Sulekha Ink Part 2: Firingi Kali Box Set, Fountain Pen Ink

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I discovered the Firingi Kali box set of ink about a year and a half ago, and it took ages for me to get it from India. That said, it's not expensive, and it's a pretty interesting set with a good back story. In this video, I swatch the inks, provide some background and a bit of a writing sample.

Feels proud, perhaps I am among some of the few viewers who can read that Bengali Script. Being a Bengali, Being an Indian each time I watch these videos full of Indian sentiments, history on this channel I feel proud . Keep up the good work. A few months ago I posted this whole story on Facebook, Many Bengalis didn't even know this story. I find myself blessed for so many reasons. One of those: I am Bengali.

When I heard the Indian term "firingi", I mistakenly heard it as "Ferengi," which triggered my imagination. I started envisioning a wooden box designed to hold ink for the extraterrestrial species in the Star Trek universe. The box took an incredibly long time to reach you, it was as if it had been on an interstellar journey. Despite the long wait, it was worth it in the end, as your video is a treat. You are a great story teller. Thank you.

Thanks! I immediately thought of the Ferengi, too, when I heard the name the first time :-) Most of the year that it took to get this box was my attempting to talk different people into shipping it to me... once it was packed up and in the mail, it was just a month or so.

"Farhang" is the Persian word for foreign and "farhangi" means outsider/foreigner - Historically it was use it for foods and people from outside the known world. Example: Strawberries (introduced through trading from North America) are called toot-farhangi in Persian. It's a Persian word borrowed in Hindi and used in the court language. It was an interesting choice for the race and when I first time I watched Star Trek introduce the Ferengi years ago, it triggered my imagination as to what they were.

The wordplay is certainly unmistakable. You might also be interested to know that there is a possible further association with a famous temple dedicated to the goddess Kali in Kolkata known as Firingi Kalibari, apparently named after Anthony Firingi (originally Hensman Anthony), a Portuguese poet who lived in Bengal about 200 years ago and practiced folk music in Bengali.

@@thewetpen In bengali Kali means ink, also Kali is a goddess. So it is a wordplay with the word here. Firingee was also used to refer to westerners (white people). Since Antony was Portuguese, so he was known as Antony Firingee.

Just bought a Sulekha pen and the blue-black ink from Sompurna Series... Also, because I am Bengali, I am going to shed some unwanted knowledge here: 6:14 "Mayer Paye" literally means 'to the feet of mother' (mother here referencing to Kali) as in offered to the feet of Kali(mother). It is also plays on the mythology of the blood-stained feet of Kali (due to all the slaughtering she was doing). Choron Dhuli: literally translates to 'feet dust', the traditional way to convey respect to God/Elders/Teachers in Bengal is to touch their feet and then touch your head and chest. As in taking the 'Dust of their Feet' as a blessing to your head and heart. In s old literature you also see the practice of touching your hand to your mouth but fortunately we don't do that any more. Sughondi Ashirvad: Translates to 'Blessing like a sweet aroma' Sandhya Puja: Translates to 'Evening worship', it is still a practice in Bengal (as in both West Bengal and Bangladesh) and India to worship the idols of your Gods that are in your house in the evening. Bel-Pata: Pata means leaf and Bel is a type of fruit. So, Bel-Pata is the leaves of the plant-bearing Bel (which you can use to make an awesome drink during the hot and humid summers of Bengal). These leaves are always used in religious ceremonies. Also, the background music at 7:30 resembles Punjabi music, not Bengali. Also, Firingi is a relatively old term, but in Bengal, it's used to refer mainly to the British or in general any White European.

I just got home from Japan (I bought 32 bottles of ink), so I know that at least for most airlines, bottles of ink are not a problem as long as they're in checked luggage. And the nice thing is that even though these inks are only available from Sulekha directly, shipping within India is free, so getting it to your friends should be no problem, even if they're not in Kolkata.
