i guess the good thing about RC models is you can get the weathering details done simply by taking it for a spin.

Looks great! "I'll be careful with it because I built it" lasts for a while, but eventually wears off. Then you fall into a viscous cycle of break, upgrade, break, upgrade, and before you know it, your basic Tamiya kit is sailing 5 meters in the air at 80KPH, and still going like a champ!

Well that’s something. Here’s a tip for YOU David. Try misting some water on the body before you apply the stickers. It will allow you to float them into place exactly like a water slide decal. Just put them where you want and rub the water away. All good 👍🏼

😊 this brings back memories from 20 years ago when i built one with my dad. It was 1/10 scale but i do remember the one we made did have fluid-filled suspension. Besides that, the build looks very similar. Pretty sure it was Tamiya. We ended up with a few and used to race them around car parks when the shops had closed.

From experience with a Tamiya Toyota Celica RC car years ago, what you want is a fairly smooth tarmac surface. Most definitely in mid winter and definitely with a thick layer of frost. Add working headlights for fun on a very cold winter evening. The power slides are amazing. 😊❤😊

A good looking models and these are so well engineered. I used a Tamiya 4WD model to make a 1:16 scale RC DUKW many years ago. If you are going to use it regularly keep checking the well known on-line auction sites and you can pick up broken models as a good cheap source of spares.

I have a number of Tamiya RC models - this video reminded me of building my TT-02B MS (the buggy variant of the kit you assembled here) - so much fun! One of the things I did differently was to use M3 screws, and get both left and right hand thread forming taps to pre-thread the holes before driving the screws in. Between the M3 screws and the thread forming taps, they make it much easier to assemble the kit, and are much more durable than the included Philips head screws that come in the base kit! I'd also highly recommend experimenting with their upgrade parts, especially the main chassis tub. It's cheap and so much stronger than the ABS one in the base kits. Thanks for a fun moment of nostalgia, I'll have to dust mine off now!

I've made my first one (Astute 2022) a few months ago. Still haven't driven it, but that was exactly the reason why I never bought one before... I want to build them, don't care too much about driving them. I'll wait for nicer weather, and then I'll give it a spin. Also a tip for the car body: Instead of using scissors, you can score the edges with a sharp knife, and then you can snap the excess parts right of after some bending. Works like a charm.

My first R/C Car was a Tamiya Sand Scorcher. The original back in 1982 or so. What a fun machine. Lots of brass parts that wore out really quickly though. I just finished a TT-02 chassis with a GT3 body. If you can spend a little extra, it's worth it to get the oil filled dampers and aluminum steering parts. Really improves the handling. Maybe not so important in a rally car.

Thanks Plasmo. Love your work and nice to see something most people can achieve. Your usual woirk is artistic beyond most imaginations. Built the same kit a few weeks ago. Painted a slightly less dense shade of Tamiya Blue PS16 followed by a thin coat of Tamiya Silver PS41 then another two coats of blue and finally a covering of Tamiya Black PS 5. Use Tamiya TS19 for the rear wing and singlw mirror. Three coats of Tamiya Metallic Gold TS21 on the wheels and few decals. The model pops. Blue is deep and can look varying depths of blue depending on the light. Now beginning the same TT02 model with the Audi Rallye A2 body.

Nice one :) I've been into R/C since 2004 an built several models from Tamiya, now building Tamiya trucks. A tip for the stickers: I always heat them and apply some pressure after sticking them to the body - that way they hold better to the body and won't come off easily. Also round shapes are better followed and the crinkles disappear.

@@beandean356I never use soapy water for the stickers, I first cut out the sticker I want to apply. Then I just cut out a small bit in the middle of the backpaper (I don't know how it's called) so I can set the sticker without applying it. When I'm happy, I apply the sticker in the middle, then remove the rest of the backpaper. It's the same method Tamiya tells you to do with the window masks and works very well for me.

the best way to cut any lexan body is to use an X-Acto cutter and just score the cut lines, you can then bend and break the excess lexan off cleanly and in one swoop. I rarely needed to sand after. I built a lot of these TT01's actually owned 6 of them back in 2006, nothing has really changed much since then. That Impreza 22B was one of my favorite bodies, but the Castrol Supra GT was the best... there where severak uterations of the Supra GT, my favorite is now discontinued and very rare that I sold one of my 4 bodies to a friend in U.K. for almost US$200. hehe

There are incredible rally car scale models that I would love to see you build with proper rally weathering. On events like Monte Carlo the way the cars accumulate salt and road grime gives them a fatastic patina. The likes of Hasegawa make great 1:24 models, but the Hiro Boy 1:12 cars are sensational (if expensive).

Hi, these can last a long time. I have a Kyosho Ultima from about 1990. Still runs, had to replace the old nicad batt packs with nmh ones about 10 years ago. But the kyoshos used a different wheel diameter so tires are impossible to find now, I will have to 3d print some new rims and get tires. Yes, amazing engineering goes into those.
