I have the feeling that "magical realism" is a term that gets thrown around a lot, but the concept was developed and defined by Latin American authors like Garcia Marquez. I recommend going back to those classics. I personally prefer 100 Years of Solitude to Love in the Time of Cholera, if you wanna read one of the most popular ones but you're not much into romance, you probably like it too. It is also an attempt to write a "total novel", so that the world becomes the novel and the novel includes the world. (Actually, my favorite "total novel" attempt is The Death of Artemio Cruz by Fuentes; it starts out slow but man... a masterpiece). If you want to start with something shorter , you can try Of Love and Other Demons (i should've probably checked if that's the correct translation but it'll be similar if not exact). My personal favorite is Pedro Paramo by Rulfo, which I wouldn't quite consider magical realism (it's too fantastical for that), but it was a big influence on Garcia Marquez. I may recommend it more for the fall, though, bc it is dark. It's super short, and kind of confusing, not exactly a light read, but it is amazing, especially considering when it was written. The first time I read it, I literally flipped to page 1 and started over. Btw sorry for lack of accent marks in this comment :/ and also for recommending super literary works that you may not wanna read at the beach haha

We have this thing called "One Book, One Community" where I live, and every year we read a book & go to events that relate to the book. Last year was "All the Light We Cannot See," and even though I wasn't that into the subject matter, Doer's writing is absolutely exquisite!

I've been reading a lot of historical fiction this summer. I loved "Threads and Flames" by Esther M. Friesner. It's about a Polish Jewish seamstress who immigrates to America to find her older sister. She's around during a historical fire at a sweat shop in New York. I'd one of my favorite books I've read this year. You might also try "Moloka'i" by Alan Brennert. It's about a young Hawaiian girl who comes down with leprosy and how she lives with it on an island for people suffering with the same disease are banished to. It's a bit slow at times but the writing is beautiful, and covers a lot of topics.

I really enjoy reading contemporaries in the summer too, one of my favourites is 'the summer I turned pretty' by Jenny Han. Although it's a little cliche, and the first book is way better than the rest of the trilogy, it always gives me that nostalgia for memories of the summer.

I loved big little lies and I plan to read more of her books this year. I also really liked the series bases on it. I also really loved to all the boys I loved before. It's such a cute story. In the same genre, I also read Since you've been gone but didn't like it at all. I thought there was not much to the story but the little mistery in there kept me intrigued, although the outcome wasn't really good. I will not say much. I hope you enjoy it though. Agatha Christie was my favorite author while growing up. And then there were none is amazing! Im always in the mood for contemporaries because where I live is summer 24/7. Hope you have a great summer reading! ;)

You might be interested in reading Emily Henry. So far she has written, both of which are YA magical realism: -The Love that Split the World, which I haven't read -A Million Junes, which I have read. This is a book about grief, but involves a lot of magical elements and moving between reality and memory. Although there is some insta-love, this book dealt mostly with grief and memories. It was a fast read! Sarah Addison Allen is another author who writes magical realism, in a chick-lit way. Since it's summer, you might be into these!

Big Little Lies is SO GOOD. Watch the show even if you didn't read the book. It's awesome. Madeline was my favorite character too. The Husband's Secret is less good but still enjoyable. For a girl-on-girl book I'd recommend Her Name in the Sky by Kelly Quindlen. It's a beautiful love story, but it has a heavy religious theme so if you mind that you probably won't enjoy it. We Were Liars is a really good and fast summer read. I read it last summer in one sitting. I've had the Nightingale forever and haven't read it yet. I've got it when I got All the Light We Cannot See which I struggled to get through, so it kinda tainted my view of the Nightingale. I hope I'll read it this summer though. Great video Emily :)

For magical realism I just go with my favorite author: Haruki Murakami. He write mainly magical realism and his books are just so beautifuly written and the topics are normally so interesting that I just reach for them. Also you have Gabriel Garcia Marquéz I am only starting his works this summer and they have a very summerish feeling to them. Although the stories are very deep they are told in such a light way that you just can't put it down!!!!

A good contemporary summer read would be When Dimple Met Rishi... Even though you are not much into the romance genre, but you should still read it.. because it's so much more than just a romance.. it has a strong character development element which I really enjoyed.. I really think you will enjoy it Emily.😊

You should definitely read some of A.S. King's books! Most of them are considered magical realism as far as I know, and they're fairly quick reads but they're all so unique, thought-provoking, and philosophical. I've read three of her books: Everybody Sees the Ants, Glory O'Brien's History of the Future, and Please Ignore Vera Dietz. Really loved HotF and PIVD (though Please Ignore Vera Dietz really only has a sprinkle of magical realism). Everybody Sees the Ants wasn't as big a hit for me, but I think you would enjoy it!

Hello from Montreal! ;) The Nightingale and All the Light are AMAZING historical fiction books! Seriously two books that stay with you looooong after you've finished reading them. I would recommend starting with All the Light, as it's less intense emotionally and the writing is ridiculously beautiful (one of my all-time favs). Both books will make you cry so have a box of Kleenex nearby. Amuse-toi ma chère!

thats so true. like there are so many books where a boy is in love with a boy compared to where a girl is in love with a girl that are popular. but i do have a recommendation which is of fire and stars. personally i wouldnt tell you more than that there is sapphic love in it and that it has a court setting bc i was kinda spoiled the plot but i still really enjoyed it. i definitely think that the writing style could have been a bit better, although it certainly had potential, and also i think the ending was kinda weak. that being said i love the book so much, and i think that a lot of the characters, especially the main characters are rlly well written. and one of the main characters who is a girl is written in a way that you dont often see women written so that was rlly cool :)

Emily I hope you enjoy My Husband's Secret, I really enjoyed the mystery of it. Also if you enjoy it you should check out another book by Liane Moriarty called What Alice Forgot. It has a little romance in it but nothing cheesy I think since it is an adult book, it also kind of has the slight kind of mystery/trying to figure out what's going on feel as The Husband's Secret does. It was my first I read from her and Big Little Lies which is on my current TBR is gonna be the third book from her that I read!

I am going to try and read All the Light we Cannot See this month. I am currently reading made you up and then after that I think I'll read that. I read The Nightingale last year and it was my favorite book of the year but I love historical fiction that takes place in world war 2. I am currently hoping I can find a physical copy of it at a used book sale or something. Since I have read it I am hesitant to pay full price. Also, a book I suggest is Eliza and Her Monsters. That book was really good. I loved the characters and the relationships. It might be something that you'd end up liking as well.

for magical realism you might enjoy the books of Keith Donohue. He has a dark comedy titeled: Centuries of June (planning to read it this month) an Orpheus and Euredice retelling: The motion of puppets (planning to finish it this month) And his books Angels of Destruction and The Stolen child fit very well in the summer imo. simply because the themes are more to do with love for family and who you really are. At points they are almost like dreamy fantasy, that totally sucks you away. Or the Witches of East End series by Melissa de la Cruz. These border on low fantasy and are a retelling of the Eddas (Norwegian myths). Personally I tend to lean toward lighter reads in the summer. So easy to read fantasy (or rereads in that genre), some contemporaries that aren't romance based and sometimes a mystery/thriller. If I am in the mood I will pick up classics.

I have read a lot of those books . Just finished And Then There Were None and want to watch the old black and white movie. The nightingale and All The Light We Cannot See were good but a similar book....The Light Between Oceans was amazing . And the movie was even better than the book...which doesn't happen very often.

There's this great non fiction book called "Dear John, I love Jane." And it is about women who were with men and realized that, that's not what they wanted. There is also "You Know Me Well" (it's about friendship, but the main characters are a gay guy and a gay girl) there is love and it's set during pride month!

If you want to dive into Magical Realism, please do read Gabriel García Márquez, who is considered by many the father of the genre (One Hundred Years of Solitude, Chronicles of a Death Foretold). I would also like to recommend Latin American literature in general, just because it is something very different from what you already read, and I think you might like it. I have a soft spot for female writers like Isabel Allende (The House of Spirits), Gioconda Belli (The Scroll of Seduction) and Laura Esquivel (Like Water for Chocolate).

I would recommend reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Reid Jenkins. It's a historical fiction set against the backdrop of Old Hollywood and is told from the perspective of an Old Hollywood actress. Her story is interwoven with ageism, sexism, racism, homophobia, LGBT and a lot of other things that are still common. Y'all should check it out.
