Sugar Cane Train (L K & P Narrow Gauge Train on Maui Hawaii)

This video was filmed in 1991 and represents the Sugar Cane Train at that date. The railroad is an authentic reconstruction of the trains that once trundled through the sugar cane fields on Hawaii. Start your trip in Lahaina on Maui's west coast. Lahaina's economy was introduced to sugar cane in 1850 and by the 1880s railroads began to move cane out of the fields. Beneath tropical skies in the shadow of the West Maui Mountains, your trip will take you over the 400 foot Hahakea trestle and on to Kaanapali and the Puukolii roundhouse. You'll also see the railroad being constructed and attend its birthing party. Watch its steam locomotives restored and tested on the historic East Broad Top Railroad in Pennsylvania.

My wife and I rode this in 2003. It was a great ride and the operation was very well run. I was saddened to not only hear about its passing, but that Lahaina apparently burned to the ground during the massive fires in August 2023. Nothing we remover from that trip is there now... 😢

The Sugar Cane Train. It’s another cool heritage railroad. My Uncle Mark and Auntie Kelly were at this narrow gauge railroad back in 2012, two years prior of it being closed down in August 2014. The railroad was abandoned until 2016 when they had started to reopen the railroad. I did got to see their Santa Express event back in 2018. Today they are currently working on restoring the railroad back in service again soon.

With Lahaina badly burned and most of the historic town mostly destroyed, the train is one of the very last historic treasures still standing thanks to the fact that the engines Anaka and Myrtle live in Kaanapali and were out of the fire's path as was the Trestle. With that being said, the locals will most likely want to keep the train, and will probably fight to hold onto one of the last historic treasures that was spared from the horrible fire.

My late wife and I rode on the Lahaina, Kaanapali & Pacific Railroad in 2005. I used to have some photos that we had taken of the passenger cars and after watching this video, I feel like going and looking for them. I am sad to hear that the railroad is no longer running and that it might not ever run again. If not, then one day I would like to return to Maui and just walk along the railroad tracks from Lahaina to Kaanapali, this would be in memory of my wife. 'Mahalo' for placing this video on KZread.

It is a shame because I went there earlier today and was in Lahaina (sorry if it was misspelled) I saw number 5 in display and she has been neglected as well as the tracks to. I overheard they are going to rip up the railroad to have space for a hotel on the land. It is sad I wish I got to experience it but I am going to walk along the tracks to but I recommend you do it soon before it is gone.

Sadly, the railway was sold off as developers bought the land along the right of way. The engine and tracks are to be sold; though idk who and what is sold. I just hope that wherever these engines and equipment goes, that they’ll be put to good use elsewhere.

@@exempligratia101 if I remember correctly, there is a railroad museum elsewhere in the Hawaiian islands that has train trips using narrow gauge diesels although they don’t have any operating steam locomotives at the moment. They have steam engines on display and I suppose it’s possible that the old sugarcane train locomotives, and rollingstock might go there. Honestly, I hope that they remain in the Hawaiian islands as long as they can get restored back to service because while I have never been to Hawaii, I do think that it is quite a shame that those pieces of history aren’t able to contribute to the preservation of their State history. If I had to choose what would happen to them, I would have that they would be restored elsewhere in Hawaii, or at the very least I hope that they end up in safe hands.
