Silence...then a moody guitar melody culminates in a faint whisper: “Sie sind hier...”. Vocalist M.'s brief utterance is German for “they are here” and of course refers to the Ancient Ones of Lovecraftian lore central to SULPHUR AEON's lyrical, conceptual, and visual cosmos. Those 'sombre tidings' are yet just a short prelude to the crushing, pitch black waves that will wash over you once the quintet swings the almost seven minutes long 'hammer from the howling void'. Marking their fourth record to date, and first in five years, the opening track to “seven crowns and seven seals” is a bold statement defining the group's approach and ambition. Just like Lovecraft invented a whole world of unspeakable creatures and supernatural horrors during the early 20th century, SULPHUR AEON, more than ever, dug deeper into their own artistic range, crafting an album of equal otherworldly beauty and impact.
Filed under blackened death metal, and inspired by the likes of Morbid Angel, Dissection, Behemoth, Emperor, to name but a few, creative mastermind T. gradually transformed SULPHUR AEON from a duo project in 2010 to a much respected entity within the international metal circuit relying on quality releases first and foremost, and performing live selectively. Never shy of admitting their humble roots in the former industrial heart of Germany, T. and M., drummer D. - who joined the fold in 2011, and both guitarist A., and bassist S. who became members of the cult in 2018, have grown into an impressive, tight union poised to forge something unique and memorable.

SULPHUR AEON's newest opus is blessed with contrasts, an astonishing sonic ebb and flow. Expect a barrage of angular riffs and ferocious blast beats, refined layers of melodies, dense atmosphere and triumphantly chanted choruses. Expect ethereal acoustic guitars, subtle synths, tinges of goth ('the yearning abyss devours us'), lush leads, e-bow-parts, vigorous aggression ('arcane cambrian sorcery'), monumental heaviness shifting into hypnotic vocal patterns ('seven crowns and seven seals), and a grand finale ('beneath the ziqqurrats'). Transcending genres and always preserving a natural coherence, “seven crowns and seven seals” is swathing cinematic metal excellence perfectly captured and honed by long-term collaborators Simon Werner and Michael Zech (Secrets Of The Moon, Bølzer etc.) whereas mastering duties were handled by V. Santura (Triptykon, Dark Fortress). In terms of artwork, this time around SULPHUR AEON broke with the tradition of working with Ola Larsson once again but teamed up with Italy's Paolo Girardi to depict a Lovecraftian apocalypse opposing the album's opulence and dynamics with a rawer style.

UNFASSBAR!!!!! 🫠🥲🖤 Hatte diese Platte schon seit ein paar Wochen in meiner "SpäterAnsehenListe", irgendwie aber immer wieder aufgeschoben, sie anzuhören. Ich habe gerade gemalt, als mir KZread im AutoPlayModus diese Platte in die Kopfhörer gejagt hat. Mir ist fast der Stift aus der Hand gefallen, weil mich die ersten Sekunden direkt eingesogen und in eine andere Welt geknüppelt haben... Ungefähr 3 Minuten später kamen mir die Tränen... SO umgehauen und emotional berührt hat mich schon lange keine Scheibe mehr. Von vorne bis hinten zum niederknien, ein Song genialer als der andere. Wahnsinn, was da erdacht und so perfekt umgesetzt wurde. Ich bin hin und weg. Danke für den empfundenen Moment des Glücks, den ich gerade eben verspüre.

They legit make the most evil sounding death metal in the world. It's not a wall of sound, it's the curshing weight of an entire ocean on your shoulders, blackness all around you yet you feel the eyes of an eldritch being watching you. Calls... from... below...

Album ov the year.
Hope the band reads this comment : AOTY and one of the best metal albums of the last 40 years. The best band from Germany (seriously)and one of the best metal bands (not just extreme metal) around at the moment. Some guitar parts remind me of old Queensryche (Operation mindcrime). Coincidence? I totally love it!!! Although I am not 100% sure why the fantastic guitars are so low in the mix. Ok, they leave space for the really fantastic vocals. In general, I love the organic and huge production, just the guitars could have been a little more louder. Anytime I want to listen to some other released stuff, I fast return back to this monumental album, because I know what I get. The melancholy of the songs do fit perfectly to the German auntumn. My 20 year old son bought and now reads books from Lovecraft just as a result of Sulphur Aeon. This ist a huge compliment for the band, as it would have been easy for my son to listen to the popular German Hiphop stuff instead. Even my wife started listening to this album, because father and son convinced her to try. I can only hope, the band get the recognition it deserves, but I am not sure if this will happen.

If you like German Death Metal and Lovecraft, make sure to check out Alkaloid, if you don't know them. Their album Liquid anatomy is a monster of riffs and melodies.
Their last album is a tough act to follow, but god damn, I think this one surpasses it. No one pulls off abyssal atmosphere and crushing heaviness / despair like Sulphur Aeon.

Ein absolutes und atmosphärisch dichtes Death-Black-Metal-Cthulhu Hammer-Album mit infernalischen Anrufungen der Alten und sogar teilweise rockigen und jazzigen Elementen. Von den ungestühmen und brutalen Anfängen des ersten Albums bis hin zu diesem Meisterwerk !!!!! Verdammt noch einmal - ich liebe dieses Album !!!!! 🤘😎👍

Sulphur Aeon has been my favorite metal band to have the Lovecraft Mythos as their center ideology and/or lyrical themes. Their are so many metal bands trying hard to get it to work and not seem overly cheezy. The Great Old Ones are also fully invested in the Mythos and do it well! Solid Lovecraftian DM/BM!

What a ride. This album rips and stands on its own next to “Scythe”, which is almost perfect. No band has put out a higher quality 3 album streak than Sulphur Aeon.

I dont like it. Yes its atmospheric but no blackened death metal. It reminds me of Amon Amarth yes it is
Nine minutes in and quite boring. The first album definitely is their best. No riffs or melodies that stand out,or haven’t heard on other bands’ albums. But that’s difficult for every band since all great riffs,leads and melodies are already invented/created. The number one reason there are no10/10 albums for me the last 20+ years.
Sadly i will have to stop to follow this band, don't like the style and direction where they go..for me their last album i like is "gateway to the antisphere". I understand people like well produced melodic metal music and that's just not my cup of tea.
Несмотря на то, что кругом сплошные восторги, внесу долю конструктивной критики. Инструментальная часть звучит мутно и невнятно. И даже несамостоятельно, я бы сказал. Вокал действительно стал лучше по сравнению с предыдущими альбомами (насколько я их помню), но сильных изменений это не принесло. Отчасти по причине, которая была указана первой, отчасти потому что вокалист всё равно не желает выводить мелодии до конца, и болтается где то между диссонасными гармониями и блэковой эпичностью, - так и не выбрав сторону. Альбому катастрофически не хватает твёрдых акцентов, которые можно встретить даже у изначально заряженных как амелодичные, групп - например Immolation. Это безусловно слушабельно, но не более. Ни о какой высокой степени убедительности музыкального материала здесь речь не идёт. Уж не говоря о том, что лавкрафтовская атмосфера осталась всего лишь декларацией, но никак не ощущаемым самим по себе элементом. Для примера. На двух первых альбомах Septic Flesh, атмосфера происходящего настолько аутентична и достоверна, что сразу понимаешь зачем это всё, куда, и откуда появилось. Даже не читая текстов. Только для того это сделав впоследствии, чтобы убедиться в том, что оно всё так и есть. Этот же опус излучает надуманность и амбиции, которые совсем не соответствуют заявленной планке.
