Submersible implosion, how does it work?
We all have seen the news about the tragedy with the Titan submersible. The cause could be an implosion. But for many people it's not very clear what an implosion is and how this could happen. We hope to clarify that with this video.

Wow, great experiment and demonstruction. By the way, as the sub was in sea/salt water the density is between 2% and 3% more than fresh water's and this means the outside pressure at 3.8 km depth is between 387.6 (2%) and 391.4 (3%) Bar - add the 1 Bar atmospheric pressure above water and subtract the 1 Bar inside the sub and these numbers would be the pressure difference at that depth. Oh, the reason the water in the barrel was "still boiling" after the implosion, was not because it was still hot, but because the pressure had sunk so low that the boiling temperature according to physics theory of the new pressure/temperature/volume (PTV) was low enough. You may remember your physics teacher in secondary school demonstrating how to make water boil and freeze at the same time as illustration of PTV laws. At less than 1 Bar pressure difference, the speed at which the implosion happens is already very high and that would have been in the 1 millisecond ballpark down under in the sub. These people in the sub must already have been dead and completely fragmented before their brains could have made them even feel it.

Thank you, this video has got to be the simplest most straightforward explanation of an implosion i have seen so far!
Very informative and thought provoking about the implosion that happened on Titan. Thanks!
Man MasterMilo, a real youtube Legend!
We did this experiment with a one gallon can when I was in 8th grade science in the early ‘80’s. I have never forgot that lesson. I love seeing this again on your channel and also the one with the railroad tank car that implodes on another channel.
Well it’s a good explanation of a sad event. This guy here is a man’s man. It’s a nice thing to see a guy doing what he loves.
Best video on the topic yet Milo,great work!
At 8:55 if you go forward frame by frame using the '.' key, the barrel goes from perfect to completely imploded in a single frame. Incredible speed ! 😲

@2278kkkk
@gertebert

Ben benieuwd.
@SwiffMeister
@jeffmuntz2394
@2278kkkk
Super
nice and simple way of explaining implosion
Great explanation.. straight to the point
Great stuff guys...thanks for sharing

Goede uitleg! Nu kan iedereen het vatten lijkt me
The error was made by using Carbon Fibre for the cylinder, just the ends were Titanium alloy semi spheres. Carbon Fibre is very strong and lightweight but brittle and does not bend but break so would not compress even slightly under the pressure. Any Formula 1 team could have told them that. A larger demonstration there of the experiment done in a physics class at school. Can be done at home with a plastic bottle and some hot water.
@wouterveidhuis8653

Why would carbon fibre not be a good material for it? Very high specific strength. I believe it just was not tested properly
@dimi575
@@wouterveidhuis8653 Carbon fiber is very strong in tension (pulling it apart) but weak in compression (pushing it together). That is because these are fibers in a epoxy matrix. You can think about it like pulling on a rope vs pushing on a rope. If you make a pressure vessel with high pressure on the inside, carbon fiber is a very good material because the internal pressure will try to pull apart the carbon fiber, which is when it is at its strongest. When you have the pressure on the outside (like with a submersible) it will push the carbon fiber together which it is not able to withstand.
@matthevandenberg

@@dimi575well explained!
@rolf-smit
@@dimi575nice example of carbon fiber being used the "other way around": some pressure cylinders/tanks are made of carbon fiber reinforced materials. In scuba these cylinders are pretty rare (because divers need weight to get down), but firefighters use these often because of their light weight. These cylinders are usually filled to about 200 bar of pressure but higher numbers can be achieved. But carbon fiber cylinders are also used for hydrogen fuel tanks in hydrogen powered cars, sometimes up to 700 bar!
@IAmMaarten
@@wouterveidhuis8653 in addition to what other people already nicely explained, carbon fiber composites are strong for constant forces, but not amazing at dealing with repeated stress cycles. It's very stiff and brittle, and compared to steel they are more likely to develop cracks when deforming repeatedly than for example steel is. Note that the owner of the sub was specifically warned this was a safety risk of the design, because it was likely that 'invisible' damage (microfractures) would develop over time. The sub had already made several dives to similar depth last year, so it's not like the hull imploded the first time any pressure was applied.

A very impressive and explanatory video about the tragic accident of Titanic.......
Nice presentation ❤🇨🇦🌎
Top video man

It seems somewhat morbid to be watching an implosion, but this vid has to be one of the best demonstrations of what probably happened to the Titan on YT, except the actual failure event would presumably have been even faster and a lot more violent in that case.
Mooie content ❤
Een prachtige demonstratie.
supertof gedaan!
