Wonderful stuff. Thanks to its relatively slow growth, ease of care, and unique look, stores will pay decent money for your trimmings too.

I haven't tried selling any but I'm sure if you found the right LFS they would love to have it.

just found your channel after buying and planting my first set of Valisneria, before now I just had java fern which I've accidentally grown a fair amount of since buying the original plant a year ago. Channel is great, presentation style is great, videos are enjoyable to watch, liked and subscribed = )

Apparently it is Süßwassertang or Süsswassertang in the original German name and there isn't a 'b' sound. Somebody pointed it out to me on FB or I wouldn't have known either. It looks like a macro algae which is what a lot of seaweeds are as well.

I did actually know that but since it's more well known as it's American pronunciation and spelling I decided to let that go. It's always a balance of getting information out there that's helpful without going into more detail then the viewer wants. In addition to the "ss" sound and not the "b" it also should end with a "tong" sound instead of a "tang" sound so the full correct pronunciation would be susswassertong.

There are quite a few online retailers but I'd start with your local fish store. If you can't get it locally I know flip aquatics sells it.

Good info but just FWIW it’s not an unusual name, it’s just German - and in German, it’s pronounced suss, not sub. The German alphabet has a capital B looking thing which is a direct replacement for ss. So they’ll spell it SuBwassertang, but the B is pronounced ss. They actually dont even say “freshwater.” They say either saltwater or sweetwater. So its Suss = sweet Wasser= water Tang = seaweed 😊✌️👌👍

I did actually know all that but went with the American pronunciation since that's how most people pronounce and spell it.

That's not a "b". Sußwassertang. It's a double "s" so "susswassertang" is the way to spell it without the special character.

  • @IansFishRoom

You are absolutely correct...but...most people in the USA (my majority audience) don't know that and look for it spelled with a b. I could have gotten into that subject but it wasn't the purpose of the video.

@@IansFishRoom Yeah sorry, I am an American but know how German works. I just ran across this word as I've been researching aquarium plants. I haven't seen other German words with "ß" picked up this way, but that's language for you!
