I don't bother with the expensive substrates at all. I do natural tanks & let them cycle through the nitrate/ite & algae uglies to quickly build a stable ecosystem for the tank first. I put my critters in, even shrimp before fully cycling with no problems. If you're having to do regular water changes, something in the tank is harboring bad bacteria. If you want to avoid this altogether, all some pumice or gravel substrate & innoculate it with beneficial bacteria (bought or cultured) in water with a filter for a week before adding anything else.

I 'm unable to get Salty Shrimp Sulawesi 8.5 so I bought the 7.5? Is this ok? I'm just starting to set up my tank and I want everything to be perfect x I have lava rock media for the base and larger pieces for decoration? RO water, Salty , and a good heater. I'm using a Hamburg Matten filter as I have a mature one already running in another tank. I think I have everything I need? Thank you for your video I really enjoyed it :(

I believe it will work. I had more success with 8.5 but lots of people I've chatted with uses 7.5 without issues

Do the Cardinals and the other Sulawesi shrimp interbreed? I've been keeping Neocaradina for awhile now, and have recently come across these beauties. I've also found that they're possibly extinct in the wild, and wondered about breeding programs to help reintroduce them as well. Or at least keep them alive and well within the aquarium trade.

It's doing well. It didn't affect the hardness or ph. A few friends use it also with success. Hope that helps

I am setting up a siluwasi tank and I am new to them so I have a 10g tank that I layered in inert black sand and I am adding broken lava rock from my yard since its abundant here and very airy and holy. I dont plan to use RO water, but distilled water remineralized since an RO system is cumbersome for me. I am currently just aging the tank with tap water in front of a window with just a (soon to be added airstone). I also was considering breaking up a marimo ball and shoving it in a few of the holes in the rock. Of course, after the tank has greened up nicely, I am going to remove the tap water and replace it with the remineralized water and take that opportunity to practice keeping the water stable since this will be a major investment and I dont want to mess this up, Does it sound like I’m on the right path or an I looking forward to disaster? I expect the tank to be ready in about 6 months then I will add preseeded sponge filter from one of my other tanks and a heater. (I’ve also decided to use an HOB with a prefilter as well.) Any advice you have for me is truly appreciated. I watched your video and loved it! You gave me even more ideas about breaking up more rock and adding more height to the tank. (I should add that the tank will be moved away from the window before adding the shrimp. My tap water almost can handle these shrimp alone but it’s PH is just a little too low at 7.5 but comes out the tap at 160-180 tds so these shrimp feel more comfortable for me, unlike caradina, which is a huge swing the other direction. Even my tap hardness comes in at siluwasi comfort levels. I think this is the only time I wish my water was just a bit harder, lol.)

I thought they were considered brackish shrimp needing salt in the water but now I’m being told they are completely freshwater I have a 20 long that has been set up for 2 years now and all I have in it are some cherry shrimp but I’ve always wanted these shrimp. I have harder water where I live do you think I can by with a tds In the higher 200s or no

what a great question, tds is often a mis conception as what's in the 200ppm tds? i keep mine at ph 8.1, tds 130, gh around 6 kh around 3. those would be the ideal parameters for sulawesi shrimps. also temp of 28C or 84F, so it depends what the 200ppm tds consists of, the idea way would be to use rodi water start from 0 then add the remineralize salts to get you to the parameters closest to their wild or home bred parameters hope that helps

Is it necessary to use Sulawesi mineral 8.5 or any shrimp salt? Couldn't find any shrimp salt in the local shop and online shop and if I have to import one the tax will be super high. Do you have any alternatives?

I've been testing seachem tangayiki salts and thru bring the ph up pretty well also. Shrimp king makes a sulawesi salt also

If you use saltyshrimp sulawesi 8 5 its doable. It depends on your source. If its from the wild its around tds 100. Nit I've kept it at 150 and theh still bred for me

Do you think sharp edges from the lava stones could harm the sulawesi shrimps? I broke a gew large stones into small pieces and worried they could cut themselves. On the other hand, maybe after biofilm and algae has grown on them it might be less harmful? Thanks!

I had to thunk about this for a little but. I personally don't think the edges would harm them. Compared to large fish with fleshy areas if they crash into it. I haven't seen any issues myself so far

@@RWAquariumPages corydoras for example need gravel/sand without sharp edges, thats why i was thinking it might be harmful for sulas since they on the rocks most of the time. When i was breaking the stones yesterday into smaller 2-4cm pieces, i could really feel the sharpness. Will give it a try and be on the lookout just in case. Thanks!

Great question and highly debated topic. Neocaridina can accept a wide range In my sulawesi tanks they do fine and also breed But mine are homebred bloody mary. If theres too many neos just pull them out if they start to out compete the sulawesi shrimps for food

@@RWAquariumPages honestly idk if that works..but if your shrimp is still doing good i guess there should be no problem..i'm telling you that coz i currently try to keep sulawesi..dissolving the salts was a real challenge as i dont have a co2 that is prescribed, and the TDS pen that i have i am not sure if its accurate or not..so i put the salts in microwave for couple minute and it seems to be dissolve..right now i got about 5kH, 6dGh and 190 TDS value..still wait for a couple day before i add my shrimp..wish me luck

They are two different things. Blue green is a bacteria not an algae. Make sure there is enough water flow abd nutrients are in balance and ensure that plants or rocks you introduce are clean and free of blue green spores
