Summer Camp Sexual Abuse of Kids Is an Ongoing Problem

Millions of kids head off to sleepaway camp each year, but how safe are they? At Camp La Junta in Texas, an elite boys camp that has been around for over 90 years, a boy said he was touched inappropriately by a 20-year-old counselor in 2009. Crime Stoppers of Houston says they found over 1,000 victims of sexual assault at other camps across the U.S. over the last 10 to 15 years. An Inside Edition investigation uncovered a slew of counselors who were found guilty of sexual misconduct at camps across the U.S.

I've never understood why parents were okay with their kids going across the country to stay with hundreds of adults they don't know for three months.

Parents should think of this before letting their kids go to summer camps.

Being a parent is a year round job, what kind of parents sends their kids away for 3 months? We called summer camp a couple days at grandma's house, the ONLY person you can trust 24/7....maybe.

You can see how he's trying to reassure himself by hugging himself. He's obviously traumatised, they desurve better justice then prison it's disgusting.

It’s horrible that these children were taken advantage of like this. If you’re going to send kids to camp, the safest thing to do is send them to day camp. That way your kid won’t be showering or sleeping in a cabin with adult strangers.

Kids can't even enjoy a day in summer camp. Honestly it'd be better to send your kids to a local children's summer activity center instead of leaving them miles away with potential predators.

As a child who was sexually assaulted at the age of 7/8 I am disgusted. I never told anyone until I was 10, I am currently 12. Sadly the man that did it was still technically a “minor”. This just disgusts me. This is why we need safer places for children and people in general. 😔

I've never understood the mindset of sending your kids to a remote place with random strangers

Did his parents get the kid immediately after receiving that letter or did they ignore him?

As a camp counselor myself, this breaks my heart. We want parents to trust us to be with their kids, not to think of us badly.

I worked in a summer camp that did not tolerate any sexual abuse. I am glad that the camp I worked in did background checks.
