Fragrance is such a funny thing. The first few blooms of my newly planted Bliss from Kordes were so disappointing as far as the fragrance. I couldn't detect any! But one cool morning, a few weeks ago, I took a sniff and was blown away by a lovely lemony verbena smell! I cut the rose and place it in a small vase. My entire living room was quickly smelling of lemons! Lasted for days. Very pleased! Thanks for introducing me to the Kordes roses. I have added 3 ( Bliss, Titan, and Plum Perfect) to my small garden. Thanks, Jay Jay!

I can’t wait to smell my summer romance from Kordes. I bought it as bare root last January and it got buds now. It supposed to smell fresh rose and apple at first then the heart note is combination of Myrrhe, anis and spice and if you have it a room for a long time , you can smell blood (blütig in German). I heard the best time to smell the rose is when the rose is half open. Congratulations on your 500 subscribers!🌹

Thanks Gemma yes I couldn’t wait any longer. I wasn’t sure if the rain would destroy the flowers and because Gertrude was still fragrant under the same conditions I went for it. Today it was sunny and dry and the fragrance from summer romance was better but I’d still say average intensity for me which is more than light scent. However spicy Parfuma is in bud the flowers haven’t opened yet, but I think something is brewing inside!:)

You live in such a picturesque location. As far as fragrance I don't get all the notes and undertone things. I just know what smells nice. I have noticed with some of my roses that I get more fragrance first thing in the morning and it dwindles as the day goes on. She is certainly a very pretty one though. Oh and congrats on 504 now subscribers. I do believe it is down to the fact that you are so relatable and you talk to us not at us. Keep it up and you'll soon reach 1000 👏

Thank you for not describing the fragrances in the rather silly terms that wine connoiseurs use, b/c frankly, they are amusing in their pretentiousness! I enjoy your videos for their honesty & simplicity, & I am amazed that you answer questions & reply to people like me (I'm the one lamenting the discontinued Brother Cadfael rose) even tho you now have over 2000 subscribers. You may not be a professional rose grower with sponsorship from one rose breeder or another, but you are a very successful rose grower, & I aspire to have roses half as awesome as yours. Love hearing about your mistakes, too, we all make 'em (I once planted 200 daffodil bulbs & not 1 came up, thus was born the legend of The Black Thumb!). I'd love more advice on roses in pots, as yours seem to do so well--I didn't see a video on that. And imagine my surprise when you went into that bedroom, & there was my dog Bailey stretched out on the bed! She is an elderly, black retired racing (& a winner, if I may brag!) greyhound, very quirky, even for a grey---when I got her, she was territorial & bit any stranger who came to the house, doesn't play with toys or other dogs except before meals, when she apparently feels she must demonstrate her hunting prowess. The only thing she's ever chased is apples (loves sweets), she adores cats & was so very disappointed to find that my cat considered dogs a lower form of life, spends most of her time lying on her back, waving paws in the air in hope of a belly rub. I'd love another greyhound but I live alone & cannot manage a big dog in case of emergency! How about a video featuring Seanie, if you haven't already?

Hi vintage lady and what a lovely read. Yes rose fragrance I tend to stay away from as much as I can. It really can be a minefield with everything taken into account. Good days/bad days I even hear what we’ve eaten can have influence so i tend to steer clear as much as I dare. Your a greyhound owner! Made me smile straight away. We’ve had greyhounds going back 20 plus years. Always ex racers looking for homes and always the difficult ones that for one reason or another couldn’t be rehomed. We’ve had fantastic successes in turning them around into amazing pets but this latest one Seanie is a challenge. He is reactive to other dogs and sadly I don’t think we will ever coax him out of it completely, but that said he is much better now than he was. And the most amazing member of the family in every other sense. Great with people that aren’t carrying sticks (yes we don’t know his history sadly.) and around the house he’s always been immaculate. Well give Bailey a kiss from us :) roses in pots I tend to have success with yes but this year my luck ran out as you may have seen in my latest video but for me it’s all a learning process and they are looking fine now. I will certainly introduce Seanie to you again in the next video. :) take care

@@Jay_Jay Give Seanie a good belly rub from me, so sorry about his history. My dog screamed (the famous greyhound scream of death!) when I got a fold-up walking stick (cattle prod PTSD, I think)& she fell apart one time when I tried to tie a wide black ribbon around her tummy to keep her coat on (belt, maybe?). Took her 2 years to accept strangers & know that no one here would hurt her ever. She's old now w/ bad respiratory problems, so I suspect we don't have much more time, but I've promised her 100 bellyrubs every day! And yes, please, more Seanie! Does he like roses too? Or maybe he prefers doggie snacks!

Hi Jay Jay - Based on your recommendation, I just purchased the rose 'Summer Romance'. I found the flower to be lovely and it appears the fragrance is just as splendid. @@Jay_Jay One of the reasons that I watch your channel diligently is because you grow so many roses in pots ----- and since I grow all of my roses in pots, your channel is just exciting to watch! Your videos are thorough and introduce each rose you grow, which is fantastic. I so appreciate what you do and enjoy your videos tremendously. (PB).

Nice to meet the doggo & have a glimpse inside the channel HQ. Idk if I could handle making KZread videos, but my roses need a couple more years to get their bearings & come into their own still. (There have been some casualties, but every mistake is a lesson to be learned. Hopefully I’m doing that bit right, at least.) I have a rather meagre Instagram where I sometimes post snapshots of blooms as they make their way into the house as cuttings.

Hi Joe. Yes having a KZread channel can have its ups and downs. My roses are all young and I’m pretty sure some would prefer I wasn’t making videos at all. But I have thick skin and a little shameless perhaps. But I do always try and explain I’m no expert my roses are young etc and I think ordinary viewers get that. I kinda find uploading enjoyable if I’m honest, nothing more than that. Maybe you should think about it. What’s your Instagram I’ll look you up?

Hi Deborah. It’s a lovely rose and it has (and still is) defying all the odds. I will talk about it more in my next video. But a lovely rose and great for the bees.

Love your video! How would you compare Gertrude to Summer Romance in term of resistance to black spot . On my side , I never got any black spot on my summer romance while I get a lot of black spot on my Gertrude mainly at the end of the summer .. And they are at the same spot ; back to back... Did you notice that also ? Thanks in advice .

Hi there LL. sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Gertrude for the previous 3 years was prone to blackspot. I’d say it was pretty unhealthy. But this past summer I had hardly any black spot on Gertrude! perhaps that was due to a severe lack of rain we had I don’t know. But the fragrance of Gertrude alone I don’t worry about her blackspot. Summer romance I did have a little blackspot in its first year of ownership but nothing too serious. Some say they don’t get blackspot on summer romance but I guess the conditions are different all over the world. But I’d say summer romance was the healthier. But Gertrude the fragrance, I wouldn’t dismiss it. Thanks

Hi Jay just want to tell you I received my Summer Romance today from English Roses. Very impressed. It even has 2 flower buds. Very healthy looking. The way they packed it was amazing. I’ve always bought bare root before. As it is in a pot I will leave it outside in its pot until Spring. By then it will have filled the pot with roots. Thank you for telling me where to purchase it. 👍

I must say, I'm only knew to roses. I've only planted my first nine 2 weeks ago in Brisbane Queensland Australia and I do love making rose tea and face spritz etc.. from dried petals I will now do from my own roses. I have researched alot the past month on roses in every aspect, as is in my nature to do. I have only bought the most intense fragrance roses therefore. Now my research has bought me this week to read that EACH ROSE has its particular care in order to bring out that fragrance. Each individual rose they say. So you've got some research to do, as myself!! Do you use black well composted cow Manure into soil mix a little bit off and fish and their bones? I'm yet to buy the fish plant it in bottom, a small fish. My rose horticulturist friend does this.

Come come what roses have you purchased I’d love to know :) I have used black cow manure in the past but this year I’ve gone organic plant based mulch which seems to be doing very well. I did try fish blood and bone one year on some of my roses. It seemed to do ok. But please tell us the results of your research i.e what roses have you gone for and what is best for them individually? It’s the first I’ve heard of that. :)

@Jay_Jay I couldn't remember their names. As I'm completely new to gardening, let alone rose caring, I'm doing it with full force on my angels 🪽! So 7 days ago I finished planting 9 bare root roses I ordered in honour of my father and mother and their garden they built together over 30 years. My mum died of Parkinson's Disease after 14 yrs, last year. I especially bought in honour of my father 3 Kordes Dark Desire /Gratin Diana for he built each of the 15 gardens. He passed 10 yrs ago. I bought 3x non perfume rose 90cm standard trees for my mum. Tangles. Its lilac. It was 5 star health and all the other roses had sold. I bought 3x Kordes dwarf fairy red . All are budding leaves now. 2 weeks from start of the project. Than I thought as I was planting and configurations of design for where. This really held me back for over a week when I got the bare roots on July 13th. Both my parents died 14th July 9 years apart. So it was Gods providence. I thought I'd buy a few roses for myself. So I just looked for the pale pinks and with intense perfume and high health rating. Sister( Soeur ) Emmanuelle x2, 60cm standard & bush. Heaven Scent x1. Love Story x1. Perfume De Paris x2 60cm standard & bush. ...plum hybrid tea rose . Kordes perfuma another Dark Desire Gratin Diana x1. Fruity Perfuma x1. Delightful Perfuma x1. Madame Anisette x1. All bushes. David Austin: Golden Celebration x1. Desdemona x1. Munstead Woods x1. Wollerton Old Hall I bought last sat as a small bush. Its only 2 or 3 stars in health. I have coming 17 Bare root roses now. I can't recall the other names. Il write them as I look at my emails from 3 different growers in state of Victoria Australia where it's cold. They are all coming mid August. Im getting prepared. Now I'm a member for 2 days on Facebook group "Old roses and David Austin " for now being the person who makes concoctions with organic rose petals and flowers for 20years . I will now have my own highly perfumed roses to make. Its extremely exciting. 6mm Rose beads I will compound in mortar n pestle too. So they must be highly fragrant. Now on this old roses group it's brought me to go much deeper into fragrance research. Basically I've learnt from my own research these last 5 days that hybrids / florabunda that yield many blooms do not always yield the fragrance as the old roses bloomed once per year and all the fragrant molecular would grow intensely over the 10 months to fragrance that was not easily lost. So now I'm looking to research the Persian roses Basically to buy next year for fragrance. That are actually harvested for perfume as well as the Bulgarian roses. Rose Otto. Rose centifolia all in old world non hybrids. I think the hybrid perpetual this group says is okay. Im looking to buy next year roses called " Rugosa " for growing rose hips to pick and dry that are nature's multi vitamin drink. Ive found a few yest and today. Also the "moseroses" interest me to use the mose on the buds that grow. I have found 2 of these. But I must research what it's good for! It's all very old rose world recipes that did work. Roses are very antibiotic , antistress, anti- inflammatory. Anti -influenza. I truly experience this myself. Start with drying your petals. Picked at that perfect time the rose is still slightly closed. Your skin will glow in 2 days! I've only just begun. Now I will ultimately be potting these 17 roses this month for performance measurement , do I can alter soils etc.. and research each individual rose and what that rose requires to be as fragrance as it should be. To my best. As in pots you can move them to safer climate In the yard or more sun etc.. If I must build on 2 thinish steel poles with plastic over head to go into ground on each side of the rose bush with much rain comes, so my roses perfume is not injured I will do that!! As when you harvest for fragrance the roses, they must be dry and taken by mid morning. Around 9am or by high fragrance time on that rose. Otherwise they are ruined for harvesting the oils for drying the petals. If you google making rose recipes you'll 📚 read.

I couldn’t help but think whilst reading your comment I would stumble across your willingness to do a video of it. It sounds truly fantastic, I do hope you do a video of your garden and show us what you do. Sorry to hear about your parents. My father in law had Parkinson’s for maybe 7 years in total and that was horrific. My wife and her mum were the ones who done much of the sorting out and running around. Shortly after he died my mum in law developed dementia and that is where we are today. Again my wife is the main carer and works absolute miracles. But the above have placed so much stress, demands, anxiety and worry on both of us. Awful awful diseases. Some of your roses I know or have heard of and I hope you will be very happy with them I’m sure you will. But what’s most interesting is many of your roses I do not know and I’m sure many others won’t either. I honestly believe you could have a cracking little channel. Truth be told my roses and KZread channel are the ONE escape I have from what goes on. Would LOVE to see your garden develop.

@Jay_Jay a rose society says that Humic acid or Fulvic acid is very important for roses. I purchased Fulvic Acid after researching both. I purchased also Alfalfa meal, which I will make a water infusion of to pour deep down into roots, not from top. Putting holes down all round with a narrow stick. The Plant doctor told me what else would help the roses oils to make better fragrance is: Quantum H. I didn't ask him what would help the fragrance. So Gods Providence here at work!

@@CatholicSaintslayIncorrupt hi, I will try alfalfa meal next year I think a few people now have suggested this. Also the narrow stick thing you mention I have considered this before but for different circumstance they call it deep root watering I believe. In Australia I’ve seen them use 2” plastic pipes in the ground and then water into the pipe direct. That way the water doesn’t simply evaporate in the heat but gets to the roots where it’s needed. As it stands I don’t water my roses regularly but I do water them very well when I do water them and I hear this is beneficial. So this deep root watering if it works in Australian drought I’m sure it would work in British drought.

What are your most strongly rose or citrus scented roses.

Hi Sarah. Rose fragrance can be such a minefield. But for me I get lemon from Arthur bell. That’s the strongest citrus I get. Gertrude Jekyll and fragrant cloud are my strongest Rose scent. But please check out Darren hardwoods channel. He has many roses and is a bit of a fragrance connoisseur. But for me it can be different from day to day with regards to strength, Each specific Rose can have off days and on days. But the roses I mention above I will ALWAYS get fragrance.

I bought it last April, but the color is not medium pink. It is light pink. I don't know how to make my flowers medium pink?

That’s odd are you sure it’s not a different rose mislabelled? Sometimes this happens and you end up with the wrong rose to the one you thought you purchased. I wouldn’t say summer romance is a light pink myself ?
