Subway’s Hidden Billions Revealed: How Its Founders Sliced Up A Fortune | Forbes

In the early 2000s, a footlong frenzy swept the United States. More than three decades after the first Subway opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the sandwich shop started appearing everywhere from strip malls to churches to Walmart Supercenters in all corners of the country. By 2011, Subway’s iconic yellow and green awnings were more ubiquitous than the golden arches of McDonald’s.
But almost as quickly as it arrived, the world’s seemingly insatiable desire for cheap subs began to wane. After the 2015 death of Subway cofounder and longtime CEO Fred DeLuca, which happened to coincide with a colossal public relations crisis for the company when its spokesperson Jared Fogle pleaded guilty to child sex and pornography charges, the restaurant chain saw its sales sputter. The years since have been an undoing of much of Subway’s rapid expansion. Nearly a quarter of the over 27,100 U.S. stores open at the time of DeLuca’s death are now closed.
So it wasn’t a huge surprise when in February, 15 months after its second cofounder, Peter Buck, passed away, the company officially said it’s for sale. According to reports, the price tag could be anywhere from $7 billion to over $10 billion.
New reporting by Forbes in light of that impending deal uncovers new details on just how much money Subway’s billionaire owners pocketed over the years, as well as the moves they’ve taken to both protect and minimize their wealth in the lead up to the sale. Through its ups and downs, one thing has remained constant: Subway has been paying out generously to its owners and their families for years.
This reporting-which is based on hundreds of pages of court documents, charitable filings, historical financial disclosures and interviews with experts and insiders-also pins down for the first time the fortune of DeLuca’s widow, Elisabeth DeLuca, 75, who debuted on the Forbes’ World’s Billionaires list in early April. DeLuca, who has one son, inherited her late husband’s 50% stake in the restaurant giant. With her family, she is estimated to be worth as much as $8 billion, after subtracting disclosed charitable gifts and calculating investment returns on the Subway royalties.

Isn't Subway a private company? If so, the owners don't have to share anything about their finances with the press.

The tragedy of the last 20 years is companies exploiting employees and management into taking less for more work while they seep profits into phony charities that take care of the vast tax burden of funneling so much money away from employees. You even see it with small businesses who give to the local baseball team or sponsor the yearbook; why can’t you sponsor the employee making your business thrive? Then we wonder why there are staffing issues.

I was a franchisee in Indianapolis between 1985 and 1993. I met Fred DeLuca, his wife and Peter Buck. Spent some time in his office talking to him. In those days I was 22 years old and I knew and understood more about the restaurant business than they seemed to know. Subway was a franchise selling operation posing as a restaurant chain. Nobody talks about the hidden money they made in those days from the equipment companies and vendors that were benefiting from their required purchases. When I had an idea that they later used, and probably received many millions of dollars from meat processors from kickback money by using it, I was told to worry about my restaurant and that they would never do what I suggested. They actually implemented it and did it before I sold my restaurants. The Director of Research and Development that I pitched the idea to directly, didn't even know the specific contents of the BMT sandwich. The flagship item of the menu. I never even received so much as a thank you for the idea. I am not bitter about this, I am only stating this because I was also fooled into thinking that they were a restaurant chain and actually cared about the food business. They were very good at keeping actual financial information from prospective franchise buyers and leading people to believe that all the store owners were very comfortable with the situation. I sold my franchises to existing owners and got out. That was an education I paid for. It had no real financial benefit to me except to keep me out of ever thinking of buying any franchise of any kind. Of course I have watched Subway expand to an incredible empire and generating billions of dollars, but I have never regretted getting out when I did. Their only concern was increasing sales by giving away food at the franchisees' expense. Discounting was out of control at one point so badly, that every day was a substantial loss, while they collected the 10 and a half percent from franchisees' bank accounts every week. Their philanthropy might be immense, but they certainly knew how to extract huge sums from franchisees who couldn't even afford to take a 4 day vacation after 3 years of running a Subway.

I sure wish Subway luck, it's a favorite of mine, lately though I've been paying $25 at Chipotle because of the amount served versus $13 for a sub that I must take home and add a good portion of veggies too.

I am skeptical of donating mass amounts of money to charities. I see stories where many charities pocket a good amount of donations and whatnot. For example, some members of the BLM movement were caught buying property with donations! I wonder with the amount of money being donated to charities, How come the world seems to be getting worse? LOL. Just a food for thought. Look at the mass amount of wealth Gates and Buffet donate and not much has changed. If I ever got to the point of being very wealthy and needed to donate, Id just star my own foundation and see where the money goes! I see many people doing that already and I would be on board to do that. I would feel more comfortable donating to a hospital than to a charity that says they "help underprivileged children" and every year they just buy backpacks and school supplies but gets millions of dollars in donations

It's all about jealousy for sure. We built this country on manufacturing and hard work. We have explored so much of the bedrock of our country and became lazy!! Anyone in this country can go from zero to a billionaire. My uncle went from zero to billionair. He had to file for bankruptcy 2x but never gave up.

Back when I left the US , any Greek owned pizza parlor would make a better “grinder “ than Subway’s cardboard taste subs with stale bread. Even Quizno’s claims , “it’s toasted “, well the Greeks toasted theirs a long ago. You are baking pizza pies , you have a hot oven , might as well toss the sandwich in it for a few minutes. No need to a sandwich toaster. So much for a marketing gimmick. Subway stores decor were bland even then. And they were in Brazil too, just as bad. Their stores came and went. Corporate owned or franchised , always either inferior bland food or overpriced. Most often the Greek ( at least in New England ) manning the counter and the oven would be the owner. So even if you you did not know how good or bad the location was , chances were you would get a decent bang for the buck. Franchises are a racket , pure and simple. Learn your trade through somebody else , pass the hat , and go about making it a business. No need to be a sharecropper for some corporate brand owner.
