Suite Gothique: Toccata - Léon Boëllmann // Nancy Cathedral

Музыка

Léon Boëllmann's Toccata forms the concluding movement of the Suite Gothique published in 1895 two years before his untimely death at the age of 35. He was the nephew as well as pupil of Eugène Gigout, and was choirmaster and later organist of the church of St Vincent-de-Paul in Paris. The brilliant toccata, with its moto perpetuo effect, is dominated by an eerie pedal theme which is heard twice (in the tonic and dominant) before a brief development sections leads into a recapitulation and triumphant conclusion.
The cathedral in Nancy is home to a magnificent Cavaillé-Coll organ (sampled for Hauptwerk by ‪@PiotrGrabowski_Organs‬). Although much altered, it remains very much a French romantic organ, the earlier organ featuring the first 32' Bombarde built in France, a stop which was replaced with an identical version when Cavaillé-Coll overhauled the organ in 1861. I have previously recorded the preceding movements of the Suite Gothique on this organ:
Introduction & Menuet: • Suite Gothique: Introd...
Prière à Notre-Dame: • Suite Gothique: Prière...
Organ detail: piotrgrabowski...

A great performance, Marcus: bravo! This is the perfect tempo for the huge acoustic at Nancy and your deft playing ensures this is one of the most thrilling renditions of this iconic Toccata that I have ever heard in a recording. Awesome!

Thanks very much, Graham. I’m a bit wary of recording these famous pieces, there are so many outstanding performances out there already, all much better than my own so your compliment is much appreciated.

Very nice tempo, Marcus. Although a famous piece, certainly a tricky piece (I like it far more than the Widor 5 Toccata). Thanks!
