This is the most detailed and correct battery replacement video I’ve ever seen. The worst one I ever saw was they left one of the plastic post covers on and could not figure out why it didn’t work. Thank you

I replaced hundreds of batteries back in the day. It's crazy how many times I saw batteries go bad because the connections were not clean, tight or both.

I replaced the wimpy battery in my 2018 2.5L Outback with a Optima OPT8016-103 D34M BlueTop Starting and Deep Cycle Marine Battery with little modification. The Optima weighs about 10 lbs MORE at approximately the same physical size of the original! More lead guts inside! Two extra posts on the battery as well. They come in handy for me. I had these batteries in other vehicles and got 10 years plus out of them. Expensive, but they worked very well. BTW, my OE Mitsubishi alternator, a IR/IF unit is no slouch, rated at 150 amps and with a excellent performance curve across the board.

Most of the battery tender recommend the negative lead be attached to the vehicle's ground and not directly to the negative terminal. You might want to check if that is the case with your charger.

One reason is to reduce the risk of catching any hydrogen off-gassing on fire when connecting the charger (due to sparking). AGM batteries are sealed so they are far less likely to give off gas (unless maybe they are damaged). With my setup here I installed a battery charger leads which serves the same purpose of connecting the charger away from the top of the battery where gas is typically vented.

The reason to put a maintainer on the chassis rather than negative terminal is many modern automobiles have a Battery Control Module with sensor in the negative lead to chassis ground. Maintainer connected to chassis lets the BCM monitor what you are doing. My 2016 Outback battery tray was larger than the Group 24 battery. These years of Subaru are infamous for the 3G radio drain. No 3G network anymore, but they keep trying.

Battery maintainers should be connected to chassis not negative because many modern vehicles have a Battery Control Module sensor between negative and chassis. Connect to chassis lets the BCM monitor see what you are doing. My 2016 Outback battery tray was more than big enough for the Group 24 which was the exact same height and width as the OE (not same as OEM) Group 25 battery. Vendors with Flooded Lead Acid batteries and AGM do not recommend AGM for 2016 Outback. Ford has a different charging algorithm for AGM, perhaps this is needed? Not available on 2016 Outback? Vendors who sell nothing but AGM happily suggest use of their battery anyway. Subaru recently issued a recall to disable the 3G data radio which has been draining batteries since the 3G shutdown. Broadcasting high power attempts to connect to a network which no longer exists. Killed batteries for some every few days. Could pull, the DCM fuse in fuse box next to battery, but for some odd reason that disabled the microphone for hands free calling.

interesting battery deep cycle seems like a good idea once in a while somebody bumps a map reading light in car and kills battery overnight seems like it does not turn off automatically like regular door light. I get about 4 years out of the original group 25 batteries till they get weak might try a group 24 next time.

I have the 24F version by Northstar in my 2013 Accord V6 Sedan. 840CCA is a bit conservative; mine tested at 1163CCA at rest. The amount of power that this battery has to start the car, and run accessories is also incredible. I can turn my lights on before starting the car, and the crank speed and amperage is so high the lights do not dim. Even with all my accessories running (CD player at about 40% volumefront defrost, rear defrost, heat maxed out, both front heated seats on, low-beams and high-beams on, etc.,), I can only drop to 14.25v. The only exception is when the fans by the radiator kick on, which causes a split second drop to 14.05v before the alternator manages to get everything back up to 14.25v. If I'm idling and I only have the climate control and headlights on, 14.38v. In contrast, the standard 24F that came with this generation of Accord V6 was 550CCA. Very often, lights would dim and if it was below about 45 Degrees out, the car would start to have a slower crank. I get that Honda and many companies just want to "plop a battery in and call it good", but in colder climates, every bit of cranking power can be the difference between getting out, and being stuck. Highy, highly recommend this battery... and don't get me started on the puny 51R that was in the 4-cylinder accords from 2003-2017... I have an 03 accord as well, and I was going through a 51R every 12 months just due to the cold beating them up. Jason

I put a (cheaper) 51R in my kid's Civic. It is only a little larger than a garden tractor battery. I think this X2Power is going to work well in the Outback. I kinda wish I had gotten one for my '97 Land Cruiser. I did get a pretty good quality FLA battery from Interstate but it can't deep cycle like the X2Power.

@@Rickmakes Then you REALLY don't want to see the Honda Fit's battery... It's a group 151R (smaller than 51R). I liken it to a Power Wheels battery. My belief is to always put in the biggest, strongest, battery you can into a vehicle. The 97 FJ80, I wonder if that would take a 27F. The Northstar version of that is 930CCA if I recall correctly. Or maybe even a Group 31 (like what's used in Hinos, Peterbilts, etc.,)

@@ganzonomy I had to look up that Fit battery. Ha! You weren't kidding. My Land Cruiser takes a 27F. I put in an Interstate MTP-27F. Interstate labels it as "Best". They label their AGM batteries as "Premium". The MTP-27F is 710CCA. An X2Power 27F is 930CCA (so same as Northstar). I've been happy with the MTP-27F but I will probably look at an AGM when I replace it.

I tried the red and black felt disks under battery terminals a long time ago didn't seem to do anything. I usually clean terminals and put a tiny amount of copper based conductive grease for electrical wires made for connections of large wires into clamps. i wipe off extra and brush silicone grease over whole terminal and ends of wires never get any corrosion that way but it gets a bit of dust collecting on the grease. the stuff you are using looks a bit cleaner i guess it is nice and smooth after drying to not collect dirt? maybe ill try that sometime have you seen any corrosion from battery acid using that stuff?

Rick is the battery tray the same size on a 2017 Outback with the 3.6 engine? I currently have a 25 battery in it and next time it dies I would like to put a 24 size battery in it. Thanks!

  • @fubartotale3389

My 2018 Outback 3.6R's battery is fine. I have had two Subarus where the factory battery lasted 10 years. I plan on doing the same upgrade in time, but I am dissapointed that Batteries Plus doesn't honor their warranty. The fact that their warranty was longer than Northstar for the same battery was what pushed ne to choose the B.P. X2 version. I guess its easy to offer a longer warranty if you're not going to honor it. That said, I would advise against using the blue Subaru OEM oil filters. They are the cheap Fram filters with the cardboard end caps. These endcaps can degrade and break apart. All other manufacturers use metal end caps, there must be a reason. This is obviously a cost cutting measure, and I choose not to accede to corporate greed, esoecially when my engine is at stake. The JDM filters from Tokyo Roki are available on line, this is what I use and also put on my daughters Forester. Also Purolator, Wix and NAPA all have excellent filters that are superior to the blue Fram garbage. They have pre set savers that plug into the OBD port, your local mechanic should have one, save you the trouble if resetting your radio, power window and engine parameter settings.

Generally speaking AGM batteries perform better than traditional (SLA) batteries in cold weather. My car is typically stored in an attached garage. I do drive it in the winter and it does get parked outside on occasion but I can't claim it has lived in the harshest of conditions. I am guessing the battery would work as well or better than a regular battery.

Thank you for catching that! This has been up for over a year with over 5,000 views. I can't believe no one pointed that out before. I think I had group 34 on my mind because I was originally considering that size but the group 24 has a higher capacity so I went with it. Group 24 has a slightly lower CCA but either group is way above and beyond what the Subaru requires.

IDK you if you realized that for that specific battery, it said that your alternator has to be able to output 14.4 to 14.8V to be able to fully charge your while your car is running or it can reduce the life of the battery.

Has Subaru tried diagnosing the problem? It sounds like there could be a parasitic drain somewhere or maybe the alternator is bad. The alternator test is pretty easy and many auto parts stores test them for free. A parasitic drain test is a little more involved and requires troubleshooting. It is also important to make sure the battery terminals are cleaned prior to tightening them down. I've seen many issues with dirty terminals. I also have a 2017 Outback and haven't had any issues with its battery. I just replaced it because it too because it was five years old but it was still working okay.

@@Rickmakes our local Subaru shop has looked into the parasitic drain and said they've found nothing. I take steps now to reduce the drain. Step one: turn all accessories to off including the automatic on/off light switch on the column. Step two: do not leave the hatch open for any length of time, including removing groceries. Step three: only lock the doors once with the fob. Step four: keep the key fob away from the car when not driving, this includes walking past the car in the garage. Step five: start the car and let it run no less than every third day. I'm retired and don't need to drive daily, but do need a reliable vehicle which I'm not sure about now..

@@danbolton3180 Own a Subaru Limited 2018 V6. In 2020 I had the car on the side with the flashers going and that drained the battery [CAA/AAA said the battery was registering an issue and should be replaced but didn't suggest doing it then and there] I chalked it up to the pandemic - not driving enough. Ended up buying for the winter a Battery Tender and other than a PITA to have to plug it in constantly - it has worked without any concern. That following spring (2021) the Subaru dealer checked the battery - as it was covered until the end May but found no concerns to corroborate the AAA guy's findings. I have continued to use the BT even in the summer when I wasn't driving all the time - and into the winter. On really cold days without the BT I have noticed the battery light and hear the struggling start a bit but with the BT zero issues. Debating whether I will replace the battery during the spring work at my local shop or just wait until the fall (I'd rather know the battery is replaced and reliable over the winter regardless of cost). I think the BT definitely been a game changer and when I go to do the work I want to have them install the quick connection - done and written on the bill by a mechanic to avoid extended warranty issues. The larger PITA though is the Boxster - the very high rev at the start of the car - if you don't let it come down it is too fast and you impact the tranny (jolting it). The V6 definitely has a lot of pep but this starting piece has always been a concern; and especially in the winter I don't like sitting there so long to let the RPM drop. (Idle was never that high or running that long on the '07 Hyundai Santa Fe.
