From a retired Certified Black Man Teacher, I advise you to hang in there. You are 💯 PERCENT A TEACHER!!! I know it's hard, but hang in there. So many permanent teachers would not and could not be STRONG ENOUGH TO BE A Substitute Teacher and NO NOT JUST ANY TEACHER CAN DO IT!!!!

I am a “veteran sub, and I switched from being a real teacher to a Guest Teacher because I got tired of all of the extra work I did off the clock that I didn’t get paid for. Yes, it was a huge pay cut, but thankfully I don’t need a full-time salary to make ends meet. Once the kids got used to seeing me around the District, I really didn’t have an issue with discipline. But I had experience on my side, so that was also an advantage. My district just needs to pay subs more. And coming home and not having to grade papers…PRICELESS…💕🍎🍎💕

I worked for Scoot, its a good company and the rates they pay are above most. Espeically if you get a long term assignment somewhere. Although they may be rules for Subs, I was a TA, for them for two years so long term assignments might be for only TAs. Push for 200 a day. Also log your sick days , and don't forget to take your sick days. Go online and see how much you have it also will show on your paycheck. Also lead teaching should def pay 200 -280. do not allow them to pay you lower than 200 turn down the job.

I love how both of our first subbing assignment was a half day and today my 2nd teaching assignment was a long day (I was helping the Sped department). Funny how the special ed students were more well-behaved than the regular students. Yeah, subbing is hard students do not really respect their regular teacher. So we cannot expect them to respect a guest teacher haha. I learned you have to pick your own battles. When we are subbing, we are not going to be experts and the teacher will not want us to teach them anything new unless stated in their lesson plan. Review day or study hall period. You can tell them to be off their phone every 5 minutes or make sure to use classroom management such as proximity and remind them individually to be mindful of others such as by using headphones or keeping chat to a minimum so others who are learning and studying are not distracted. In my 2nd teaching assignment as a sped sub/ helper for other classrooms, the staff shortage was impacting the sped department where the sped teacher was unable to teach at all due to having IEP meetings and being an aide herself. I was so happy to provide that break and weigh some of the stress. If your agency or district asks if you want to sub for sped classes, I recommend it if you have the patience and understanding. They were a pleasure subbing and they always needed help.

Scoot was very good to me last year, most likely going back to them after this school year because I can't cope with full time teaching responsibilities because of my executive dysfunction. Too bad that the pay for subbing is just not enough alone to pay off CA's cost of living and thrive. Cool vid as always 👍

Great video! I would prefer to be a T.A. Sub because it seems easier to me, you don’t have to take control of a noisy class.

I subbed last year after taking a break from three years of teaching. It was great idea and I really enjoyed it. I am back lead teaching but I miss subbing. Unfortunately, the pay is bad where I live - max is only $100 per day - ugh!

I have been subbing since 2004 and it sucks!! I made a point of doing the job so well that the school didn't want to hire me as a teacher because they didn't want to lose me as a sub! (these were words straight out of the principal secretary's mouth) You are working because the teacher is off and you are dealing with their ill behaved class. Little pay, no benefits. I am sure this works well for some but it has taken it toll on me!

I have an upcoming info session with Scoot for their scholar pathway... may I ask: What was the application process like? How many references did you need, etc? We just moved to California from Washington and I'm looking to teach here. Thanks for any insight!

Hey! The application process was pretty straight forward, but it did take time. I mention this in the video, but I had to get fingerprints, get tested for TB, do an online training course (very simple). I included two references, but it’s unclear whether they contacted either! Hope this helps!

@@scribbledbysophie6589 Hey! Thanks so much for your quick response! I just finished watching the whole thing, very insightful! I noticed on scoot's website they say "3 references" but I wasn't sure if it was up to date, etc. Thanks so much for your help as I try to navigate this process!

@@mylittlegreenhaus Of course! I think if you put two references and then a third one that's a little more loosely connected to education, you'll be fine! If I remember correctly, my references were my old principal, my old co-teacher, and then a friend who wasn't a teacher and who I had never worked with directly haha.

@@scribbledbysophie6589 That's great info! I definitely have at least two that are connected to education and I'll probably ask one of my professors from my graduate program. (Just in case!) Great tips! Thank you SO much! BTW- I LOVE your channel! You have such a great presence!
