This is a a Motormouth couple car review of the Subaru Outback Wilderness trim. The most rugged and capable Outback ever, the Wilderness! It comes with a 2.4L turbocharged Boxer engine matched with a CVT, 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. Standard AWD. The Wilderness has copper accents throughout the exterior and interior. You’ll notice a black matt finish on the hood; it’s there to reduce the glare when driving. It comes standard with LED headlights and taillights, 17” black matte wheels and Yokohama Geolandar all-terrain tires plus a full-size spare tire. Subaru also updated the roof rails with a traditional set of cross bars which will support more weight, up to 700 pounds when the car is parked which means the Wilderness can support a roof tent. The rails will support up to 220 pounds while driving. It offers 9.5 inches of ground clearance where as other Outback models have 8.7 inches. The Wilderness can tow 3500 pounds. Our test model in Ice Silver Metallic handles well, the tires are quiet and the drive is very comfortable whether you are off-road or driving in the city. It comes with standard AWD and EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. The interior is made up of all weather soft touch upholstery with a geometric pattern, Wilderness logoed rubber floor mats and copper accents and stitching. Standard features on the Wilderness include, a 11.6” touchscreen, a 4.2” multi-information display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, power driver’s seat and manual passenger seat, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a power tailgate and sunroof. The Outback offers plenty of second row legroom to stretch out and as you can see in the pictures, the cargo space behind the second row is quite large for our carry on bag and a cooler.
At Canada Drives you can buy your car 100% online and have it delivered straight to your doorstep. Once delivered, you have a full 7 days to love it or return it.

Great review! I have already seen several on Quebec roads. They are perfect for our climate, and bad roads. My only negative point is, Subaru does not offer the 12 speaker Harmon Kardon sound system like in the other upscale Outback models.

We have a green wilderness on order. It'll be December before it comes in. We love how beefy it is. It's a great middle ground of size, function, and gas mileage. My husband is trading in his 2005 Tacoma Prerunner RWD. He wanted better gas mileage but not as small as my C-HR. The Subaru Wilderness is a great vehicle. Can't wait until it comes in.

I owned the same Tacoma. Gas pig! Lol. How's the wilderness so far? Getting good mileage?
The Wilderness trim is a real marketing genius. As there are aplenty of Subaru Outback and Crosstrek decked up their rides with aftermarket off-road gears in PNW. Outback owners are fiercely loyal to their utilitarian ride. The more efficient 2.4T and Wilderness will only make them even more loyal. While attracting those potential Forester buyers, who find it underpowered.

it is 99% marketing with a small amount of added off-road capability. It is really light off-road capable, not much difference than the outback xt.

@@sl5932 It's pretty capable, is it as good as my wrangler was? No, not even close. Is it as good as 4 runner? No, not really, approach and departure aren't great. Will it get you significantly further than any other CUV you can buy? (with the exception of JCTH) Yeah, and it'll do it more comfortably, safer, and use less fuel.
Have a 2019 OBX and have enjoyed it. Absolute smooth and quiet ride and trunk space a plus for me.
Nice thing too about the affordability of the outback is that it doesn’t need premium gas for the 2.4 turbo

I have a 2018 Outback limited edition and it has been brilliant for me..goes anywhere I need it to and zero issues..the new Wilderness definitely is an upgrade but I really don’t need a new one…mine works for me just fine…whoever buys a Wilderness edition it’s a dam nice Car for most all but the higher end off-road adventures…enjoy it!

Agreed! I haven't had any major issues with my 2016 OB 3.6R it has been very capable in many conditions. It is a smooth cruiser on the highway but take it off road and it has zero issues handing steep gravel inclines or light water crossings. I do like the 2020+ models for the 3500lbs tow rating though.
Very nice vehicle! A perfect car, practical car and it can go offroad and on-road. Better ground clearance than a legacy station wagon. 👍👌🏼

Great review! The Wilderness really caught my attention; love the look, and it inspired a trip to my local dealer. After discussing my driving habits, the rep steered me towards the Ascent. Two days later, I decided to buy the Ascent. We road trip from Toronto to Halifax and Toronto to Orlando. Rightly so, the rep said the Wilderness is best enjoyed by people who spend time on country roads. The Wilderness remains a car I like and I totally love my Ascent; perfect choice for family road trips with two teenagers.

Love Subaru practicality.....the Wilderness trim stands out and fits the brand to a tee. Even better looking for me at least is the Wilderness trim on the Forester. It was nice seeing fall color in your review...in Florida we just get a shift on the green/brown spectrum. We get no snow but lots of rain and mud ....and we have alligators.

Great Review!
My parents (who live on Lake Muskoka). both only drive Subarus (Forester XT Turbo and a Legacy). They will not drive anything else regularly (save their GMC 1/2 ton - dump/boat/wood). They absolutely love the brand and their customer service. I like them, quite a lot, but I’m not the biggest Subaru fan. I find them to be somewhat noisier, ‘tinnier’ and less reliable than it’s competitors. But style-wise...I don’t feel it (specifically the Outback) has any competition.... which is quite rare these days. Well done them. Thanks for the video.
Didn’t consider this until now. Thanks Zach and Andrea
i saw my first one on the road last week, it was silver, it looked great!!
Looks like something in my toolbox. I like it.
I have a '14 Crosstrek. I really really like this Outback Wilderness. Now with 2 kids I'm considering something bigger and more powerful. The only thing that concerns me about this is the 22/26 MPG. I wish it was at least 24/28.
I want one. that's an awesome car

It reminds me of the 1992 Toyota Corolla business wagon with the low spec economy car appearance. But I like the idea and I think the exterior would grow on me in the long term. Would option in the mud flaps and weather shields also.
We just got our '22 Outback and it's a big step up from our previous Forester. Much more refined, quiet and gobs of tech. Too much piano black, but what's new? Plugging in for Apple Carplay, why bother using the wireless charging slot? We most miss all the console storage we had in the Forester as well as the extra storage under the trunk cover. What we like best is it's a wagon, not an suv shape. Lots of visibility but better styling. (Premier model. Wilderness looks like they gave a black sticker pack to an 8 year old and said to go to it.) It's lower height makes carrying canoes easy.
Most interesting review. You two did a great job of not making it boring. Thank you. I was wondering if you noticed the under carriage whether or not when they put in skid plates they secured the catalytic converter from being stolen? Here in Southern California, in my city, they have a theft of one practically every day. Because of its heath I’m afraid it would be a target.
Looking to buy a Subaru myself and I'm glad this model came out but it's a little pricey for me I may try leasing it and if I like it buy it thanks for the review much appreciated

Oh hey! 2023 Outback is available to order in Canada - it’s up on the Subaru website. Full-circle heated steering wheel is available but maybe just on higher trims don’t know. We get the Onyx edition as well as the Wilderness now.
They didn’t get rid of the outdoor (Outback Onyx Edition XT), they just stopped importing it to Canada. It’s still here as a 2022 model In the U.S.
That is one sexy car. While I would love the Wilderness Edition I would be much more likely to get the base model. I only need it for snow and gravel/dirt roads. I almost get by with a Mazda 3. Yesterday I was worried about bottoming out on a few potholes.
Jeep Trailhawk has a ZF 9 trans, low range, and rear locker. Hard to beat for the money.
Yep, as a large dog owner I love this car! I reached out to Zack on one of his live show for suggestion & glad I chose the Outback…thank you! The headlights are awesome, the interior is very comfortable..eyesight system does a good job on highways not a fan of the infotainment though… One thing I’ll add here for future buyers & dog owners …the steel grill separator accessory is basically useless & I genuinely regret buying that..restricts cargo space once you drop rear seats plus has a large gaps on both sides for airbags..I think Volvo does a much better job

I actually live in Australia where the Outback is but will soon be arriving in Canada for good 🍁
goes to show...do not need the huge suv or a hopped up crossover to be roomy and rugged looking...not sold on the styling..little to busy for me.but the regular Outback wagon would be one I may look at down the road...like the looks of the interior too..if it was available on the lower trim levels they would have a winner imo..say hi to Smokey for me..
Hi Zack and Andrea! Love the channel. Will you guys be doing a review of the new Forrester Wilderness? I have one one order in white. :) seems to be a good amount of tweaks, especially with the revised CVT ratios, ride height, geolandar tires, and from what I hear a higher towing rating as well as roof rack capacity.

I like the look of it with the exception of the fender plastic. Don't know why car companies are slapping Exterior Plastic Fantastic all over as all the old Pontiacs did. Be nice to see it in a manual. Good review.
Love my Outdoor XT, funny that I went from a Toyota Venza to my Outback because of similarity and you mentioned that. My Outback feels so much better to drive then my last 2 Venza’s. Very happy with my Subaru and why didn’t Subaru keep the Outdoor trim model, $3,000.00 less to purchase not to forget it’s not as high either. Thanks for your great review 😁

Zak a lovely Star Trek uniform! Live long & prosper😂
Our 2011 outback only has 255,000 km on it…still lots of life left in it so I can’t think of buying this version. For the price this edition should have power seats in both front positions. Cross bars are extra…that stinks because all others have the built in cross bars. Still, it’s a nice car.
I ordered the 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness color Blue without Sunroof.
I did cross-shop with the Wilderness when I bought my Wrangler. It was a serious contender. But in the end, ugh, that CVT transmission is still not making the cut for me. It's a shame because the whole vehicle is a charm. But when I hear the engine screaming because of what the transmission does, I can't help it: i'm out. But! If you don't give a crap about how the transmission acts, this thing is pretty awesome.

The only thing that I don't like about screens that are vertical is how they display the rear camera. In the Explorer, it has a huge screen, but the camera is a tiny square.
Anyone else have flashbacks to the AMC Eagle?
These cars are so popular the dealerships here in SoCal won’t make any deals.
This is a product which talks to me and lots of Canadians. Kind of a rebirth of the element, but in a wagon. If u r a wilderness person, muddy mountain bikes, dogs, off the beaten road, Andrea and Zack just found ur new ride. I know others will come out with similar products soon, but just slapping and orange tag isn't enough. Manufacturers, study what this offers, study the element, and release more products like this, which has these benefits. I don't need posh SUVs which fail at speed bumps. Andrea how was the stereo, sound wise? Zack what size are the tires? U guys and from Ottawa curiso the Weiner dog r my fav Canadians on u tube.

Thank you! The stereo system is good, but nothing like the McIntosh in the Mazda MX-30 or the AKG in the new Escalade. It comes standard with 17" all-terrain tires.
What is the "outdoor" model you keep talking about? Is that a Canadian trim we don't get in the states? Do you not get the Onyx XT?
I own the 2022 outback wilderness, only thing i believe needs to be added is a built in gps
What was the closeup of the roof bars from? Those copper accents aren't on the Wilderness.
Wait, you guys are in Whistler?? Much love from Victoria!
Albertans love their subarus and vapes I see them every corner.
I was thinking if they were going to put that g-shock cladding on the front they might have well as continued up to the hood with the plastic. It kind of reminds me of 90s cars and then I thought of car bras lol.

You’re right, it won’t win any beauty contests. I generally like these but being lifted just doesn’t look right on this body style. That being said, I still like it. Lots of nice options. CVT is not a strong point for off road IMHO. Although they seem to be improving.

You say the screen is not laggy but even your clips of using the screen show obvious signs of delay. I love this new outback but Subaru needs to beef up their screen response.......
The Outdoor XT (Onyx XT) was the best value, so now they’ve upped the price. I quite like ours. The ride quality is exceptional. The downsides are the infotainment (why do heated seats require 2 steps?) and the CVT is hard to drive smoothly.
Can’t get the turbo versions in the U.K. otherwise I would have one in an instant.
I think cx50 would be a competitor

The hiked up suspension looks goofy to my eyes. The Bronco Badlands is a far better value, more capable offroad, more attractive, and less money. Ford is also offering ultra-low financing rates on the Bronco. I'll definitely take the Ford's 8 speed automatic over the damned CVT..... awesome review, glad you two avoided the BEARS!!

Subaru can promote its love for the environment or promote its disdain for the environment with its Wilderness vehicles. But it cannot do both.
