Subaru's at Gorman, CA - Hungry valley SRVA on weekend of 10-28-17

The week after my first SubieFest in Pasadena, I met the MtnRoo Brotherhood. Great group of people. They were hosting a Subie meet out in Gorman, CA at the Hungry Valley recreational vehicle area the following week.

Stumbled upon this. How did you guys (if at all) get down the rock face on Pronghorn Trail? I did it once in a Tacoma and white knuckled it and now I have a Crosstrek that I want to take to Hungry Valley soon. 😂

In this video we all turned around, because we didn’t want to risk body damage. I have more recent videos out. We went down pronghorn in a Honda Passport, Mitsubishi Outlander GT and a 4runner. In the most recent video some 4WDs drove “UP”.

You guys made that look easy! Subaru’s never cease to impress. I have a 16 Forester , would love to do this. These videos will bring out the cvt haters I’m sure. Nice job

This was actually my first time at a SVRA and where I learned more what the Subaru was capable of. Such a good memory! Check out my latest Joshua tree video of the level 4-5 Jeep trail (I have two video's, one old and one new with a bigger group). That trail will push a stock Subaru to it's limits.

Does anyone know why when I turn my steering wheel too much to one side my Subaru feels like braking or dragging something, it feels coming from the rear wheels, so far I have changed the differential fluid and rear and front CV axles.

Alexandro, that's a good question. Honestly, I think the best way to get an answer is to join the MtnRoo facebook group and ask your question there. There's many knowledgeable people that can quickly respond to you (much faster than a forum post). You'll have to apply to the group before you can join, so make sure you answer the questions thoroughly, or they won't accept you. facebook.com/groups/MtnRoo/

AWDfreak ugh! What part of Hungry Valley did you get stuck at? We were there just last weekend. I camped out two nights. We spent time at the obstacle park. We also drove this deep sandy trail, it was my first time and it was quite fun. There were 6 different Subaru’s that went, and I plan to showcase the other drivers and their modified Subaru’s.

JonDZ Adventuring - I got stuck on the uphill here at 34.722057,-118.864930 in my 5MT Subaru XV Crosstrek. I really wish I had the Lineartronic CVT that day. But I still stick (no pun intended) by my choice to drive a manual transmission Subaru crossover for the fun that can be had at higher speeds.

I had to look up the coords on my computer. Getting up the hill will take some momentum in a Subaru. If I go half way up, stop, and then try to get to the top, I'll lose traction and bog down in my turbo Forester. Crosstreks are definitely a super fun momentum car. They're so nimble I can't keep up with one on a twisty gravel road.

JonDZ Adventuring - Yeah, my biggest mistake was going up too slow. As soon as it bogged down and I figured I'd have to practically destroy all the clutch lining to drive up to the top, I tried reversing, but the car kept wanting to go downhill in reverse sideways, risking a rollover. I was embarassed I had to get recovered, but I figured better that than a wrecked Subaru XV Crosstrek from a rollover with a long-ass expensive ride home to the Silicon Valley. And I am VERY aware how fun this car is as a momentum car. If you're curious enough, just look up my video titled something like "130 WB part 2/3, highlighted section". Not only is my crossover's full potential used off-road, it's full potential on pavement is used as well.

Thanks Joeseph! Yes, I had to say that I’m fairly happy with the geo landers, although I was pretty impressed at how the stock Duelers performed as well. The main reasons I chose the Geolandar G015’s is because they are mountain snow flake rated, they’re quiet, and not super duper aggressive so they won’t affect fuel economy too much. I also downsized my wheel from 18 to 17 inch to open up more tire options (bought 5 Subaru BRZ rims on Craigslist for $300) and then I bought the GO15’s in a size that is 3/4” taller diameter. I run them at 38psi (37 rear) and show unnoticeable MPG change. I drove up to Yosemite from the LA area (an uphill drive) driving 80-85mph for 364 miles and finished my trip at 24mpg average. Not bad for a turbo Forester loaded with gear and my girlfriend. With all that said. If you aren’t concerned about a change in fuel economy, I think dynapros and KO2’s are more aggressive and will probably make for more capable trail tires. Sorry for the long winded answer, and I want to make sure I answer you. So “Yes” like my G015’s, I think they are the right tire for my needs.

No apologies for that answer. That is actually the type of information I need. We don't have to deal with snow too much in the Southeast US, but some additional traction in off-road scenarios would be fantastic. If I can get it with similar fuel economy and without rubbing the wheel wells too much, even better. I'm also considering dropping to a 17" wheel with a five tire rotation if I can sort the details out with the TPMS and tools needed to reset. If you are on subaruforester.org I may try to look you up there. I know a lot of people share their updates and plans there. Just getting started, but already have a few ideas I'm working through.

Joseph, Yes, I am on subaruforester.org also as "JonDeeZee". I'm also on the MtnRoo facebook page. It's such a great community. Not only well mannered and friendly, but you can ask an extremely technical question and it's guaranteed someone will respond. I tried doing the 5 tire rotation but I found it too much of a hassle. It sounds like you have the right idea about getting a programmer, I'm all for functional TPMS sensors! last week my tire light popped up while I was driving a short distance to work. Once I got the chance to inspect the tire I ended up finding a nail. TPMS sensors are awesome! long distance highway driving at higher speeds with an under inflated tire is a recipe for disaster. Good luck in finding the right A/T tires for you! Just keep the width near stock (225) and your MPG's shouldn't drop too much. I can vouch that the GO15's lose less than a MPG when ran at 37psi with no rubbing (over 1/4" clearance at the spring perch).

Oooooh! I forgot to mention! NO ONE has ever recognized my Geolandar GO15's as an A/T tire. They do not look aggressive enough :P I always get "You should upgrade to some A/T's then you'll be set" or "Ah, I see you're running all seasons". I guess I don't really care, but it does make me wonder if a tire like the Dynapro ATM might have better offroad traction.

I'll look out for you on there then. I have a post on subaruforester.org about the TPMS and five tire rotation so we will see if I get any hits. I'm definitely struggling with wanting a more rugged looking tire, but not wanting them to rub or impact the odometer very much. If it looks like I will be keeping this for the long haul (probably will be unless a later gen Forester wins me over) I'll maybe try out one of the more aggressive tires and sacrifice the odometer reading. In the end I'm more about function than form so it's good to have those as a confirmed option for now. Thanks again for the great videos and all the information you've offered.

ADVBandit thanks for the Sub!! Hungry Valley SVRA in Gorman is a gigantic playground. It’s also a great place to camp for only $10. We had many stock Subaru’s in this video and they did just fine. Towards the end of the video, my friend Luis in his completely stock SJ went up the right side of the obstacle hill. His path was a bit rutted too!

PandaTrek well, to make a short story long, it all started when I sold the primitive skid plate off my WRX to a guy from the MtnRoo brotherhood. He told me about his group and to hang out sometime. I joined their Facebook group back a couple months ago because I wanted to ask for advice, but I also noticed they do a lot of trail runs and camping (stuff my girlfriend and I do all the time by ourselves). So to answer your question in a long winded manner, you’ll hear about events all the time through their Facebook page. Their next event is next weekend in Death Valley. I believe it’s a volunteer event where they do the typical trail riding and camping, but also help plant trees and clear out illegal off-road tracks.
