    1. Excellent arm pulls. Early vertical forearm. Using lats to pull while forearm kept vertical. Finishing the push with adequate hip rotation to exert more strength. 2. Very rhythmic kicks. Most of the time, 3 kicks in the left arm stroke and 1 in the right, which ensured sufficient oxygen and energy throughout the 1500m course. 3. Wonderful balance. In each stroke, he used his core to lean weight point forward to keep a good streamline, and his leading arm was always completely straight forward with shoulder fully extended. 4. He was not at all distracted by other swimmers. Full of confidence and well trained. He was only listening to his own heartbeat and enjoyed the gushing of adrenaline.

Look at the difference with the swimmer on his right. Sun Yang swims with his entire body. Arms and legs work together through the core.

Hi chilly21 ! For me the difference is striking in Sun Yang's stroke. And for me as well, no olympic swimmer swims in the same way. Yes I'm an intermediate swimmer and my comment too. I didn't want to hurt you. have a nice day chilly21

Sun Yang has tremendous hip torque that his stroke is lengthy and that he can better set his flexible high elbow catch to pull the water early (that’s why he takes less than 30 strokes per 50 with that much speed incredible)

His shoulder flexibility is incredible. Look closely at his his pulling arm. Very early in his stroke he is getting maximum "grip" on the water. His forearm / hand "paddle" reaches a position where it is fully perpendicular to his forward movement through the water VERY early in the stroke. How early? His elbow has _only just_ reached the TOP of his head, but his forearm/hand are already in the perfect position. To see this, start at 1m52s (kzread.info/dash/bejne/X52X06Oih7LSgMo.html) then quickly start/stop the footage. Try to click through it frame by frame. Stop at about 1m55s where it is unmissable.

Bruno cesar Queiroz To show how powerful Yang was at the 2012 Olympics in this event. His winning time here was almost 19 seconds slower than in 2012. I wish him the best and I hope he improve at least 12 seconds better than this Asian meet.

I think he opens his palm to clear the air bubbles so it generates more propulsion in stroke phase. It looks like not only him but his opponents also uses this technique.

+Valentino Barilli I don't know... Despite the major setbacks Sun has had lately in his career, I believe he will be able to pull through for the gold in Rio. Paltrinieri may be wicked at holding pace, but his turn over rate is lacking, and Sun is known for his last 50 to be well over a second faster than even his first. I am not expecting a 14:31.08 like back in London, 2012, but I predict something around 14:35.64. He will take the gold, Paltrinieri will be a close second at around 14:37.12 and Jaeger will finish in third with a best time of 14:40.87.

Sum Nida !

He's very tall but has slim body shape with long wingspans which are extremely adapted to distance swimming That's why he was born for distance swimming but not for sprinting. You could see sprinting guys (50-100 free) who are also very tall (1.93m-2.02m) but having much more muscles .

Wave drag reduces the taller the swimmer is. Add in large hands & feet, longer levers of the arms & legs, and bigger muscles, tall swimmers are at a big advantage. Virtually all competitive swimmers are taller than the average population.
