    Thank you very much for getting on it and not rambling about everything under the sun. Tenth or twelfth video I've looked at, the first that actually did this simple job. Now I can go outside and do the same thing to my own vines.

    Southpaw Davey We grow so many of the European wine grape varieties here in California. These vines can not tolerate the local mildew fungus. Spraying copper or sulfur helps but the pruning keeps the light and air moving around the vines. If the vine is allowed to grow full size the fruit will usually be covered in mold.

    Very informative video. Does this pruning hold for cane pruned varieties as well? How about those vines that have no fruit clusters? Are those pruned? If so, how far back?

    Summer pruning is used with both spur and cane pruned grapes. Because most wine grapes are spur pruned and are susceptible to American mildew fungus, most spur pruned grapes require increased sun and air circulation. Since most American grapes are resistant to mildew and are cane pruned this step is frequently omitted.

    Thanks Bill, What do you think about copper and soap spray?

  • @GreenGardenGuy1

    @GreenGardenGuy1

    Soap isn't very effective on mites and when mixed with other materials it can burn the leaves right off of a plant. Years ago I used to use it to an extent but oil is much more effective and if you use the highest refined type it doesn't burn. Soap is notorious for burning plants. The only two organic materials that do a decent job on mites are oil or sulfur. Oil is best.

    Dear Bill, do you have any all in one organic mixture to spray grapevines in the growing season for downy mildew and powdery mildew and mites. Thanks heaps.

    You have too many different issues here to be controlled by a single material. Powdery mildew and mites can be controlled with sulfur. Downy mildew is controlled with copper sprays. Copper also controls powdery mildew but not mites. Oil is the best control for mites. It is possible to mix sulfur and oil or copper and oil. Beware of mixing sulfur and oil together if the weather is warmer than 75 though. I will probably burn. I would try copper and oil as a spray.

    @Ognjen Mali We have be holding the specific bottles to provide that information. No two brands have the same instructions. Once you have the oil and copper in hand use the mixing instructions on the bottles for grape. The oil and copper can together in the same tank or be sprayed one at a time.

    Hi GreenGardenGuy1, does it matter in what moon phase it has to be pruned the vine?

  • @GreenGardenGuy1

    @GreenGardenGuy1

    +Ana Zita Fernandez Like most folk wisdom no one seems to agree on when the right time could be. Some say prune in the descending moon, others say in the full and still others say in the ascending moon. I say prune when you have the time. I prune grapes by appointment schedule not moon signs and have never noticed much difference in the results. The one thing that I do try and adhere to is pruning in fall rather than late winter on the West Coast. In fall the sap runs down to the root. In late winter to early spring the sap is running up to the buds. If you prune grapes when the sap is running up they bleed everywhere. This doesn't kill them but I imagine it doesn't help either. In California I always finish grape pruning by Christmas. In the Midwest where winters are cold I always waited until danger of extreme weather was over before pruning and lived with the sap flow. If the guys are right about sap running down in the dark of the moon then give it a try, no harm done. Bill

    Would you cut back as close to the fruit for a deep red table grape. I thought you needed up to ten full sized leaves past the fruit cluster???

  • @GreenGardenGuy1

    People make rules, I am not aware of many of them. While pruning a couple acres of grapes I do not have time to count ten leaves on each cut. It has never seemed to make a lot of difference. The purpose is to create air and light around fruit to limit the mold growth. You must be down under.

    What about leaving some for next years grapes?

  • @GreenGardenGuy1

    This pruning is done when the berries are just formed. The vine regrowth will end up being more than was removed by the end of summer. If the extra vine is left in place it shades the berries and creates a favorable environment for mildew. If you are raising American grapes then you can omit this summer pruning. American grapes are resistant to mildew.

  • @GreenGardenGuy1

    ***** Growing grapes from seed is actually pretty simple. They come up all over in vineyards where the fruit has dropped to the ground. My guess is your Dad is leaving out the stratification step. The seeds need to be planted and then experience winter cold either in the environment or in the refrigerator. They will not come true to seed though, the vine will be different than the parent. They are super easy from cutting though and then they hold the genetic type. The only trick is taking the cuttings in winter and putting them in the soil right side up.
