I actually read a fan theory that explained how baby doll was actually just made up by sweet pea. Everything that happens in the beginning to babydoll actually happened to sweetpea, but she couldn't handle the emotional trauma of killing her sister so instead she makes up a scenario where her sister died to save her. Her leaving on the train in the end symbolizes the escape from her emotions the lobotomy gave her. If you watch the movie from this perspective, it's actually pretty cool. :)

That's interesting. I think there's a few different interpretations you can have on this movie (some of which are in these comments) and they are all supported by the movie. People say that the only way to enjoy this movie is to turn your brain off, but I think this actually makes it worse. Sure some people will enjoy the cinematography and the pretty girls but I think there was a lot more thought that went into this story than people give it credit for. Of course you'll think things are meaningless when you instantly dismiss them as meaningless because "Zack Snyder's a hack."

  • @idawg7332

    @idawg7332

Except thats not a fan theory its the correct interpretation, sucker punch might not be a perfect movie but its certainly not an empty one The first hint that everything is in sweet pea's head is that the film opens with curtains and baby doll on a stage showing that none of it is real. The whole thing is poking fun at people who oversexualize girls in the fantasy genre and real life in general. Thats why the mental hospital turns into a brothel in the girl's imagination, ad why the girls then have individual dreams about fighting zombies, dragons and robots. The way they are treated in the asylum is more like how girls in a brothel are treated. When they escape into these fantasy worlds, the dragons, robots and zombies actually represent the men that are abusing and sexualizing them. So for example when the girls kill a zombie in the 3rd level its them imagining it while they are really sneaking past a guard to get the map to the asylum to break free. By killing dragons, zombies, and robots the film is showing how the actresses and snyder view the fanboys that like seeing scantily glad girls in fantasy movies. The film was dismissed as being sexist when its feminist. This is shown at the end when the bus driver who also appears in the fantasies tells sweet pea they still have a long way to go despite her escape and sweet pea says that everyone is responsible for their freedom (can't remember the exact line. Of course its all in sweet pea's head because of the film opening on a stage

Is the curtain opening sequence in the theater cut or just in the blue-ray/DVD cut? If this curtain scene is only in the blue-ray/DVD cut, then it proves once again what a terrible director Zack Snyder is because he may be good at visuals but he sucks at telling a story and movie editing because if the curtain scene is there to show that none of this is real and only in Sweetpea/Babydoll's head, then he should not have cut that scene from the theater version. This is the same problem with BvS where he cut out scenes that should have been left in and left scenes in that were not needed. I guess Snyder does that so that people will buy the Blue-Ray/DVD versions of the movie. I saw the movie only in the theater and I don't remember any curtain scene. If Snyder wanted to make a movie about how Sweetpea is having a tough time dealing with killing her own sister, then make Sweetpea the main character in the story and don't use another character to represent her mental state without proper explanation. That is why leaving the "Curtain Scene" in the movie is so important. It tells you that all of this going to be in Sweetpea's imagination and that Babydoll is just a representation of Sweetpea's fragile mental state.

Yeah the brothel was all in babydolls head, it was her way of dealing with reality. As they say in the beginning Babydoll gets all messed up when she loses her mom and then accidentally murders her sister. every time she "dances" she goes into little fantasies which in actuality is her dealing with her problems, the whole dragon scene represents her own internal struggle with the guilt of not being able to save her sister. there is soo much symbolism in every one of her "dance fantasies"

Movies don't always have to make sense to be good. Just look at The Wizard of OZ, Alice In Wonderland, and Labyrinth... Those are perfect examples. In my opinion, this film is unbelievably highly underrated. Extremely over the top, but not what I would call garbage... Garbage would be an Uwe Boll film (pick one). It's clearly obvious that this film was made from the heart, which is unfortunate; due to how badly it bombed in theaters.... but then again so did The Wizard Of OZ. I was always a huge fan of Return To Oz, and this film reminds me a lot of it.... mixed with a touch of Moulin Rouge and then some. Jeremy's right about Snyder... He is a very visual director. I didn't realize how much until I watched the Smallville fight, in Man Of Steel; in slow motion, just to really get a good look at what's goin on. I think he's one of the most skilled American directors of the decade, when it comes to his attention to visual detail; just as Tarantino is with his attention to dialogue. I totally understood and loved where Snyder was comin from when he did this film. Too bad most didn't. Which is kinda funny. It's the simplest story just like labyrinth, Alice in Wonderland, etc. It's all about going somewhere in your mind, to face your demons, regardless of how different or unrelated to your real demons, look.

My thoughts on Sucker Punch: Good: special effects, action (dream sequence) scenes, and entertainment value. Bad: bland acting, boring characters, non-sensical script, and the uncut version feeling the same as I saw the theatrical version (except the ending being a tad bit different). I didn't care about this movie, but it isn't the worst movie I ever saw from 2011 (that honor goes to [pretty obvious] Jack and Jill).

In the real world they were all in the nut house, then there was the 1st level fantasy of the burlesque house, then the 2nd level fantasies of all the crazy-ass battle scenes... which really didn't help it make more sense. The metaphors for the dancing worked because the message actually was about the audience. You came to see this movie for the female action heroes in tiny outfits, which was a metaphor for the primal hypnotizing dance of BabyDoll. And that makes the audience a metaphor for these incredibly horrible people who were watching her dance in the brothel. So it's basically saying "Hey, this is you.". Hence the title. I didn't get this either until I saw a video on it on Escapistmagazine.

This movie showed the depths people sink into everyday either by choice or by life and the fight it takes to get themselves out. It also illustrates that people need help and sometimes a decent person does a decent thing and saves someones life. Was there skimpy outfits...yes. Was the dance sequences over the top...yes, but it was a colorful way of making a sad and very true point. All victims (women and children mostly) should applaud this movie.

Here is the most clear and concise review of this film that is required. It is one of the very worst films of recent years. None of the pieces make sense, the acting is woeful, it has no real point, and I recommend anyone who is thinking about watching detritus like Sucker Punch change their mind, and if they really have to watch a film about attractive women getting their guns off, try Underworld or Kill Bill 1 and 2. Zack Snyder should hang his head in shame for this in much the same way that Lee Tamahori should for Die Another Day, and most of his other films too!

ryan barker I grew up with the original trilogy and I prefer Episode III to Episode 6 of the OT. Actually many people now a days give credit to ROTS because it was a pretty good film overall and Episode 6 was a pretty average movie. I think you're the one with nostalgia problems because I can easily destroy and nitpick the original trilogy as well. They're not perfect bud, not even close. You obviously have very little knowledge of cinema if you think a movie is it's individual parts rather than the sum of them. Citizen Kane, 2001 a Space Odyssey, Dark City, Stranger on a Train, Alien/Aliens, Bladerunner, A Clockwork Orange, etc. are all amazing films and regarded as masterpieces. HOWEVER, anyone with any sort of logical perception of film can NITPICK and CRITIQUE aspects of each films. A film is the sum of it's parts. So you may PERSONALLY dislike the prequels (2/3 are mostly bad) however you are not allowed to present your opinion as fact because it's not. The ratings for Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi are actually close to each other (go check IMBD and RT) so your beloved original film isn't as "holy" as you believe. People have different tastes so learn to grow up like a good boy and acknowledge that. The only time you can objectively review films are when you're writing a review on them for a group of people on a blog, a website, or for a film class. The person you replied to was giving a pure opinion. Also, there is no such thing as "bait and switch" in the film industry. That's not an official term so stop making up pseudo-terminology to look smart. We simply call them shallow films. Lastly, your term doesn't apply to the Matrix Trilogy because the Wachoswki Siblings WERE trying to incorporate THEIR OWN meaning and use common symbolism to portray that. Whether or not they succeeded (it's commonly thought they failed) is what is up for debate. YOU aren't the directors so it's not YOUR place to act like you know what they were trying to do with the film. All it takes is a simple Google search to look up what the siblings wanted people to get from the film. Did it work out thematically? Not really considering a large portion of the film goers were displeased, but that's another topic and still not what you were referring to. tl;dr don't act like a smart ass.

watch it again, I had to it's all in her head. The part where the nurse is telling the girls place is their heads can be as real as any pain and how she looks at the key the map then she sits in the chair about to be a veggie, then it shows all the scenes in her head, she had to help sweet pea because she could save her little sister, then it cuts back to her in the chair and she is now brain dead

I think you should do a re-review of this, but of the Director's Cut, the more time has passed, the more people are coming out saying how much they actually loved this film, and I just want to know if your opinion has changed over time as well. I remember seeing this opening night in IMAX with three friends and my dad. It only took me until the next morning to realize all of the metaphors (a lot were in the opening scene), at which point I spent that night at a friend's house and saw it again.

Sucker Punch is one of my fav. Considering Babydoll is in a mental institution... everything makes sense. It's like 3 different "lives" or ways to look at it. If someone watched the movie they know that the girls inside that place were probably raped and other things.. To make herself feel better babydoll imagines the " oh-we-dance-for-old-man-for-many" and when "they" decide to get out of there they need 4 things and get them which is displayed in those "lives" But hey, the movie was cut short. The expanded edition is much better.

I think, Jeremy, you should watch this movie and review it again. With all due respect, I think the men in the audience walked into to the theatre expecting this movie to be for them and a simply pleasing 2 hours of hot women and samurai swords and left "disliking it" cuz it was more than that and they missed the messages. Try it again. I think you'll change your mind.

I think there's some misinterpretation of this movie by some here. The scenes weren't "in her head" per se. She wasn't literally imagining them as in "oh, I'm imagining I'm a whore" or "I'm imagining I'm fighting dragons". The scenes are metaphors for her emotional state and feelings about her life and environment. She's been sent to this place where they exploit her as forced labor (she feels like she's being taken advantage of, and there's likely at least threats of sexual violence made against her). She literally does get the items (she starts the fire, and a girl escapes) and the "mission" scenes represent her struggle to acquire them, whatever form that may actually take in the real world. We never necessarily know what her real plan is. Maybe she was trying to escape. Maybe she was just trying to get herself into a position where she could forge the doctor's signature on lobotomy papers so that she could forget what she did to her sister. Maybe her plan was originally the first, but guilt and despair took over and she decided on the second (when aspects of her personality are "killed" in the metaphor). When she's "on a mission," she has emotionally escaped from feeling helpless and exploited to feeling powerful. We're never shown (at least fully, though we may get glimpses) what is REALLY happening with our unnamed (IIRC) protagonist (she physically resembles Baby Doll, but Baby Doll is just a symbol of a part of her and not the actual girl) from when she enters the asylum to the scene where she's taken to the chair. She did accidentally kill her sister, but we never see it happen. The scene we see is a memory of the event, which is why it doesn't look real.

Came to watch this review after watching your Batman v Superman review. I think you are pretty harsh with both these movies. Is it a Snyder thing? I felt that in both movies he was just trying to deliver new things. They are not for everyone and they are not perfect but they provide entertainment and originality. Also, if you're ever in Portugal say something and I'll totally invite you for a snack and a talk. Keep up the awesometacular work!

I don't think you actually got it. I mean sure you most likely got the main line of events but if you got it as deeply as it really goes then you would have enjoyed it more. There is no use fighting over it though, it's one of those movies where we'd need to watch it together and honestly discuss it face to face.

Here is the purpose behind the action scenes: it's a critique of 3rd wave feminism. It calls bull**** on the idea that sexualization can be empowering, (and not objectifying) if the person in question is on board with what is happening. It juxtaposes the sexy action scenes with her striptease distraction. Basically saying that these two actions are the same thing.

Ever wonder about guardian angels? Sucker Punch is about where one guardian angel comes from and the dark night of the soul she must walk through before she realizes that its no longer about her. She is in a position to help another human being and the sequences are her training to prepare her to arrive at that titanic moment. Here she must look past what she has done...to see what must be done now. The overwhelming guilt she feels can now be used to help Sweet Pea escape. Excellent fable.

I've got the art book and there's stuff like the ww1 thing has the complicated corridors parrelling the trenches, one of the zombies (the one with the burns) is the step father and apparently another one is Blue (so is the mama dragon later on) and all the orderlies are the other zombies. The soldiers are the other patients, I think. I've seen the MMM on the triple play as well.

Yes, but you must keep your mind open. There's a part in the movie where it is the setup for all the scenarios. Imagine your in a dream, but everyone see you as this helpless person. So in order to conform, you fight metaphorically. When you fight, you enter another dream hence where all the scenarios come into play. People think they have no continuity. However those people need to watch the very beginning to understand what happens.

What I got from the whole epic scenes was that they were all in Baby Doll's mind and it was what she saw when she was dancing. Her actions in those scenes were her actions when she was dancing and that's how I was able to make sense of all the crazy awesome visuals.

  • @CapeEniEer

i thought the girls dancing and doing what they dun wanna do and forcing to do all of these stuff equaled fighting for them. like babydoll is dancing and giving it her best shot for freedom, the trainer lady tells her that she gave her the weapon and now she has to fight and so babydoll fights, by dancing. so the fight scenes ARE actually a correct parallel in my opinion

@SuperCanonshooter I would imlpore you to watch it and judge for yourself, you really need to pay attention during EVERY scene, or else you'll miss something, you might not think much of what you just saw as you're watching it, but the more you think about it afterwards, the more you'll begin to truely form an opinion (I personally loved it). My advice, watch the extended cut, it makes so much more sense, and answers questions that people had from the theatrical version, albiet not all of them.
