I think people feel as though they need it to be happy because people are tired of having the stress factor of worrying about their respective livelihoods and those of their children. Average working people are constantly worrying about the costs of everything and have to work more and more just to build security for their futures. When the economy is bad, rich people will have setbacks, but they can more than likely still afford a good or at least a basic standard of living and not be easily out on the street as the average person will. They usually can access the best in terms of healthcare, education, professional connections, food, public safety and housing. They have long-term security of which others would dream of having. While they may not be happy in some aspects of their lives, overall, they can still continue to function.

I live in Southern California my home was appraised for 1.1 million. It is a normal 5 bedroom house not a mansion and my lot is tiny. I need millions to survive.

I'm a VP of Clinical Operations for a Biotech company in South San Francisco, and I earn over $400K not including stock options. It is unbelievable how many women don't understand this concept. I don't want to deal with a women that works 60-70 hrs like i do. I meet smart boss ladies every day around my age and the scoff at the fact that I deal with women that are intelligent, younger, in shape, and cater to my lifestyle. The biggest having the understanding I work 60 to 70 hrs a week and I don't always have time and they have to compliment the things I need done that I can't do because of my work and travel schedule..... The truth is women who work like I do, yes are successful but I see how they act and they are insufferable to deal with just as people. Men don't like them as a personality and guess what neither do women. That is why typically you see their friends are women that knew them in HS or college.

I totally agree with you... my husband has a couple of friends who have high earning women and I don't like any of them. They are arrogant, judgemental, and they aren't any fun. They don't have new friends either. Just childhood friends. I consider myself as an average earner, very down to earth, fun and I have friends I've met all through out life.
