yes, he was convincingly beaten in the end. But i have just as much respect for cochrane as an athlete as i do sun. sun may be a legend but cochrane is a lot smaller in size, and you can see that during this race he did all of the work, he was the one forcing the pace and sun took the easy option of following him and sprinting away at the end. its been difficult for cochrane, always seems to finish number 2, whether thats behind hackett, mellouli or sun yang

The thing is that if Ryan Cochrane really had any realistic shot of winning this race, he would have needed to push the pace much harder. Sun Yang wins the 1500 by sitting back and then sprinting away at the end. Cochrane needed to make Sun Yang work to keep up the pace to the point that it made Sun uncomfortable, only at that point would Cochrane have had a chance. nemrut that's the galloping stroke which you can see most swimmers use for shorter distances. Like Phelps. Instead of holding out the lead arm out for as long as possible and having the stroking hand catch up as much as possible to the lead arm before initiating the next pull or catching up and doing this for both arms or sides, the swimmer only catches up on one side and does not extend the lead arm when on the other side and initiates the pull immediately. This is to speed things up.
