Subwoofer Plate Amps? Dayton SPA250 vs Yung SD300 Tested

Dayton SPA250 vs Yung SD300 Plate Amplifiers
Send me a few bucks if you want to support: paypal.me/BigDWiz
Not exactly a direct comparison, but I decided to try both amps to replace the non-working 75-watt amp on my Boston Acoustics CR400 subwoofer. The 300 watt Yung SD300 is actually the cheaper of the two amps, yet rated to be the most powerful. It is a Class D design and has an open back. Will this cause problems if mounted inside a subwoofer enclosure, due to vibration? Only time will tell.
I also purchased the Class A/B Dayton Audio SPA250 to try out. This amp is rated 252 watts at 4 ohms with less than 1% THD. This is a VERY popular plate amplifier on Parts Express with nearly 5 star average with well over 200 reviews.
You may be asking...why 250 or 300 watts to replace a 75 watt amp? Well, because I can? Honestly, I wanted to choose popular models and have flexibility to use them in different applications in the future. Plus, I thought you guys would want to see these models tested, so I did this for you!

In my initial listening tests, they both sounded equally good to my ears. I’ve heard some concerns with the Yung’s reliability, I’m betting it is due to vibration of components on the circuit board. I may use mine externally, building a small enclosure for the amp, not sure yet

Love the review! Personally have the Dayton amp hooked up to a pair of 4ohm subs of mine. I Initially hooked them up in series, but tried them in parallel at 2ohms and the Dayton just pushes harder with no problems. May not be smart for the longevity of the amp, but is a testament to its quality. Keep it up wiz!

THANK YOU FOR THIS!! I actually bought the Yung SD300 about 3 months ago to power my old 12" 4ohm Powerbass car sub for a set up in my bathroom lol. (now I upgraded and it's going to go in the garage). It's been working great! I actually built a small box for the amplifier itself and added terminal inputs to it. That way I could plug in any sub to it as it's own standalone amplifier. Good to know it actually does do it's rated 300wrms! And interesting test at the end at 2.6ohms! Keep it up BigDWiz!!

@@wal Sorry for the Necro post but I need to vent. :-) I have 4 of the Yung SD300-6 plate amps. The first 2 died 2 and 3 months after warranty. The replacement plate lasted 4.5 years installed in a Klipsch Pro Media 5.1 sub-woofer cabinet driving the 2, 8 inch subs. But I religiously switched the unit off after using it and was used only for PC gaming. It died and the 4th replacement Yung plate I had on the shelf that whole time died after 2 minutes. The red power light comes on but does not switch to green when receiving signal. I've never had the sub volume past half way. My other sub cabinet was a 10 in Alpine speaker and was one of the original Yung plate amps I had that died just after warranty. All amps died with the same issue, seems to power up but no activation. Why did I buy them a second time, well the holes in the cabinets were already the right size. I will never buy a Yung plate amp again now though after 4 failures. Plate amps dying seems to be part of the territory with these things but I would definitely switch to another brand like Dayton next time.

Ive repaired a few of those Boston subs. A single 50 cent Mylar cap would fix your problem. They crack or blow out the bottom of the capacitor between the leads, kind of hard to see unless you look real close.

So the Yung does look impressive performance-wise compared to the Dayton. I am wondering about longevity though. I have read some reviews where people indicated their Yung plate seemed to run really hot and some said theirs eventually blew out and quit (not saying this would happen to everyone). I noticed as you indicated about the Dayton having sealed internals and that the heatsink is all external (much more surface area than the Yung heatsink), and the Yung releases all it's heat toward the inside too so if using a vented box then might be fine, but if you are wanting to run sealed, then it may run at hotter temps. I can see that as a drawback in my case because am looking to build a sealed box subwoofer, and originally thought to get the Yung and build the box with an intermediate chamber to mount the amp on, having a fan vent system (flowing outside air through it) to keep amp chamber cool. The Dayton seems to be better in the cooling aspect though, since it has external heat sink and would not require any special design to account for temperature. In your case, you have a small speaker and will probably never drive the speaker close to amp limits and thus it may never get that hot really...

BigD I also own a Boston acoustic Sub it is a larger model with a 300watt plate amp. I also had to take it apart replace one of the caps it fixed the issue mostly. But I think I need to take a look at the turn on circuit because the sensor to allow it to turn on with the system just isn't that great. I have been looking at the plate amps parts express offered.

Yea... too bad those are not shipping to Poland.. neither does the Yung SD300. We only have some frikking nonames PA3000000watts which I'm afraid to even switch on (called PA-300/400 etc.) Don't know if you've heard about those, but then again. Probably not.

Excellent work again my good friend. Nice to see these plates getting some straight up honest testing. Question: I am looking at rebuilding my home theatre/hi-fi system and was looking at replacing the plates on my two Klipsch KSW-10's with the Dayton plates. Was wondering if using a dedicated sub amp like the Dayton audio sa1000 might be a better investment vs buying two plates and replacing the old Klipsh plates on the KSW-10's This would allow for upgrade ability in the future should I decide to upgrade the subs in the system. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks again for all of your hard work!

  • @wal

    @wal

    4 жыл бұрын

Yeah that single SA1000 would do well for 2 subs as long as the impedance matches the amp

The yung may make a little less power, but the variable phase is quite important and often under used. Rarely do main speakers and subs perfectly integrate at 0 or 180 degrees. Also the yung will be more efficient as it’s class D. Great video by the way.

hey nice test there i have the dayton amp. i tried hooking up two 8 ohm 12 inch woofers to it, in parallel, and it got REALLY hot, enough where you couldn't touch the heat sinks. it was supposed to be for a light weight pa subwoofer. yeah i don't recommend that so now i have it on two other 4 ohm 12 inch woofers in series. now this is for home theater sub and it sounds great i'll always choose a/b over class d every time. how does the class d sound against the dayton? did you compare that?
