Sugar Cane. History and importance for the Dominican Republic

Sugar Cane
Sugarcane is a tropical grass. It is a giant grass that has a massive stem that is two to five meters high and between five to six centimeters in diameter.
The stem contains a juice rich in sugar (whose scientific name is sucrose), which is extracted and crystallized through a chemical process for consumption.
The lands where it is cultivated have to be hot and sunny so that the phenomenon of photosynthesis is oriented towards the production of carbohydrates, such as cellulose and other materials that constitute the foliage and the fibrous support of the stem.
During its development, the planting requires an adequate amount of water to allow the absorption, transport and assimilation of nutrients.
The growth period varies between 11 and 17 months, depending on the variety of cane and the area.
Its scientific name is saccharum officinarum.

I recently visted one of the bateyes. #62. The conditions are squallar. The people live in shambles. They don't have clothes that fit. Some have no shoes. They don't have proper healthcare or pensions. This is modern day slavery. This is not okay.

Actually these people live better than what they do in Haiti. They have a school where kids can attend and those homes where they live are provided by the employers.
