I always say Mark looks like he's making a balony sammich. You can often see a richtus of anguish over the face of an accomplished musician. Or other uncontrollable acts of muscle memory. Terry WIlliams talks to himself while drumming for instance. Mark Knopfler outplays them all and looks like he's standing over a sink, contently drying the dishes.

The drummer is Terry Williams. Absolutely phenomenal. Without him the effect wouldn't be the same.

Luckily it's not any sport so it's all very subjective as it's impossible to compare let's say EC to John Scofield, Pat Metheny to Jimy Hendrix or Mark to Paco De Lucia. One of the greatest for sure, my favorite definitely as not only is he amazing player with very distinctive, unique sound but also very talented singer and one of the greatest songwriters as well ( no too many of them on such level, combining those 3 elements in a mastery way)

The first part you said is absolutely true. The second one is childish. Page and Clapton are guitar gods as well. There's no comparison possible at that level. You can't discuss Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Beck and Gilmour: the origin of popular rock music and of all its branches.

My favourite guitarist , his touch and sound are so above . And the music itself is always his focus, not to try to show everyone "here I am". That's what sets him apart. Distinctive love and respect towards music and its purity itself

I’ve heard Mark play this song many many times, this is among the best I’ve ever heard. Very nice accomplishment with sax and keyboard. Mark is a great guitarist. He’s so unassuming on stage but in full command. Thank you for sharing this gem.

I went on a Mark Kophler bender for 2 yrs straight....he is Way up on the High Confidence Level of anything he does.. 💘 Their is a cop in our very small but huge mountian town that is No Joke a spitting image of Mark down to the way he moves and his clothing. I came around this corner to see wth was going on and a plain clothes cop (All I saw was Mark no cop) I fainted,, fell down in the dirt while my dog wrapped his leash around me..He's looking at me like..wth is wrong with this one...so I told him , he agreed that everybody says that..and long story short I almost got arrested for mildly intoxicated (well I was just trying to catch up and lost control) so yeah thanks for listening 🎸 🎶 💘

watching mark do those powerful solos and there is those awesome closeups of his fingers making magic is just fascinating

Once again I’m late for a meeting.. BUT its so worth it. I can listen to this song everyday for the rest of my life and just never get sick of it. He’s the greatest of the great. God Bless you Mark.

Apart from being a great songwriter, he's a thorough gentleman!

Judas Priest! Mark Knopfler is one of the most underrated guitarists/composer/lyricists ever. He writes incredibly artful songs, and has the ability to write a few pop songs to make his life secure. After the establishment of the 4 minute pop song, not many survived. Pink Floyd and Dire Straits got the "green light" for whatever they wanted. Side A of "Love Over Gold" has 2 songs. These 2 songs are as good as music gets.

I was at 2 of these Sydney concerts in 1986 - one in the front row. I’ve probably seen Dire Straits or MK about 10 times but the Sydney concerts are still my favourite of all time. I’m so glad they had a channel 9/MMM simulcast deal so we have a proper recording of the night.

Mark Knopflet is one of the best ever musians- great guitar player and great writer of songs....excellent musician 😀 all rounder and great band leader...!

The 138 people who put their thumbs down have serious problems with this amazing quality of music. 😉

I loved him when I was younger but now I have a different appreciation of his music. Honestly, I listen to him everyday. I must admit my to favourites are " Romeo &Juliet " "Brothers In Arms" I play these 2 songs every day. The talented band and Mark Knopfler are legends♥️💖♥️

Hah, always thought the same. From 8:05 onwards always got me. This and the sunburst Schecter he plays on Tunnel of Love are two of the nicest sounding guitars. That warm tone... the latter one got sold on an auction 10 years or so, you can find sound demos here on YT (search for "Mark Knopfler's Schecter Strat")

@@blackpanterpower-fh5gn Nope. It's a Fender. 3:53 shows the fender headstock. The Calling Elvis guitar is his yellow maple flametop guitar, which is a Pensa-Suhr.

Jan Grønkjær Pedersen Very humble bloke is Terry in his 70s now and enjoying retirement and a big fan of Swansea City ! He once donated his gold discs from his time with Dire straits to the club when they were in financial trouble what a legend.

Each live performance is like a new song. Amazing

I've been listening to this song over 100 times I think, still get that ear orgarsm, no joking, thank you Mark, Dire straits and all of the great music

Incredibly melodic and driving. Never get tired of this theme and variations. Always fresh always inspiring.

Seen lots of people play that end solo, i have played it myself, but nothing compares to mark 👌

After the incredible music of the 60s, the 80s were my absolute favorite. The 70s were me on the road playing music gig to gig on the east coast and later years in Philly buckling down to get a medical degree. By the 80s, I was free, making money, living at the beach in California. Incredible days... some of the best music of our lives...now just a memory...like so many things... now gone. How privileged we were...

Best version is from live les Arenes in nimes(in my opinion). However, we know Mr knopfler its his song so he plays it as he likes. In fact we all love his music so everyone hears something special in each version. All the versions are unique

The tour started on 25 April 1985 in Yugoslavia and ended on 26 April 1986 in Sydney, Australia. The tour included 248 concerts in 23 countries and 117 cities-all concerts were sold out.

I was just about to post a comment about the look on his face at 8.35 when I saw your comment. Someone else made a similar remark many years ago. MK seems bored. The comment at that time was "Gee I must remember to get the milk and bread and bring it home like my wife said". Basically I think MK knows he's so shit hot on guitar he doesn't need to look like he's even trying.

I think this Is the best concert of dire straits with Alchemy, and the best concert of all time, with the greatest band and the best guitarist ever...
