Subnetting Made Simple
Here is a method that simplifies the process of subnetting. Hopefully it will help you understand what's really happening when networks are divided up and why subnet masks are important.
For some background information on binary counting and conversion, check out these videos:

After about 20 videos and countless hours, I found this...and it makes sense. This is by far the best/easiest example I've found! Thank you!

@@najashitv6460 usually you can find it if you have a slash notation, if it was say /25 the subnet mask would be 255.255.255.128 and /26 would be 255.255.255.192 and so on

I thought I was stupid as I was moving from video to video too! I realise now that it's just the way it's explained! What I find confusing us how is the subnet mask determined???

2.5 years working in IT and couple of Microsoft exams but this is the best way to subnet ever, no cheat sheets no nothing just pure logic, thank you!!!

But doesn't borrowing bits matter? I was hoping he would show us how to do that the simple way but nope lol

@@InfiniteTony for real, so confusing because the 2 in the 3rd segments in the Network adress only remains in the same casue it cancels each other out if you compare it in binary with the subnetmask. 00000010(IP segment) and if you compare it to 11111111(Subnetmasksegment) it remains 00000010(= 2). Terrible example in my opinion. The other parts were well explained tho.
9 years later I’m here being so thankful to this video ❤️❤️ I’ve watched like 30 videos explaining this topic but you’ve done it so well and so easily. Thank you so much I need this for my exam 💪💪✨
I'm in CompTIA Network+ class right now, and we just learned to do subnetting last night, and I can tell you that it took MUCH longer for the instructor to go over it than you just did, and it was MUCH more difficult, not to mention confusing. Thank you for sharing this extremely simple method!
"Easy Subnetting": 30+ minutes of theory and confusing analogies. Thank you so much for making this video, I finally understand it after weeks of struggling.
This is NEVER not confusing. Once the 0's and 1's come out, my brain shuts down and I immediately go to online CIDR conversion tools.
got a mid-term on wednesday and was just looking for some clear information. fantastic (praise the University of KZread!! :D)

Carl, I've been trying to figure out subnetting for longer than I'd like to admit. Your video finally made it click for me. I'm so glad you never relied on borrowing bits, just plainly laying out what the binary is telling us. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Carl, Your tutorial is THE ABSOLUTE BEST in this subject--confusing as it is. I'm studying for my CompTIA A+ and subnetting was the only thing keeping me from feeling confident I could pass the exam, let alone finish it! And you put this all together in just 5:40. Thank you so much, Carl! I especially loved the way you did the tutorial using a simple piece of paper and a pencil. It simulated what will actually be the case during an exam.

Unbelievable how simple you made subnetting. Like so many others have said, countless videos, hours, textbooks, methods, charts and nothing was a clear and concise as this. THANK YOU!! Terrific video.
Whenever I need to learn IP subnetting again I come back to this video, to this day this is the most simplistic and easiest way of understanding subnetting. Thank you Carl for sharing your knowledge.
13 years after completing my graduation have I understood this clearly here.

I've seen videos over 30 minutes long trying to explain this and I didn't understand any of them, however, ive learned more from your 5-minute video than I did from any other source, Thanks a bunch :)
Ten years later and still Amazing video, I really appreciate it. You already have a new subscriber from Chile
This is bar far the best subnetting video in my option. I’ve been using this video for the past year. Whenever I get a bit flustered and forget what I know I come here for a quick 2 minutes and everything comes back. Great work!
After 2 hours of rewatching the lecture and reading notes i came across this video and now everything makes sense

watched this video on my college years. watching it again for my interview assessment. God bless you
ive struggled all semester when it comes to questions about subnetting due to getting overwhelmed. Your clear and calm explanation helped in my breakthrough!
After watching several "subnet masking made easily" videos, I finally found this video: the first video that makes subnet masking easy! Thank you.

I interviewed for a Cyber Security Analyst 2 position last week, and they threw me this curve ball. I haven't messed with this in years and forgot much of Subnetting. Definitely going to imprint this in my head now.
This was made 5 years ago and it is the best video I've seen concerning sub-netting.
Carl, you absolute legend!! I have been searching the net for a decade for a simpler explanation of subnetting. Thank God I found this. Thank you🙏👍.
I watched so many videos and I have to say that your teaching method is short, sweet, simple and straight to the point.
You are an excellent teacher! Best and clearest explanation I have ever seen. Einstein said " if you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough."
Best explanation by far on KZread and I'm not even a native English speaker ;)
This taught me more than 6 hours worth of lectures and 6 hours worth of labs
I wasn't feeling very well this couple of days recently and I missed the lecture. I have a test coming next week and you've just royally saved my ass! Thank you, sir!
I've been struggling with this all day, and this is the first video to actually help me figure this out. Thank you so much!
10 whole years later, somehow this is the best explanation I've found. Thank you
I don't usually comment frequently, but I just HAVE TO! I have been searching for videos, reading notes mine and others, watching 3 different Doctors + 3 different TA's as I take it in 3 different subjects, AND YOU JUST made it as simple and easy as that, after HATING subnetting for the past 6 months, I'm actually starting to LIKE it and if possible close to LOVING it. For real, god bless you and your heart, and may your world be as easy as how you made subnetting for me and thousand of others just like me. I thank you for the deep deep of my heart.♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️!!!
I seen the 240p resolution, I already knew I was gonna ACTUALLY learn something
This explained subnetting in 5 minutes for what an hour long Coursera course made seem so confusing and complex....thank you.
I have been battling with subnetting for years. so many confusing video on the internet. Your explanation is well simplified and insightful. Thank you so much.
I can't even begin to explain how helpful this was. Thank you so much!
I won't say you went in depth but wow, with this video I can go back to my lecture and actually piece together everything, your video was the catalyst I needed.
Thank you dude! You thaught me in like 5 minutes what my teacher at school failed to teach me in about half a year!
Bro, after many videos, your 9year old video is the one that still shined.
Im taking a network technician course and CCNA is part of it. I have not been able to grasp this AT ALL until I saw this video. Now it at least makes sense (i suck at math so binary conversions are already difficult for me). Ive been getting 90's on my exams and am currently on chapt 7 lol. Thank you for this. Its the only video/demonstration that made sense and many people have tried to tutor me IRL and on youtube LOL
Best explanation, particularly with the part explaining the purpose of every bit to the left of the line vs to the right of the line.
Years ago when I was trying to learn about subnetting I watched countless videos. Then I came across this and all the bullshit everyone else couldnt explain finally made sense. This is the most elegant way to explain subnetting.
Never heard anyone explain it so simply before! Thank you
Thank you so much mate! It's so much better when it doesn't take 30 minutes to explain it like other videos.
how tf is this the best explanation I've seen?? This makes it look so simple. Just seeing the correlation between the binary values in subnet and IP made it click for me!
I have seen countless of these videos now. This is the best one
After wasting lots of time in waste videos....finally i found this. It realy help full
Whole semester confused finally got it. I wish there were more videos. Thank you.
Just one minute into your video and it's already making sense! Thank you!
this is the best way of explaining subnetting that i have seen, that made me snap it instantly all the hours of videos i watched before didn't help me at all. thank God i found this
You know the video is informative when it's in 240p
I am here after 10 years you made this video and finally, I have found something easy to learn. Still being helpful even for me and my Englis as my second language, challenging! thanks a lot.
This is the simplest explanation of subnetting. Thank you for making this video. Like other commentors, I've gone round the subnetting video circuit, head spinning from various explanations. This video is brief, to the point. Doesn't take lots of time. Subnetting makes sense now.
You're a genius!! Thanks. All the others take a whole freaking hour to show this and put you to sleep.
It's wonderful demonstration. I just got the idea of subneting wit this precise and clear lecture. Thank you!
10 years later and ur still a life saver! thank u thank u THANK UUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
the world really is run by people who can explain complicated things in a simple way
Thank you so much; a concept that I didn't understand for six months you taught in less than six minutes. I can finally take the Net+ exam.
so many years later and you still saving people my bruh
Quiz about this in an hour. You are a god-sent.
You took something inconceivable and turned it into something I could understand. You are my new hero!!
the best video Ive come across for subnetting. You make it so "for dummies" I actually understood this faster.
/26 means there are 26 1's and the rest of the 32 are 0. FINALLY, after hours of googling no one explained it that way. You saved my ass man thank you.
i watched 3 videos of +35 min of what you explained to me in 5 min!thanks
10 years later you're still helping people because i FINALLY GET IT NOW
The best clarification of subnetting I have ever seen thanks bro
Firstly i did not understand what you were doing, after doing the same thing on paper with a different subnet i found out how it works, i'm very happy with the knowledge it works on all subnet classes , thank you
10 years later and still extremely helpful
Saw a lot of videos with shortcuts, but what I really needed was the "HOW".. and this video explained it.
Working on my Networking+ and was struggling with subnetting. The simple way you explain it cleared the subject right-up for me! Something about the way others try to teach is convoluted and use methods that now seem overly complicated. My future career and I thank you.

This is a great video! Simple in its execution and very easy to learn. It has helped me tremendously today as I practice. Thanks Carl!
Thank you so much for this, I tried to wrap my head around this for so long but you made this so easy.
So simple yet many people explain it wrong, fantastic video
This is one of the best videos for showing an easy way to do subnetting by hand. Love the method.
2 years of learning subnetting and i knew nothing but after this video I understand all of it.
I have my midterm tomorrow. This helps a lot.
Finally! I've watched many subnetting videos and yours is the first one I actually understand lol. Thanks! I take my net+ in July.
I have been banging on this door for ages and you have kindly opened it a bit for me!! Thanks!
Please give the award to this guy. After wasting my 60 mins, I found this. I don't know why you got dislikes.
After 10 years, still very helpful! Bless you Carl!
Best explanation. Not even a trained cisco certifier can explain this so easily. God bless!
You're amazing! After spending more than 1 hour on YT and weeks at school... I finally understood it in about 5 minutes.
Wow, this is the best explanation. I was able to get it without replaying the video for a second time. Thanks a lot

Give him an award to make this kind of contents bro .. thanks alot you save my lot of time...
Thank you for this video. I watched many other but I still couldn't grasp how to complete the problems correctly. After going through this video step by step, I completely understand and feel confident in taking my exam.
The title did not disappoint. Legit this makes it so easy.
Wow 5:40mins of precious time and teaching.. It was really helpful and tricky rather than watching 20mins video nith hell confusions.. Thank you so much sir.. 2013-2020 ..
Finally, I found this. You don't know how happy I am right now.
Thanks for this video. I have been trying to understand subnetting and watching countless videos/courses but this video gave me the Ah-Ha moment I needed to feel like I have a grasp on the idea of subnetting.
Thank you friend, I just hated this topic whenever taught in the class but you made it simpler and easy.
My final exam is coming up this week! I am so happy I have found this explanation, thank you!
