Who’s ready for an almighty rally car DRAG RACE?!
Mat’s in the Subaru Impreza P1, and he’s going head-to-head with another world-famous rally car, the Mitsubishi Evo VI!
They’re two very different cars, but their stats are oh-so similar. Starting with the Subaru, it’s powered by a 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that can put down 280hp & 353Nm of torque. It’s equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox, four-wheel-drive, and it tips the scales at 1,283kg.
As for the Evo, well it’s also packing a 2-litre turbo petrol engine, and while it puts down an identical 280hp, it can produce slightly more torque, at 373Nm. Just like the Subaru, it also includes a 5-speed manual and four-wheel-drive, but it’s slightly heavier, at 1,360kg.
So, it’s a battle of the gear changes, but who will be better, Mat or Yianni? There’s only one way to find out - LET’S RACE!

Ahh... back when cars had SO much soul. I remember when that Lancer was competing with my all time dreamcar the RS4 B5 Avant (same era) back in year 2000 in a Swedish magazine Teknikens Varld. Very close match, but the Audi won. I read that one like 200 times. 15 years later, I bought my very own RS4 B5 Avant. Memories

@@georkl8454 Despite my previous comment, sometimes liking a car is subjective. And if his preference is straight line speed, or more straight line based race tracks then fair play to preferring the RS4. Not everyone wants to carve up the twisties, and not every wants to be a red light speedster. Differing opinions is what gives us variety.

I actually think the time the EVO did is the actual time quoted for it when it was for sale . I have one and the guy that had it before me had like all the magazines and books on the Tommie Mak (which he gave me, the legend) , and in the Magazine ("Speed" i think it is) has its actually 1/4 mile time and im sure it was 13.6 sec. So that Evo's in good nick. Mines doing 11.5 sec, but thats from the 500hp it has (daily drive mode) the in cabin Apexi hand held , i can change on the fly , and put it up to 650hp , but ive never done it, no point, 500hp is scary enough lol , ive never actually had it a full open throttle on boost in the 6 years ive had it. 100% serious, swear to god. My old Sti my00 (yes ive owned both these cars here lol) was i think 430hp , but i used to love doing highway merges in that thing wide open throttle screaming in , sounded great , actually the sound is the only thing i miss , the EVO has better gear changes , no wierd drive train clunks , and Every thing is near bullet proof on it , unlike the Subbie , which everything was fragile. Much prefer the EVO, so do my kids actually lol. Not my wife but , she doesnt like it , she didnt like the 'Red with stickers' so i got a Silver with no stickers , which she's never driven it anyway , so i should have just got what i want. That and id be about $200k better off , because thats what they go for here in Australia lol. Only paid $20k 5 years ago so cant complain i suppose lol. Beast of a car for $20k , with about that again in mods , and then a sound system , i got a bargin.

In the late 1980s, the number of road fatalities surged. Therefore, the Ministry of Transport, which had been watching the horsepower competition of automobiles until now, also requested Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association(JAMA) to regulate horsepower. JAMA has set the upper limit of 280 hp, which is the self-regulation made by Nissan, because setting a value lower than the horsepower of products already on the market will force the specification to be changed. Since then, JDM cars equipped with an engine of 280 hp or more are no longer type-approved. However, manufacturers such as NISMO and STI, which are not members of the JAMA, have released vehicles(Nismo 400R, Impreza S202) with a maximum output of 280 hp or more, and these were treated as modified vehicles and were not subject to the regulations. That's because why '80~'00's cars have 280hp.

The Japanese speed limitor of 120 mph is probably what killed it for the evo. That thing was rocketing up to speed way faster than the subie but ran out of headroom too early. And yes given the age, wear and tear, and tolerances it’s probably banging off the limitor closer to 180KPH VS 193KPH, totally reasonable.

And it's not even in the same league visually, as the pumped guards coupe that the 22b was, Your Mitubishi Lancer was just that. A lancer. Weapons grade driveline, no doubt, but still just an ugly duckling with a bunch of electronics and a turbo under the skin. The Suby was an actual drivers car, all day. Made the noises, made you work for it, had the looks, and took the titles. STI > Mitsubishi everyday.

Seems a bit disingenuous, the mitsubishi won the drivers championship 4 times in a row, the subaru won only 1 during these 2 cars respective periods. The subaru won more constructors championships at that time over mitsubishi. But to say one is more or less superior outside of your own personal opinion on style seems a bit off the mark.

Ive owned/own both , the Tommie mak i have atm, the Subbie i sold like 2 cars ago in 2008 , my mechanic had my WRX Sti my00 more than i did , the Evo's been to the mechanics once in 5 years, and it was a cam angle sensor , which just degrade from heat, having line of sight with the turbo (you can actually buy little heat shields just for them lol) Only thing i miss about the subbie was the sound , and the interior. The Evo is near bullet proof. I love it. When the Subbie would step out on boost , it stepped out ....... when the Tommie Mak steps out on ya , the AYC kicks in and sorts it , before your brain even has a chance to react. Only happened a few times in the wet (500hp) but never got the chance to do anything the car sorted it out lol Would i swap it for a 22B though ........ shit it would be a tough choice , but , to be honest yeah id go the 22B and just drive it carefully lol both have the mad flared guards , but the 22B and the look of those 99/00 WRX's are just perfect. Actually the 22B body and interior + a modern STi engine , matched to the Evo 6/TM gear box and clutch and front mount intercooler, and its cold air intake, and its AYC..... perfect!

Needs an utter lack of mechanical sympathy to get these off without bogging down. 5500rpm launch for mine, and that is with timing retard launch control which allows me to build up to 5psi of boost at launch. Snapping axles and shattering centre differentials always a possibility. I actually drive through the water box before launch, to get some tire slip.
