. I hate dual wheels but love the big duck board.

Well said. I think they are great sailboats, too and very well thought out inside and out. It's a funny thing most of the boats I have sailed have had a single wheel or tiller, which I love, but I am getting used to having twin helms now. It's a bit of an adjustment but very practical. @@SVTONICBoatWives I am spoiled, because our boat has a single wheel with solid rod steering to twin rudders. It feels like power steering compared to the boat we race on which has twin wheels, cable steering and a big spade rudder. The Sunbeam on our marina leg always looks better than the other boats. It just looks like a quality vessel.

This is a gorgeous weekender but definitely not a blue water boat. Love the interior! It's perfect for it's intended design.

It is really set up and ready to go as it is; without a full mast as it is not really a boat meant for sailing, definitelly not offshore. Not a grabrail in the cabin, no real fiddles around the galley top or a gimballed stove, so no cooking - take sandwiches from home and tea in a vacuum flask. It is a party powerboat, no need for a mast or a genoa at all. Let's go to the cockpit; compass is a decoration on the table in the middle of the cockpit, 10 feet from the helm, same with the navigation display; good luck using it helming the boat. Maybe I am biased being a sailor and a boat designer myself, but I do not see much future for this boat as it is. I will not comment on the hull with the aircraft carrier bowsprit. Maybe it is way ahead of its time?

That front bow design should be borrowed by other manufacturers. It looks amazing… 👍

I love this. This looks like a great boat to learn how to sail. Before going big. For me, anyway.love the style and set up

The hull design is reminiscent of the boat that capsized during the 2011 Mackinac race where 2 sailors died. It had flared chines as well. Investigation blamed the accident on the design of the boat and its performance during a storm.

Their boat was a Kiwi 35. They are built with wings going aft and have a reputation for being fast but unstable. The sunbeam is different, using the boat's full beam and putting all the weight in the middle. Thank you for watching;)

Very nicely done novel design. I like the idea of a prow to extend the forestay for more foresail area, but I'd have to see how stiff she is in a breeze. I'm not a fan of square tailed boats in the weather, esp. on a downhill run, but for bright skies and protected water, that one's a looker.

@@SVTONICBoatWives , for myself , I'd like to know whether the boat is hand laid, and how many layers of fiberglas or kevlar or is it shot with a chopper gun and how thick the topsides are. I'd like to know where the decking is sourced, how thick it is and how it is attached to the topsides and cabin sole. How many strands are the standing rigging and how are the fittings crimped or seated. Lastly, at least for now, how many hull penetrations below the waterlline and what are the through-hull fittings made of. Thanks for the opportunity to learn more.

Nice lake boat. Not suitable for Pacific NW. Wish that nice transom folded up (ever been been pooped by a following sea) The reverse prow looks great so long as you never run into something floating in the water. Really like the wide decks. Has the interior privacy of a tent. Better get water proof sheets and a vacume for that aft bunk.

I was thinking the same thing! I don't think I'd take this boat too far offshore.

They also mark toasters and irons as well griddles .

My 1985 Lancer 30' had the same layout. This was the final production year under the original management before Lancer tanked in quality.

@@SVTONICBoatWives It took me 2 years to find that boat and when I did it came with a custom tall rig which solved the one complaint people had of it being slow. Was based off a C & C 30 mold that lancer bought. The Lancer 30 & 36 were the first boats to do this layout. Pre 1984 the original management was in charge and quality control was high. The new management spun down production on the Lancer 30' in 1985 so they could start their downward spiral as a brand. Thus, 1985 was the last good year of Lancer for this boat.

Suggestion: avoid putting your hand in the way of camera. It’s quite annoying for the viewer and unnecessary.

Not just hands, the tuff stickers look so bogan. Speaks so eloquently only to be let down by tats. It's only in the west they are looked upon as fashionable. The rest of the world sees them as dodgy. I'm trying not to judge here, but it's human nature. Excellent narrative.

Very pretty foredeck but I know that the wind will pick up the spray and blow it right over you. Been there etc...

Forgot to mention controls. How's it do going to windward without a traveler and what happens when you get a nice tangle in those halyards and lines under those covers?

Interesting boat, but would like to have seen the head and engine/mechanical area.

Hi there, great video, which trade show is it?

Hmmmm.... how does the emergency steering work? I don't see any room for a tiller. I do like the way this company is trying to incorporate new thinking into a sailboat. I think this would make a great weekender or short vacation boat, but I don't think I'd take it very far offshore on blue water.

Nice concept of getting a much more usable deck on this size of boat. Still not a fan of open transoms though. I'd rather have a tailgate instead of the slide out.

I like the design, but somewhat concerned on the strength of the windows forward. The opening sailing video showed the window low enough and forward enough to take hit! Maybe not square on, but it is worth noting I believe.

Is it priced as a 32 footer or a 40 footer?

The word that keeps popping into my head is that's it's just so... civilized.

So, you limit the lift from the front of the hull, to improve the ride in semi-rough water, but if the wave is slightly larger, you poop the front of the boat and the bow digs in, catches all the water and pitchpole like a cat. Fair weather only boat.

They designed that shape? The umiak, Nuxalk, the haida, and the nootkan, and the yakutat has been making that shape for thousands of years. The war canoes and ocean canoes all had this shape....

Can they put the compass on top of the steering column? This would give a clean table top and closer for helmsman to read. Could have one compass on each steering column for redundancy as per HMS Victory :)

Where do you store all the accessories: life jackets, fenders, boat hooks, extra line and anchors, buckets, fuel bottles, lubricants, tools, boots, foul weather gear, towels, cleaning stuff? Where do put your stuff when you go out for a weekend or do you just come dressed with what you got on? One burner stove... guess you mostly order take out. Trash bin takes up most of precious cabinet space. What's to stop stuff from sliding off the countertop when the boat heels. Open concept cabin void of any ceiling hand rails to hang to... tumble all over the place. Don't trust lines that are hidden. Don't trust electric driven Roland Emet whimsicals that open and close weight-bearing decks. No motor apparantly. What's with the pointy bow... got a BCE dream of sailing with the Greek fleet into Salamis, (install a bronze ram's head for effect). Really like the taupe all over everything. And mercy on all those that inadvertently fall off the stairs what with those fully exposed upturned horns on each tread... skull crackers. SUNBEAM you say. Gotta stop...

That would be nice a child that minds it’s manners and is not lippy, I don’t think they exist anymore. We were trying to explain to our little one the other day what milk of magnesia was. When we were kids it was a miracle medicine;)

So, I'm just about the design of sailboats - aesthetics and features, but no current experience (yet) I love the concept. However, to me the design suggests you have to be "fit and fun" and enjoy sandwiches and hot drinks. The interior is beautiful. But, if I was at the stage with younger kids and imagining family and friends on board, I would want more safety/containment and more storage features for all kinds of junk. If everyone is beyond little kid stage and well trained and it really is just about jumping on from the dock and sailing for a few hours and then returning, then this is just fine, if not more than necessary. Very beautiful, but I think I'd browse around a bit before committing.

SHOW THE BOAT !!!!!!

For a weekender (hoping it is single rudder and available with a shallow Draft) it's gorgeous. Only one thing I would change otherwise is the engine size, and that's likely easily done? Why ? I've found the old rule of thumb that you have an absolute minimum of one horsepower per foot length of the boat to be Rock solid in practice, due to silly difficulties that were really annoying in underoowered boats, for example stuck in bloody overfalls slammed by constantly direction changing Winds, such that I was on the foredeck bouncing around changing hank on foresails for long tiring hours because we just couldn't motor or sailour of them, because the engine was too weak. For me, a 40 hp diesel, and no worries. Otherwise, imaginative thinking with the design. ❤it. Bob. edit added missing letters. my stylus appears to be wearing out.😅

I will agree with you on the engine if it came with forty hp, it would be better, I will ask in April when we take the boat for a test sail. we have a weekend with the SUNBRAM 32 so hopefully, we can put it through its paces and see what it's like living with this sailboat for a time. We will video our time there and do a small factory tour;) The fact that this boat comes with a square top main sail, extra winches and all the other bits that you tick the options list with other boat manufacturers as standard is refreshing.

Any current 24-28 hp Diesel engine will be more than capable of propelling a 30 foot sailboat in any sea state. A three blade prop is a must for better torque in opposing seas. The extra weight and bulk of a larger engine presents a serious challenge in a sub-35 footer.

@@wallacegrommet9343 A 28 hp engine is 7hp under powered for a 35ft boat. the weight difference between a 28hp engine and a 40hp engine is negligible. If your Assumption was correct, I wouldn't have been stuck in severe Overfalls for literally hours until high tide slack water allowed the boat to escape from them, because prior, the engine was underpowered for a 25ft sloop. According to your reasoning, at Peak tide in the Overfalls, it should have been a piece of cake getting out, excuse the 3 bladed prop was going around. Thanks forvthe input from your perspective, but personally I'll stick with what I know Works. eta. the only reason a correct 3 blade orop is better than a correct 2 blade prop, is if there is a Cavitation issue for the correct 2 blade prop for a specific engine and boat combination. See Flexofold for Confirmation, e.g. same horsepower Yanmar Saildrive vs Volvo Saildrive Same boat, flexofold advised 3 blade prop for Yanmar due to Cavitation with 2 blade, Volvo Saildrive fine with 2 blade prop. horsepower is horsepower, for propeller propulsion, what really matters is torque. The old rule of thumb of 1hp per ft length Minimum, pretty much guarantees having enough torque forvthe boat. The .overfalls problem is not the only problem I have had while Afloat due to the lack of power. I live in an area of the World that has among the biggest Tidal ranges in the World, and where there are islands etc, with extremely powerful Currents between them Plus huge amounts of water come in and leave through places like Milford Haven, and there is no such thing as too much power in reserve, plus most ofvthe time, you aren't even close to over stressing a bigger engine, so with proper maintenance, they are extremely hard to break. @@wallacegrommet9343 Something to really think about that seriously proves you Wrong, is the New Beneteau Oceanis 60ft Sailboat. Guess the size of the engine they have put in it ? To save you the trouble of looking it up, it is a 170 horsepower Yanmar diesel inboard. Now simple Maths, that is close to Three horsepower per foot of boat length isn't it, which kind of confirms just how Conservative the old rule of thumb absolute minimum of one horsepower per foot length of the boat really is, and should see that 1.5 to 2 hp per foot length is the practical option to go for for smaller boats that have much less water drag? 🤔

@@brownnoise357 I once had a supertanker in a power slide, that required full opposite rudder to hold course, for miles off the coast of France , simply because of the tides. Turns out there was a reason why no ships used what appeared to be a good time saving shortcut, but our North Sea pilot , aboard for local knowledge, thought it might be a good idea. Only time I have ever seen whirlpools big enough to conceivably swallow an antique coastal merchant vessel as they went by. I consider safety planing the first lesson any sailor must learn. Even if you are a sailor who can't tie your own shoes, learning the hard way is better done on land.

I like a modern clean space, but worry about so many appliances and electronics to maintain. IT IS for weekenders. I doubt I could sail blue water or live aboard up a river. I expect the price to be beynd me. The video needs the URL for Sunbeam Yachts in the info paragraph.

I'd be perfect if it had a lifting centerboard and capable of being "dried out"!

So much to go wrong or breakdown on this boat, and expensive enought to buy and maintain that it keeps the sea safe from those proles and petite bougoisie skum...

That throttle is so low, maybe you're supposed to operate it with a foot? Also bow thruster to be operated through the wheel? Chart plotter 6 feet away from helm wheel? Who designed this?

Given the sailboat wingnuts with flared chines aft was capsized by taking a beam swell, capsizing and killing two sailors. In my opinion a similar situation could easily capsize this Sunbeam design as well even though the flared chines are forward of midship. In my opinion, she’s not a safe boat. I’d stay away from the design.

I would have to disagree, as the wings on the Kiwi 35 were huge and badly designed. All it took was a large wind and a bad wave. With wings that were 2-3 meters long and were very pronounced protruding out of the hull, to give an extra 3-4ft was bound to end in disaster one day. I believe Sunbeam have done their homework, and with today's safety standards and advanced design test models, you have a safe strong sailboat?

I like modern boats, but the interior is a deal-breaker for me. It's not all that attractive and looks rather downscale/cheap. A single burner stove top is a bad idea (even my old Catalina 27 had two) and there's no privacy for anyone...not a good boat for two couples. I do see this would work for some folks, but below is so drab and small for a 32 footer.

For a weekend i prefer something smaller and for a cruise it's see uncomfortable
