Sump Pump Replacement
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
One morning my sump pump decided to fail. The previous week we had rain nearly every day, so I know it was working overtime. Luckily I caught it before the sump had filled up all the way again. All I heard was a constant humming sound but water was not being pumped away. This video documents me replacing the failed unit with a new cast iron unit roughly equivalent to what I pulled out.

You made that look so easy, my sum pump doesn't seem to be working at this time. We might have to change ours aswell. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comment and good luck with yours! I would like to add a follow-up comment. I did end up working on that pump just a month or two ago when it rained heavily. One of the clamps I used ended up rusting and breaking and popping off! It was below the check valve and spraying water everywhere! I guess in the wet environment it speeds it up the oxidization. I was lucky and had a spare clamp laying around and didn't have to make a special trip to the store. I'm not sure if stainless worm drive clamps are available, but they may stand up longer than what I used. Otherwise, if you can avoid the rubber fittings and glue up the PVC joints the whole way, maybe rust wouldn't ever be an issue. For grins I found a water leak detector/alarm for $19 and ordered it. I set that up so the probe lies right in the ridge of the top of the sump pit. I tested it and the alarm is super loud, so I don't have a concern that I won't hear it. It just uses little AAA batteries though, so I'll have to remember to change them out every year.
Great job explaining!👍
anti-seize compound help to get that PVC apart later (near the pump base) but also would help those screws from rusting out and they will move freely too. Thanks for the video.

Your comment is very wise. One of the clamps did rust and break just a few weeks back and the pump was strong enough to shoot the fitting off and spray water up like crazy. Luckily I had a spare one laying around. I added a water alarm/sensor, but hopefully the new clamp doesn't go bad as quickly.
By the looks of your old sump pump, I am going to say that you got every last bit out of it. It looks like it was 30+ years old!
I'm about to change my sump pump tomorrow.. And the ejection thing. Whatever it's called. Pray for me.. Never done this before lol Thanks for this video!!

Did it go well?! I hope you were able to get through it ok!
Strait and to the point good job man
Would be a good idea to put in a weep hole to prevent an air lock.
I just did mine Last night... Pouring down rain... Water in the basement and mine lasted 2 years exactly. The only difference is that my check valve is Not submerged in the pit it's above the pit not covered in water. Good job on the video...

Wow. only 2 years?! I better keep an eye on mine. We've had a really wet late winter / early spring here and I know the one I put in has been working overtime....

Yes mine runs a lot especially when we get a lot of wet weather, weather rain or snow and with all the rain we received last night it disperses the water twice every minute.

What model did you install? Two years is pathetic!
Well, done! Thank you.
Great vid and explanations.

Great video, well put together! One comment is that to stay away from Everbuilt that Home Depot sells, the reason being you never know what you get! Also, mechanical float could better, no?
Great Video...thank you Which model of Sump pumps u used ?

Good question. I have quite a long run, half vertical and then across my garage before it empties outside of the house. When I went to home depot, they determined the model/horsepower required mainly for the vertical lift distance that it needed to pump up to..
You did not drill a 1/8" air lock hole before check valve. This may create air lock
Awesome video and great suggestions. I had a question for you. How do you apply for the warranty on that pump. I have the same one and Id like to see if I'm covered for a possible replacement. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Good question. I honestly just figured I could return the pump to the big box store in the even it failed, but you might be right that it may be needed to be handled through manufacturer. I probably should have looked more closely at that!
I just heard you say "You don't know what is wrong with the old pump". Well, by the looks of it, I would say it died after being at the bottom of the ocean for 50 years. Sheesh, that thing just looks awful!

What's that silver looking thing (not the ring handle) on the top of your new pump? Is that a valve or something? Thanks. Great video.

Good question! I don't remember reading anything in the user manual for this. I'd have to guess it was something to do with maintenance of the motor portion. Maybe someone else has an idea.

Hey, good job! What about the vent hole? Did I miss it?
@stoppedsnoring

Good question. In this case, the pump is pushing the water all the way out of the house (actually it exits into a downspout on the side of the house), so no vent is required. I would think if it dropped into a regular sewer stack then the regular vent on the roof allows the flow. There shouldn't be a vent in the systems before that though because the water is pumped and held by the check valve.

Thank you for the video! According to a bunch of videos, and Zoeller, a 3/16 downward vent hole should be added below the check valve to prevent airlock. Even built-in holes in some pumps can get clogged by mud and corrosion. Also, with the outlet so close to the pit, a GFCI may be a good idea.
why not replace the check valve while you were at it? They wear out surprising frequently.

Hmm, do they make more complicated check valves with springs, mechanisms and things? I looked inside this one and noticed this was a simple flap that would fall back into place and seal up if the water tried to come back down the pipe, so it didn't appear to have much of a way to wear out.

They definitely do make ones with springs. But more common is the simple flap. If you look at the flap it is rubber and plastic on a little hinge. It is constantly drenched in water and then flaps open and shut thousands of times. After time rubber breaks down and then the flap will break off.
I am wondering if I need to change my sump pump too [8 yrs now]! Just a few days ago I noticed that the pump is not pumping the water out of the barrel anymore [although I see the pump run and even see that the water get warm]!!! Any idea what might be going on? Thank you for your help.

Yeah, I bet your pump failed basically the same way mine did. Mine just hummed (so I don't remember whether the motor was spinning and just broke or if the motor was locked up) and wasn't pumping either.

@@stoppedsnoring Turns out that there was freezing/blockage on the exit pipe [caused by sub-zero temperatures for a week]. Got cleared today when the weather warmed up a bit and it is back to normal operation.

Glad to hear it didn't require a replacement! They are expensive. After the initial pumping up height, mine runs down hill all the way so I don't think it has a chance to pool up and freeze anywhere.

Hey, good idea! I think my sump serves dual purposes (for a/c condensation and to help with moisture in the basement due to porous soil and heavy rains).
