The novel is actually called The Three Bodied Problem. In the novel, resources in the universe are finite, but new life forms and civilizations are constantly emerging, so the law of the dark forest applies: “Each civilization in the universe is like a hunter traversing through a dark forest with gun in hand. However, more advanced Cleanser civilizations exist, unbeknownst to humanity. One of these civilizations casually sent out a dual vector foil to humanity’s location and proceeded to reduced the entire solar system to two dimension. Humanity got flattened along with their prided Bunker cities and the planets, becoming a thin sheet of photo that’s forever history.

Basically, if FTL ships are used for evacuation, a small portion will be evacuated, much more are left behind to be eliminated by what other Alien civilizations will throw at them.
