Summer league, a switch to zone, and is John Wall an option for Boston Celtics?

Спорт

The Boston Celtics have only played two games, but some trends are starting to show up in guys like Jordan Walsh and JD Davison. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal discusses that, why the zone defense they've been playing around with could be a sign that Joe Mazzulla will do something very smart with his defense, and whether John Wall is an option for the Celtics.

On the potential switch to zone defence. I actually came to that conclusion when Grant was traded. I didn’t exactly call that exact scheme but I had a feeling the Celtics wanted to promote more team defence. Generally we relied so heavily on Smart and Williams to carry the defence and defend the opposing teams best player. I’ve said it before in a previous podcast. I felt the switching defence slowed us down a bit in transition and also for particular matchups and against particular teams we gave up a lot of offensive boards as the big man switched to the ball handler and the bigger roll man had a clear lane. It’s generally not a problem until 3 minutes left in a must win game and the opposing team exploits the switch; either gets fouled or gets an easy offensive board. The move to zone is really welcome news, I want EVERYONE to play defence - 1 through 5. Brad wanted a point offence I want the same effort and team mentality on the other end.

Wall has played just 70+ games in the last 4 years. If he’ll take a seat on the bench perhaps I’d gamble on him, but he has to come cheap. Brogdon gets hurt at least once a year too but if his insurance policy is just as injury prone it makes no sense. I just want to know where the mental toughness is going to come from. Is losing so badly last year in that G7 going to finally help these dudes turn the corner? I love the Porzingis signing/trade, but if nothing changes then nothing changes. Derrick white may shoot less and efficiency may go down but he has a mean float game, so if he is required to set up plays mord then he will be fine scoring wise. Plus in the times White set up the plays, as long as the ball moves around he will still get his catch and shoot oppurtunities in similar fashion. The thing i think that will drop will be his defense he hes required to do a lot more on offence. Itll take more energy out of him but this is all speculation

white actually has good efficiencies. He ranks in the 81st percentile in offensive efficiency. Imo he should be getting more shots but hes deferring too much to the Js, smart and brogdon. White's defense was fine in SA (though not all-def levels) when he was asked by Pop to be lead guard. He should be fine and get better.

Yes to changing up the D! Box and 1, 2/1/2, or just man-to-man ya gotta keep options open and certain lineups will work better with different schemes. We were as reliant on the switching as we were on 3's last year. When these things worked, sure it was great but they didn't work more often than they did and other teams exploited them almost at will by the time the playoffs rolled around. 5-out is easy for teams to defend when they know they can leave a guy open (Marcus or whoever else isn't shooting well that game) and guard the rest of us 5 on 4. And, on D, switching is great until teams realized they could just shuffle the deck until they got the cut/matchup they wanted and, in the meantime, one of us would be lost in space for easy open passes, cuts, dunks, free throws, etc.. Maddening and we actually got worse at both in the playoffs. Schemes were shooting ourselves in the feet. So, here's to becoming less predictable and less analytics-based, please, with this new season and new squad! #paytonneedsminutes

I think it's hard to say they aren't looking to move Brogdon... cuz they tried to move Brogdon lol. CBA is forcing teams to make strict business related decisions and it's hard to justify a backup making 21 mil who will likely miss a good chunk of time every season. As a player its hard not to love what brog does and I can't fathom the celtics want to move him becuase of his fit, but if you can turn him in to two reliable role players or a player of similar caliber but maybe a little more versatile... They likely do that. Will be interesting to see how that plays out, im hoping he is not too upset about the initial trade and is ready to prove that he never should have been on the block.

Lol nope we dont need a floor general. We have brogdon and white. Brogdon is not a wing. Cant bring ish, powell, jamychal, etc here. We are currently full. We can open 1 roster spot by cutting champegnie. The only open spots we have right now is 2 2W. count the players and realize roster maximums. pg: white, brogdon, pp, banton, jd (2W) wings: jt, jb, hauser, brissett, walsh, champegnie (can be cut before aug) bigs: kp, rob, al, kornet what we need is a big.

@@westburns24 perhaps attitude wise but i'm not hearing good news out of charlotte about him. Position wise we dont need him. If we need a glue guy, we can actually get one while also addressing a position of need. Those 2 dont need to be mutually exclusive. Blake griffin is a solid example.
