    Ah yes, Thalassophobia simulator. Bought this game around Christmas because it was on sale, and boy was I in for a treat. On one hand the biology major in me adores the alien ecosystem, the various tidbits of xeno-science in game, and of course - crafting and base building. On the other hand - I can’t swim well, and know full well that a good 70% of the fauna wants to eat me, digest me, and excrete me as sea fertilizer for the nearest underwater flora whilst using me freshly made submarine as a chew toy. Totally worth the 35 hour experience though, even with the deep sea jumpscares.

    I actually had less of an issue with Below Zero (I suffer from thalassophobia) and am playing it at the moment without big of an issue. Subnautica on the other hand...I don't know what is is, but I could never get myself to finish that game.

    Little bit of context, the first Cinematic Trailer where the guy is narrating about it being months since seeing sunlight. In that one the first ship you see crash is the Degasi which went missing awhile before the game starts. The second ship at the end is the Aurora which is the ship the player was on. At the start of Subnautica, the planet is uninhabited. Below Zero which as they said takes place after the first, Alterra the big 'Company' of the universe has started researching the planet. Both are rather fun games the first the story is more bread crumb driven exploring and finding out what happened, while the second has a stronger narrative guiding you along.

    I've seen Mark and Jack play this over the years(mostly just out of context clips so I don't spoil myself), then I got the game myself. And it's probably one of the scariest games I've ever played. Not in the horror game jumpscare kind of way. But it preys on the idea of fear of the unknown. Where you're just drifting through the sea, minding your own business, and you hear a strange screech or growl in the distance. But by then it's already too late. Whatever you just heard has most likely already seen you.

    These games were probably some of my absolute favorite gaming experiences over the last 5-10 years. The original Subnautica is so amazing with a perfect atmosphere, sound design, visual aesthetic and beauty, and a great balance of excitement and fear to explore the dark unknown depths. It has a surprisingly deep (pun semi-intended) story with a bit of a critique on modern society, but you can completely ignore all that and just explore and build cool bases if that’s what you’d prefer! Below Zero is still a good game but it loses some of what made the original special. The story is a much larger part of the game, land exploration is a little clunky, and it’s generally small little less scary or nerve racking, but it’s still thoroughly enjoyable. Things in the game are definitely dangerous, but you’ll probably die way more to a lack of oxygen then being a tasty treat. Disclaimer: If you don’t enjoy grinding resources and crafting in a game, that’s a significant chunk of Subnautica. you can skirt a little bit of it if you build small, efficient bases, but even then you’re still going to be hunting down copper for what feels like half the game haha.

  • @DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames

    @DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames

    This game does such a fantastic job of building a sense of danger. I've seen grown men playing this game get startled and cry out in alarm when their submarine collides with a tiny fish, because they're so on edge and jumpy that basically anything is a jumpscare. And that awful feeling you get when the ocean floor just *drops* away from you into nothingness, or when you've been descending for what feels like an hour and there's literally nothing in sight but empty ocean, those are the moments that really make this game. Also every now and then a *giant friggin sea monster* will come along to make sure you remember why you were terrified.

You build so you can expand the area you can explore and you explore so you can build more and get new resources so you can make new things so you can keep exploring more places. I'm glad you guys took a moment to look at Subnautica after all the dark stuff you two have been covering recently. It's a truly atmospheric game that either is very soothing or terrifying. The second game doesn't compare to the first in my opinion mostly because the scariest monster is now known as "Smoochie" (the one at 13:04 ) in my house. I tend to talk while I play games and so my family gets to hear me chanting, "Go away Smoochie. No one likes your slobber kisses."

    subnautica is a great game i must say. and i dont say that a lot. if you guys play games you have to play this. its way more scary than appears trust me. its not horror but terror. the game does a great job to scare the crap out of you. also there is a los of sicological terror. like big monsters, creepy sounds, darkness and more that screws with you mind while playin. the first game in particular its a master piece. you will feel scary,happy,sad and all the other things while you play. its an open world, crafting game. where you must gather difrent minerals and plants to make stuff and also food and drink. you scan everything to gather information about the use of whatever you scanning or even info on the fauna and how to dodge it. the game isnt build to kill. i fact there are no weapons beside the knife .you can still kill stuff , and sometimes you must, to feed yourself but other than that the game dosnt reward you ( with stuff) for killing. you chose how to play your game. you can kill the predators or find ways around them. and sometimes when you see someting ... you run or you run before you see it ;)

    so, in the cinematic trailer, you get to see what happens to the degasei (please help my spelling lol). Bart thought he was the only survivor that made it (margarite survived). The Aurora was trying to find the crew that landed in 4546B but the alien gun G.U.N shot down the aurora. and you (the player) were the only one that survived. the Planet was under quarantine because of this alien bacteria called the Kharra. it is highly infectious, and you get it later in the game. in the end of the cinematic trailer, was The Aurora after it was shot down by the G.U.N. hope this helps. also sorry for my spelling!

    As someone who's not a great swimmer and firmly believes that if I was meant to be in the water I'd have fins and gills as part of my natural biology lol...these games are AMAZING. Excellent classic survival mechanics where you have to manage your food/water and air supply when diving around this DISGUSTINGLY beautiful alien ocean planet, and such an incredible sense of atmosphere and immersion. There are times when you're just swimming around gathering food and cataloguing wildlife when it feels so peaceful and serene, and there are other times when it legit feels like a horror game and the tension/desperation feels like you're about to explode. I'm also an ENORMOUS fan of games with a good deal of base-building available, and have spent a frankly embarrassing number of hours between these two games just gathering materials and constructing the underwater facilities of my dreams. I inevitably end up with a good sized base in every major zone because they're all just so awesome in their own ways and I love figuring out how to build around the environments and creating immersive installations to monitor the world around me and scan for valuable resources. The story of these games isn't a slouch either. Both of them are very "explore and discover" rather than quest-based breadcrumbing you through a linear line, though Below Zero definitely pushes the narrative a bit more aggressively than the first one. Both of them are games I just keep coming back to though. It's easy to get lost in this world. When you're brand new, the thrill of discovery is so exciting and terrifying at times...and when you know these zones really well, it's like going home. :) Love, love, LOVE these games. :D

    @@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames It's a VERY different overall tone than a lot of the other sorts of things that have been seen on the channel. It's also not as much of a pure action/adventure sort of game as most of the things I'll hop on here and rave about. Subnautica is all about the exploration and discovery, and the world you can just get lost in. Even though the graphics aren't the most photo-realistic of all games, it still feels real enough to make you get nervous when you find yourself in the wrong places and flat-out PANIC when everything goes awry lol.

    I'd highly suggest playing both games; grab them when they're on sale. With how they play, it's a generally 'here you figure it out' kinda thing. It'll give you the bare basics, and aside from a couple of early game events that could potentially be an issue if ignored long enough (the game won't let you forget about it lol), you're free to play virtually at your own pace. If you want story, you kind of have to dig for that yourself whilest gathering resources and exploring. Well, the second game is more in-your-face in that respect but it makes up for that with added survival complexity and the way they've arranged the environments. I will say the second game isn't as dark (literally) which is a shame because I really missed the 'I can't see a fucking thing in here' feeling when I knew I was pushing my luck in places.

    These games are great games. Below Zero is not quite as good as the first Subnautica, but it is enjoyable enough. But if you have not played Subnautica, and Subnautica Below Zero, do yourself a favor, and play through those games. It is a shame that the trailers spoils some of the encounters of the game, but even though that, it is worth playing. I have played through both those games several times now, on pc and consoles. Playing Subnautica on the pc is preferable, but it can be played on consoles as well. And not only have I played through the games myself, several times, I have also watched several youtube playthroughs of both games. And I will probably be watching a few more playthroughs. Not that I do not know the game inside out by now, it is just very fun watching other people play through the games, and reacting to things in the game.

    I first discovered this game by watching jacksepticeye, specifically his final release let's play (as he did a lot of beta stuff). And that's why he and Markiplier and IGP etc have all their quotes out there and are thanked in the credits of teh game, because the youtube let's plays actually saved the company (according to the devs), because people went out and bought the beta off Steam which gave them the capital to finish it (and then it became even more popular). but jacksepticeye's final release let's play is so wholesome, sometimes I watch through it when I'm depressed. That said, this game is amazing and beautiful. the first is kind of sandboxy, where it starts as just underwater survival and then gets more horrific the deeper you go (they play REALLY well off underwater visibility especially with lack of light as you go deeper and when it gets dark even at the surface you freak out). The main launch trailer, where the guy is talking about how "they should never have gone that deep", that's actually a voice recording you find from ten years prior to you (which is why at the end of that trailer the base is old and then you see the actual ship from the game crashing). So as you explore, it goes from survival to horror to mystery because you learn more and more, and then start to find...weird stuff. The second game caused a bit of divide because the main character (who is really cool) actually talks, and the story is more linear. It's kind of like a different type of game (still survival with some scary stuff, but more point a to b to c) in the same universe. People still liked it but a lot of people feel its not the same lightning in a bottle as the first. Still, highly recommend. Just maybe not at 3 am in the dark like one of the first times I went really deep down XD I had to close the game and walk away for a bit.
