    A note on acceleration: the faster you floor the throttle pedal, the longer it takes Subie Turbo to recognize what you're asking for. Rolling the throttle pedal rather than a rapid "slam" will bring about much quicker response. This is true for turbo Foresters as well.

    I use hand controls to drive, so I have to get someone else to test drive cars for me with me as passenger. My ex test drove a CVT Sube Levorg a couple years ago and it FELT right to me to accelerate as you describe. However trying to tell that to a (/this particular) man, was an exercise in frustration and futility 🙄🙄🙄

    I tow a 3,000 lbs box trailer with a base model Outback. It tows fine. I find a lot of the KZread videos I’ve watched on this topic aren’t people familiar with towing techniques. Weight distribution and brakes are 80% of towing. If you have side to side motion or a jerky ride, a lot of that is the weight in the trailer not being in it ideal locations.

    Also, I use manual shifting. Relying on full auto CVT drives me crazy when towing. That can help keep your RPMs down a bit.

    There’s just way more to will it tow, then what has been put on a video. I tow with a non-turbo and it works just fine. You really aren’t supposed to floor it to get up to speed when towing. Just allow for extra time going places. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

    Thanks for this. I just bought the 2022 Wilderness specifically because I also bought a 2018 NuCamp T@B teardrop (1700 lbs). I got a brake controller as well, and even though I’m a complete novice trailer pulling driver it all made a lot of sense and worked and I had no concerns in my couple of trial runs with the rig. The trailer is put away fro the winter and I’m now looking forward to snow storms to enjoy the Subaru’s amazing traction (I installed Nokian winter rated tires). Our plans are for weekends in my region so I don’t think we’ll bother with upgraded suspension, etc, and will just try to load the trailer correctly for optimal weight distribution.

    That tow extension is adding leverage on trailer tracking (much like a breaker bar) which could amplify stability issues.

  • @rik999

    @rik999

    Agree that extension bar trades convenience for stability and more rear squat. The extension bar moves the articulation point of the rig away from the rear axle of the tow car. Having the articulation point over the rear axle is why gooseneck trailers are so stable. I also wonder whether that rig has enough tongue weight before that extension causes the rear of the car to bottom out.

    It’s not just the weight of the trailer… The tongue weight will influence the ride quality of the tow vehicle. Too light and it will sway all over the place. Too heavy and it will squat the back end, thus raising the front end of tow vehicle. I am waiting patiently for my CampInn Ultra 560 to be delivered in about a month. I will be towing it with a 2016 Subaru Outback. I’ve done my homework on this.

    I too have a 16 OB. The high tow rating matched with such a low tongue weight is a real bummer. I'm not sure where the weak point actually lies. With the body or the suspension. I've been tossing around the idea of a mild lift with stiffer rear springs but if the unibody is the failure point that won't help too much. 300-400 pounds tongue would be much more usable IMO.

    I have pulled trailers with several unitized (monocoque) body cars and trucks. They were my 1975 Chevrolet Monza 2+2 v8 4 speed, 1978 Monza Spyder V8 automatic, 1988 Comanche Pioneer long box 4x4 4.0L 5 speed manual and now my 2015 Promaster City wagon. None of them had altered suspensions. Except for the Jeep, all towed trailers were in the 1400 to 2000 pound range. I had no issues with either sway or soft rear end bounce or sway. The Promaster city which I currently own, has towed everything quite effortlessly and easily. (All it’s loads so far under 2000 pounds so far.) The Comanche towed with no issues until I started towing weights above around 3500 pounds. Above that weight I needed to use sway controller and equalizer bars. I had a Terry travel trailer which scaled out at a total of 4760 pounds loaded. (I put it on a scale and weighed it.) the Jeep was not happy with that trailer. Turned out the equalizer set up was totally wrong and it swayed terribly beginning about 45 or 50 mph. When I scaled the truck, the weight distribution was horrible. When set up the way you “supposed to do it”, ie, front and rear of the truck roughly equal ride hight, the tongue weight of 650 pounds was transferred entirely to the front axle along with almost 350 pounds off rear axle weight. To say it did not tow properly was a bit under stated. I spent a weekend learning about the hitch configuration and how to adjust it and also how to “tune” it to properly work with the Comanche. (Turns out you could adjust the ‘pitch’ of the hitch ball and equalizer bars to match the trailer and truck along with the ball height). I was then able to redistribute the tongue weight evenly between the truck front and rear axles and also send some of the tongue weight back onto the trailer axles. So, I ended up with a total close to a 45-55 front rear axle weight distribution on the truck and a 550 pound tongue weight. After that it towed quite nicely and with a much more comfortable ride and substantially improved braking. However, it had a notable rear squat but the trailer was balanced and evenly leveled out so it’s tandem axle suspension would work ideally. and a lot of people told me I did not have my hitch set up right. But it was the proper configuration for that truck

    I actually own this car now, so I wrote a different critique of the critique. The dance between the CVT Tuning (which I think is optimized for the non Wilderness final drive gear), and the Turbo take some getting used to. But when you are used to how the car responds to the controls, your inputs become more intuitive. It is a bit different between the CVT tuning and the Turbo engagement, and if you drive it like a Toyota Corolla it's not going to do what you want it to. I also find myself predicting needs and using paddle shifters to anticipate the gear I want, rather than expecting the car to figure it out, when Im in the mood to be zippy, or if I am towing a trailer. It is very capable, but does require a bit of input from the owner that becomes automatic over time. The good news is that the power and response are there when you need it to be. I've hauled a lot of weight in the back, like sandbags during a flooding storm in San Diego last year. I made 4 trips with the back full of sand bags, and I picked them up ON THE BEACH IN THE SAND. I found that although it sits lower than it does empty, it doesn't sag too low. It goes down a few inches and then it gets more resistant, just like it should. I didn't find the springs to be soft. I found that they had a longer articulation than the last Outback I had that was not a Wilderness Edition. So it's not just HIGHER, it also has MORE MOVEMENT. It handled the weight well, and I wouldn't expect a shock./spring combination that is softroad ready to handle like a slot car or a dedicated truck when towing a trailer. Considering what it is, it does great from a handling point. It's capable, but I wouldn't want to do a slolom on it, or Rally Race,. I am towing a trailer, on a high suspension vehicle so I slow down. ANd I was very pleased with my few relatively short experiences towing a 4X8 box trailer full of wheels and tires and some lumber. And one time a heavy car trailer, but without the car on it. I wouldn't give up that articulation for a smoother tow because I didn't buy this to tow. It's nice that you can throw a little camping trailer on it tho. Especially a little bean with great clearance. I dunno why I need it to "handle" on the highway. I just need it to be safe, and drive it with consideration. Part of that consideration is to use the proper length hitch which is NOT an extended hitch. The tailgate opens up with little need for clearance behind it. I think you will find the Outback Wilderness (well only if you gave it a fair test that made sense) would handle GREAT towing that trailer on a fire road to a remote Camp Site. And that is what WIlderness folks do. Your test wasn't really fair since you had a very poor choice of hitch there. There is no need for an extended hitch, unless you want to magnify that wag the dog feel and put additional strain on your hitch mount. Maybe try it without the extension. The little beans are designed to be right behind the tow vehicles, not dragged behind them by several feet. It's fine but un-necessary, and if you want to be anal about handling, use the right hitch. The hatch has PLENTY of room to open even if you back up to within a foot of a brick wall. You have FEET TO SPARE THERE, so your reasoning about using an extended hitch, which completely modifies the handling and feel, is not sound. Databyter

I can't imagine any of them would be incredibly comfortable towing. I've always sort of figured that the tow ratings on small SUVs like these were as a just in case you needed to haul a small utility trailer to the dump or something like that. Certainly not for constant towing. That said, I do see a good number of smaller and mid-size SUVs towing small boats or jet skis around here.

    For the earlier generations yes, but not the current one. The current gen unibody is significantly stronger and quite capable for WD to the 3,500 tow limit. WD is just plain safer and more comfortable. Even cars like the BMW X5 are unibody and tow 5,000 pounds on professionally installed WD hitches. Trailer you mentioned is around 2000lbs, but what is the hitch weight? Maybe that is why there is a lot of sag. Also, when the trailer is heavier in the back, you tend to get the tail waggle. Also wondering if you guys have access to the Rovelite trailers which start at 1600lbs dry and get up to 2500lbs gross. Wonder how they would trail behind an outback. Lots of folks feel they don't need to bother with trailer brakes, even if over 1,000 pounds - in whatever the vehicle. Foolish, they should IMO. Easy to set up at your local trailer shop. There is a 4-pin OEM harness plug ready in the Outback rear cargo area to start with. Curt or Enthuze make a great hitch for Outback. If you want to monitor any temperatures, these are easy with an OBD2 bluetooth device. The OBDLink LX works well with the ActiveOBD app. That app is built nicely for Subaru systems and will display: digital coolant, oil and CVT temps all on any Android device with Bluetooth. Most apps won't display CVT temp here. (The current Outbacks do offer to display a digital engine temp, if selected.) I have found that the engine oil tracks about 8 degrees warmer than the coolant. And CVT temp never gets close to them. The Outback uses a CVT oil intercooler with the coolant. Far superior to radiator type secondary coolers that rely on ambient air temp to provide any cooling effort. CVT over temp is what is harmful as it destroys the fluid. Anyone who wants to operate their CVT - or any vehicle - for the long haul should be aware of these temps while towing or hard driving. Knowledge is power. Check elsewhere on the web and do some research on this. Well worth it in the long run, whatever you drive.

    I am leery of towing anything with a vehicle that has a CVT. We love my wife's Subaru Forester for city driving and light traveling in good weather, but for towing and long trips my Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk is our vehicle of choice. The larger and more powerful V6 and 8 speed transmission plus the heavier weight of the vehicle make towing with the Jeep a better and more pleasant experience. Towing a similar sized and weight trailer with the Jeep is not even noticeable. My trailer with a 350 lb hitch weight, only drops my rear by 1". My biggest complaint with the 2015 Forester is that in very windy rains it does not feel secure on the road. Gusty side winds tend to push it around too much. I have never tried to tow with the Forester and do not have hitch installed on it. The Jeep does have the tow package, which results in slightly lower fuel economy. We average combined 29 mpg on the Subaru, 24 mpg in the Jeep.

    @@danieljackson-woods6225 the wife doesn’t complain. My daily is an Ecoboost F150 so when I do drive her car a part of me dies inside.

    @@MrJamesLuz I have a lifted 2018 trek with ko2s and have no issues towing an offroad trailer or offroading with it and the evc helps that significantly

    If you know anything about towing trailers you would add some tongue weight and the lateral movement goes away. I have towed 2500 lbs with my Outback with the trailer set properly and had none of the issues you described
