Submarine 40mm Deck Gun: Not for Anti-Aircraft Defense!
Cod President Paul Farace and Cod Tour Guide Jo Bartelme demonstrate one of Cod's two 40mm heavy machine guns. These rapid-fire deck guns were excellent for surface targets and if mounted on surface ships could be considered anti-aircraft weapons. But submarines were instructed not to engage enemy airplanes. Their 160 rounds-per-minute firing rate not withstanding, they had to hit an aircraft to damage it. The plane only had to drop a bomb close to the sub to sink it. We hope to correct the misconception that these guns were for anti-aircraft defense. Our primitive sound system failed to capture Jo's answer to Paul's question which was “160.” We resolved these issues and you will be able to actually hear Jo in our upcoming videos.

We had a minor malfunction with Jo’s mic. Jo says “160!” But not to worry you’ll get to hear Jo properly in an upcoming video.

How do these guns specifically fair against the wear and tear of seawater and marine life buildup? Were they constantly cleaned?

I'd love to see a video about how deck guns were protected from seawater and corrosion, but able to be brought to firing status quickly when needed.

@PraxZimmerman The gun, sail, deck railing, and most of all, the bow, were all contributing factors that made WW2 submarines so painfully slow when submerged. They were actually much faster when surfaced! Defying the laws of hydrodynamics! In all fairness, they were designed to run on the surface as much as possible. It is the exact opposite for modern submarines. The deck gun crew probably cringed every time that the boat dived. They knew that the next time they saw that gun, they were either going to be firing it or cleaning it....
As a former Puddle Jumper with experience running an engine room with Fairbanks-Morse engines, you're intro was upsetting 😂

We did just that in 1995 aboard USS Pampanito on the set of the movie DOWN PERISCOPE. Jet skiers were harassing the sub during filming in the Richmond river until we cranked out their 40mm and trained it on them.
My dad was a 40mm gunner on USS Siversides (236) he loved that gun.

Interestingly, the mount does have the standard AA ring sights. On larger surface vessels, the 40mm mounts were typically controlled by off-mount directors.

@@paulfarace9595 Rush-Bagot is one of my favourite little double-layered fun facts as a Canadian-American with an interest in military history It’s a small number of people who know that Canada and the US have a Great Lakes disarmament treaty still in force and an even smaller number who know what its actual modern agreed meaning is
There's a dual 40 mount that visitors can crank around at the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola on their full size aircraft carrier flight deck display. Always popular! I would still like to make it back to Cleveland someday and go aboard the Cod again.
The US was not licensed to manufacture the Bofors during WWII. After the war the US was sued by the original designer and won. It was just such a great gun that nobody cared where it came from and just copied it for defense on many ships.
@RyanRansom

Not exactly. The us had a license to build them for US use but were sued by bofors after the war for manufacturing them and transferring them by lend lease to other belligerents. Bofors lost in the US court of appeals district that includes Washington DC.
Before watching: Shooting up supply sampans and barges. The Navy did the same mount on the aft of PT boats. After watching: The Kriegsmarine succeeded in turning submarines into heavy AA platforms and got all of them sunk.

The Allies anti submarine operations were getting a good grip of the U boats:- centimetres radar could detect the periscope above water, HF/DF could pick up their high speed radio transmissions, and asdic helped as well. Most U boats needed to surface after 12 to 20 hours and at their slow submerged speed, patrols didn’t need to be very widespread. Once the U boats had serious AA armament, a patrolling aircraft could call up DE/DD support. If the U boat dived, the aircraft could use depth charges, if not, then most surface ships could damage a U boat with gunnery…

Excellent video. It cleared up a misconception I had. Thanks.
Great video! I would never want to be on the receiving end of one of those guns😮
What I've read informs me that these weapons were selected by the captain of the sub, depending upon the mission, preference, and general feel of performance. Thanks again!

If attacked by an enemy plane American submarines dived. The only circumstance where they wouldn’t is if they were unable to dive. The USS gato is one of the only known American submarines to engage an enemy plane. One kamikaze attacked the USS devilfish and there was no time for the gun crew to man their guns.
