The Japanese maker's hero car is now a more grown up offering with an automatic transmission - but has it gone soft?

the brakes feel worse because brembos were optional for this trim. it wasnt meant to be faster than the manual, its targeted more towards the mature market, for those who want a sports car and want to live easily for city drives.

great car, poor review. dropping the trans into manual mode makes for very controllable shifts at the desired revs and prompt auto-blipping downshifts. the reviewer should be using the paddles in sports sharp mode for performance and lose the attitude. basic mods to the car can deliver more torque than the stock manual and a beefier exhaust note. the car is naturally harder to slow than the manual as there's no engine braking. this car can launch 0-100kph in 4.09sec with a tune and new exhaust.

Because of the 'well rounded' Americans, Someone hasn't done his research, this model STI never came in as an Auto in the US, not even did the Golf R with arguably one of the best DSG systems around made it in Auto form to the US.

I own the JDM model A line, Im very impressed with low end torque , I had the UK manual and hardly anything. If anything the auto pulls harder. This is the GRB model. Or hatchback.

Wait wait wait, how is this the fault of Americans we didn't even get the automatic STI, we still push manual STIs all day. Get your facts straight

Yeah...go ahead and blame the "Well rounded" Americans for the crappy transmission...The only problem with the presenter's ignorant assumption is that Subaru doesn't sell an auto for the STI or WRX in America...I guess they thought it made more sense for the Aussie market.

This jackass should do some research and fact checking before he does a review. He says because us "well rounded" Americans want automatics is why Subaru put them in the STi. Well guess what... there has NEVER been an automatic option for the STi here in the US! That is not for us. And someone with "man boobs" shouldn't call anyone "well rounded"... you know, glass houses and such.

I want to get this car so bad but I am willing to wait and keep driving my Honda accord sport until Subaru fixes whatever problems the daily driver has with this car as far as performance because I have made the mistake of buying a car and later on three months into purchasing my car and upgraded version was released

1troyman1 Me actually. I have an 04 wrx. The 4EAT is actually great. I can drive stick perfect, I chose it because it was the only one I could find in my area for the price. Also, a true subaru, or WRX fan, would not hate on an automatic driver.

Danny Cervone You must not really love WRXs that much otherwise you would've looked harder or waited longer to get a proper manual WRX. An auto version is such a compromised experience.

RexSpec06 I must not love WRX's that much because I bought an auto. Lol, that was the most illogical reasoning ever. I love WRX's as much as the next guy that drives one in stick..

  • @RedPanda555

Danny Cervone Actually, it's pretty logical reasoning. The WRX is a driver's car, yet an auto transmission takes away a key part of driver involvement - changing your own gears. Basically an auto WRX means you have a driver's car that is less fun, weighs more and is slower than the proper manual version. And on top of that, it also costs you more money. As someone who likes performance cars, where's the logic in that?
