This game is actually held at the Texas state fair in Dallas. While you have 92,000 in the stadium watching the game, there are tens of thousands more fans that didn’t get a ticket and watch the game outside at the fair. Dallas is actually equally in the middle of these two schools about 2 hours north of Austin, Texas and 2 hours south of Norman, Oklahoma

The Red River Rivalry comes from the fact the the Red River separates Oklahoma from Texas. It is held every year in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas during the Texas State Fair. It is never in Austin, Texas or Norman, Oklahoma. Since it is considered a neutral site, even though it is in Texas, the tickets are split evenly between the two schools. That is very rare in college football. Normally in college football the home team sells to the visiting team the same number of tickets that the visiting team sells to them when they are the visiting team. That is all worked out in the contract for the game. Normally, it is around 5,000 tickets to the visiting team.

I'm glad you got to watch my team, the Sooners play in this great venue and the best rivalry in sports, in my opinion. You can't imagine the atmosphere and the tension when this game is played. It literally feels like a life-or-death situation for over three hours. For the entire week leading up to this year's game, all you heard is how Texas beat Oklahoma last year 49 to 0 and that Oklahoma had not played anyone good at all this year. Everyone in the media was picking the Longhorns to win. Last year was a disaster for OU after Lincoln Riley left and cherry-picked players to take to USC with him leaving the new coach, Brent Venables, with a big rebuilding task with both personnel and culture. Everyone was saying Oklahoma could not play as physical as Texas but watching that game, Texas has some talented players but OU was the far more physical team as illustrated in the magnificent goal line stand. I like my Sooners to win the Big 12 Championship this year and make the college football playoffs and anything can happen from there. We'll see.

All of the other big rivalry games (Ohio St-Michigan and Auburn-Alabama) alternate each year home and away. This game is unique because it's played at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, so a neutral site every year. The Army-Navy game is probably the next closest that you could find where the crowd is split 50-50, but the difference is that the crowd is split down the long way, not with one half of the field being Maroon or Orange like it is for this game. The Army-Navy game is usually super cold since the game typically takes place in December in Philadelphia, so most people are wearing jackets and its not as easy to tell team colors apart.

BOOOOOOMER! SOOOOOONER! This game means so much to both fanbases, alumni, and the respective states. It’s been played since 1900 and has been at the current location since 1932 at the historic Cotton Bowl in the middle of the State Fair of Texas in Dallas since it is halfway between both campuses. Both teams are also considered two of the best programs in College Football and the game has conference and national title implications which only adds to the atmosphere of a perfectly split crowd of Crimson and Cream (Oklahoma) and Burnt Orange (Texas) nervously watching each play. It’s one of the few neutral site games in college football and definitely the most unique. It’s also a fantastic game because both states hate each other and almost went to war over a toll bridge that ran across the Red River that forms the border between the states in the 1930s. Texans tend to view Oklahomans as poor, stupid, and low class where as Oklahomans view Texans as arrogant, stuck up, and all bark with no bite. So when this game happens every October, a lot of pride and emotions are on the line and for about 3 hours, all hell breaks loose as the rest of the nation sees two opposite forces battle it out for bragging rights for an entire year. If you truly want to experience college football at its most pure form, then this is the game for you my friends

The two teams rotate being the Home team, so looking at the score ribbon the "visiting" team is on the left and the "home" on the right as in "Oklahoma at Texas." Next year they switch. The Home team gets to have recruits at the game on their official visits, the visitors don't so next year Oklahoma will be the Home team and sponsor their recruits. Notice the different colors at the 50-yard line. North (left side on the broadcast) is Texas in their Burnt Orange, and the South side of the 50 is Oklahoma in Crimson & Cream.

Oklahoma are not just neighboring states, they share the longest state border in USA (540 miles). There are many connections between the two states and they actually had a small border war back in the early days of Oklahoma statehood. Disputes over the boundary has been a common thing for years. The supreme court made a decision to give what are now three counties that Texas claimed to Oklahoma. I knew people who owned land on the Red River and when the river would change course, they would fence in land that was previous claimed by Texans. The state line has been redefined several times and it impacts who has rights to water resources from the Red River and Lake Texhoma. All these things go into making this a great event.

To explain the penalty on the punt, it was the light version, called “running into the punter” which is 5 yards. There is also “roughing the punter” which iirc is 15 and an automatic first down. Of course if the rusher gets the block then there’s no penalty for hitting the punter

For Nick- A full game video of this one is at kzread.info/dash/bejne/goZ2paWAlru5mrA.html . Last year's 49-0 Texas shellacking of OU was largely due to Dillon Gabriel being in concussion protocol and having TWO! Five Star QBs transfer out before the season. I always root for my Oklahoman's in various spoorts when they're on TV. But yeah! Keep an eye out for next year, Daniel Akinkunmi at OU. He should be in the PS5 and Xbox games coming out soon too NCAA 24, he should be on the roster, but probably wont play until 25, but you never know, he could beat out everyone and be the starter, 1st string. So, this game is played every year in the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, Texas which is about half way between Norman, Oklahoma and Austin, Texas. My wife grew up in nearby Fort Worth, Texas and has been there a few times to see the annual Cotton Bowl game on New Year's Day (that game is now played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington where the Cowboys play). The stadium is actually on the grounds of the Texas State Fair and the game is held during the fair itself (on a separate note, find some time to read up on American county and state fairs; they're nuts). Those who can't get tickets to the game can still go to the fair and take in the attractions and watch the game on big screens around the fair. Not only is it a neutral site game are there an equal number of fans for each team, but the split is made right down the 50 yard line and you can actually see the colors shift from burnt orange to crimson in the middle of the 4 sections that split the 50. It's quite a site. This happens because neither the stadium nor the state fair even handle ticketing. Tickets for each half of the stadium are sold directly by each schools' athletic departments. As for Damo's question about other 50/50 split games, I don't know if there are any quite like this one. There have been and still are some neutral site rivalry games during the regular season and there are of course year-end bowl games. Ticketing for most, if not all, of those are handled much like a major soccer tournament game. Each team is allocated a section of tickets based on expected fan support. Then the stadium or organizer sells the rest to people who may or may not be fans so you'll have ends of the stadium with plenty of team support but there won't be that stark dividing line you have here. Current neutral site games that happen every year in D-1 FBS include Georgia/Florida in Jacksonville at the Jaguars stadium and the Army/Navy game which rotates around different NFL stadiums in the northeast. In the past the Iron Bowl between Auburn and Alabama was be held at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama but they moved it to rotating between the normal home stadiums full time starting in 2000. In search of the almighty dollar, you now see all of these other neutral site games popping up, especially in the opening few weeks of the year before the NFL season starts or after baseball season if a baseball stadium wants to get involved. That's why there's been a game in Dublin the past few years during Week 0. To answer Nick's question, it is an old rivalry that goes back over a century and state proximity and the fact that they've always played (and will continue to play) in the same conferences has fueled plenty of hatred over the years. The states do, in fact, border each other and most of the northern Texas / southern Oklahoma border is defined by the Red River; hence the name of the game.

Both OU and UT stadiums are about or slightly larger than the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. There are as many at the State Fair eating, drinking, and riding carnival style rides as there is within the stadium. They do not serve food and drinks at the stadium, you have to leave the stadium and get food and drinks at the concession stands in the Fair. UT and OU universities have been playing each other in football before Oklahoma became a state. So there is a rich history. During a bad season with more loses than wins, a winning coach of this rivalry game could still renew and extend his contract. This one win can save your job even if you lose all the other games. The City of Dallas and the State Fair organization pay both universities significant amounts of money to continue playing this game in Dallas. At the last renewal of the contract, the upper deck was encircled completely. On Friday nights high school teams from the Dallas School District use the Cotton Bowl. Although few high school games fill the lower bowl. Never-the-less, a 92,000 seating capacity virtually makes the Cotton Bowl the largest high school stadium without a regular home University team. Another Division 2 university rivalry plays in the Cotton Bowl a week earlier than this, Prairie View vs Grambling. Those are the only two university football games played in the Cotton Bowl that I am aware of.😊

There is roughing the kicker and running into the kicker.......Generally speaking, it's roughing if the punter's plant leg is contacted or if he collides with a rusher when both feet are on the ground. It's running into the kicker when the kicking leg is contacted, or if the rusher slides underneath the punter and "prevents him from returning both feet to the ground.".....If the a defensive player blocks or deflects the ball, they are allowed contact.

The game is held at the Texas state fair in Dallas, which is halfway between the two campuses, about 3 hours from each. The fair is going on during the game so in addition to the 96,000 in the stands, there is a couple hundred thousand more at the fair grounds. This game takes place exactly halfway between the two universities. This game was equally as tense and thrilling as the 2020 and 2021 Red River Shootout. Literally came down to the wire. I think for the past 8 years or so, this game was decided by 1 score.. Over the past 100 or so years, Texas has something like 63 wins to Oklahoma's 53.. A lot of Texas dominance in the series coming before WWII, while Oklahoma's dominance in the series has been in more modern times. There's also a huge Texas State Fair going on around the stadium that supposedly hundreds of thousands of non-game attendees go to during the game. This rivalry takes a backseat to no one, and is in my opinion the best rivalry in football today, and arguably in history.

Do yourselves a favor and watch Oklahoma’s last TD. Watch the offensive line. LT Walter Rouse blocked two defenders, one with each arm. It was absolutely beautiful. Incredible game. Absolutely love this rivalry. The river runs red again.
