When I lived in Inglewood we lived only 3 blocks from the Wisons. My baby sitter went to highschool with Dennis and Carl. Mike Loves sister Maureen played the harp at the church where I was babtized. She was the harp accompanient to my mothers solo singing performance. I vageuly remember our babysitter telling my mom about Brian firing his dad.

Although this was a highly fictionalized account of The Beach Boys' story, it was still entertaining. Clearly the focus was primarily on Dennis and a little on Brian. The guy they cast as Mike Love was spot-on. The casting of Carl seemed to be an afterthought.

I heard in Brian Wilson's autobiography that there was one film that focuses on the struggles of the Beach Boys that his family refuses to let him watch, to this day. Personally, I love this movie and think that the creators put a lot of love into this. Let's face it though, the focus was more on their erratic personal lives (Brain and Dennis, the rest are side characters) instead of their music, which really should be paid homage to more often. Brian also wrote in his book that the neighbours would often hear screaming matches between Murray and Dennis yet Brian was absolutely insistent that Murray was not physically abusive in any way towards his family. Overall. I love the movie yet I am almost certain that Brian Wilson will never watch it, which saddens me.

I have a fond memory of watching this TV movie, back in my teens on TV. It's the reason, I love Bruce Greenwood as an actor. He is SO good as Dennis Wilson. And, like "Love & Mercy" it uses a fresh and creative way to frame and present the film. In that, they have two actors playing the younger and older Brian Wilson, but here, they book mark the start and end with his accident when he went into the sea to try and find his lost personal items. Greenwood brings a vulnerability to his Dennis. And, this really IS about Dennis Wilson. Yes, it does take the viewer through the life and troubles of The Beach Boys but it is all from his perspective. He's also in a great series, as lead, called "Nowhere Man" (in 1995). So, imagine my absolute pleasure at seeing him as Captain Pike in the JJ Abraham "Star Trek" reboot films? As for the film itself? It does suffer from the same issues TV movies have: low budget, some questionable dialogue and choice of actors and only show certain points in the history of the subject. But, overall, the cast is very VERY good. It has to be said it should be congratulated for not shying away from showing the truth of Dennis' decline. Because some would avoid painting the subject in a bad light? You know with the other characters acting in awe of them. However, I will always love it. Now in 2024? It is even more truthful because from 2017 to June 2021 I became a serious drug addict and alcoholic. Now clean for 2 years, 7 months and 15 days. I understand, in a far deeper and cold light of day way, what addiction and self destructive behaviour can do to your life. Whether it's Dennis Wilson or anyone else. We are dealing with human being in trouble. As for the Beach Boys? Their music has got me through some very dark times. 11/10 David

I think this is a very good movie that shows how hard the relationship between teens and their parents can be. The contrast of love and the differences between the two brothers is not common. The inspiration, the gift, the struggle, ... I had never heard their early music, I think it was beautiful in many ways. The friendship of the whole group is encouraging and how the father's disapproval pushes the eldest son away and - the whole group - in a wrong direction is heartbreaking. One wants to believe by now we have understood how important the relationship between parents and our children is! There is a lot to learn out of pain. Great acting, great filming, in spite of the unpleasant sexual behavior. Blessings.

I was thinking that Dennis was jealous of Brian, and hid in women and alcohol. With all due respect to them as humans, Dennis' complete disrespect towards the dignity of a woman shows his own unsolved problem. Brian loved his brother, protected him and because of his own struggles ended up filling himself with food and then fell for drugs. Or do you think I got it wrong? I must have missed sg, because I thought Brian's friends were concerned about his weakness, it was only Dennis who seemed not to care. This changed everything, four decent, hardworking, inspired boys turned to five young men despaired for money and fame, even the rhythm of their music changes, their appearance and their way of life. I am glad that B. found a woman to love and who loved him. @@ttacking_you

@@ttacking_youThere's so much to say. There's a part where D. says: "He (the father) didn't hate us, he hated rock 'n roll." I agree. A writer said: "We can't see our reflection in the water unless it is calm." I want to believe that D. was seeking this peace every time he went looking for his brother. It is hard to accept that others have what we lack. It may be hard to find that which is good in us, when others reject us. He seems to have been trying, but drugs and alcohol certainly do not help. There is so much that is understood now that wasn't clear back then. I think we have it easier in so many ways, but each one of us has to find their own path. R. I. P. Dennis W.

Went away to the university of Michigan to become a dentist join the band. David Marks join The Beach Boys. And there was a scene where The Beach Boys rented some musical instruments. One of the amplifiers they rented was a Vox amplifier those amplifiers did not come to America until 1964 with the Beatles. This was way back in 1962 so that was definitely messed up.

Lots of good comments here already! I agree that it would be better to have Murray Wilson as a dad than Joe Jackson but that is not saying much. Unfortunately, so many parents try to live vicariously through their children. It is a great disservice to them - especially when they are talented and need to be able to spread their wings and discover for themselves what they can do. It is also very cruel to beat down and reject the average child who doesn't have exceptional talents, etc. As per the comment the movie was really mostly about Brian and Dennis, that does seem to be the case. However, it is a largely fictionalized story of the Beach Boys. Known details about their lives are interpreted by writers, producers, actors, etc. and the unknown details are filled in to make a good story. There could be many different movies made about the band that focus on different aspects of their lives, interpret the facts with a different emphasis and fill in the gaps differently. The choice to focus on Brian and Dennis is an interesting one because the contrast between how their characters reacted to the same reality is notable. Both were essentially abused by their father (beat up, emotionally beaten down, etc) but Brian turned it inwards and was self-medicating with food and joints and eventually developing mental health issues while Dennis went external in terms of fighting back and acting out sexually. I found it interesting that while Dennis seemed like a real yahoo in most of his interpersonal interactions, there were flashes of concern and empathy that were much greater than what was displayed by any of the other characters. I think that these flashes demonstrated what was going on deep down and are what made his character especially tragic. It was like he was just searching for love and acceptance and he was willing to stand up to his dad, for example, when Brian was getting verbally beaten down. He went about things in less than effective ways. The same was true for Brian. There are a lot of stereotypes about oldest and middle children and Brian and Dennis demonstrated many of them. Its a good movie and I hope that many people watch it. I would also be interested in seeing more videos about the Beach Boys and see how other people tell the story.

Yes, it is fiction but there's nothing anyone can do to stop people believing it all. You have to take it for what it is - a film based loosely around some of the events that actually did occur. Personally I thought it was worth watching just to see the guy - in that ridiculous wig - who's meant to portray Charlie Manson. Hilarious, absolutely hilarious. And California must get some really warm winters what with all those scantily clad young women sitting around on that yacht at the end of December (Dennis died on December 28th 1983).

I know this movie is full of anachronisms but it's still, IMO, the best Beach Boys biopic. Watch this along with the Dennis Wilson BBC documentary from 2008 and you'll get a decent overview of the band's trials and tribulations.

I actually really enjoyed this. I know it's not really accurate, but biopics rarely are. (Braveheart, anyone?) Shame the final shot was Dennis riding off into the flattest surf I've ever seen, though. 😆

I thought American Family was bad enough---but this one is PURE FANTASY! Brian was tough and macho and jealous of Dennis? Dennis was arrogant and cocky? Murry was laid back and not as aggressive? "Barbara Ann" was recorded as a song with a full band and not as a party? About the ONLY thing they got right was Mike not being near as cool and balding! This one was total BS---a complete re-write of their history! Who wrote this garbage--the National Enquirer? One of Dennis's groupies?

Again---this movie was a total farce and embarrassment to their true history, and I feel sorry for anyone who watch this tabloid nonsense who bought into this complete historical re-write, where they even got the "history" wrong!!!!!!

They could have picked any song prior to 1965 and they would have been close to accurate. They picked the one song with a "party" atmosphere--even in the studio, and Murry long since gone!

Historically inaccurate. Al Jardine left the group for a short time to attend school. The shot on the beach when they are all 5 holding the surfboard Jardine was not there. David Marks was. He was also on the first four albums. Surfin Safari, Surfin U.S.A., Surfer Girl and Little Deuce Coupe. Marks was their neighbor from across the street.
