Subaru Aluminium Cylinder head Meltdown Big Flames!

Aluminum Meltdown with Subaru Cylinder head Meltdown. Please check out the other Vids on my Channel For my Burners and Melting tutorials and demos.
This is the second Subaru Cylinder head meltdown with the Waste Veg oil Burner furnace. Didn't go as fast as I thought but certainly was spectacular! I used the pressurized oil flow and larger fuel lines to get much better oil flow and heat output.

    Hi Matt. Well done on the burner/ furnace. Runs real well. I looked at your Vids and I believe I may know your problem although there were just a couple of Glimpses of what I was looking to see so forgive me where I am wrong. I believe your problem is Fuel PRESSURE as against Flow. I don't think you have enough head or height on your fuel tank. I also wonder if the fuel line is a bit small and also that fuel tap may be causing restriction. Your tank is not too deep and not to high so I would suggest the first thing would be to lift it up higher or put a small pump on it or pressurise the tank a little. The pulse type pumps like on Carby Subaru's work real well. You can see the pump in this vid. kzread.info/dash/bejne/apiH1NGeY5meotI.html I have seen them on fleabay as well. I and other people have found that having a pump on the oil or Pressurizing the tank ( 3rd option) works really well for fuel control and smooths it right out. I can get great and excessive supply with gravity and a 3/8" supply line but it will not be as smooth and precisely responsive as when the fuel is under pressure. I'm sure I don't have to say make sure the lid is off your oil tank when you are running the burner because the venting may not be keeping up which would cause what I saw in your vid with the flame flare and decline. If that tank Has a separate vent spigot and the cap seals Ok or you can help it with some plastic wrap over the hole to help seal before you screw the cap on. You could tap a air bleed from closest to the blower where the pressure will be highest and feed it back into the tank. This will overcome the back pressure from the blower and should give you a fraction positive pressure as well. Alternatively, If you could put say 1-2lb of pressure on the tank, I think you would find that would certainly cure your problem. Your fuel valve will be a little more touchy but you'll get used to it in a few minutes. I pressurise my tanks where I want higher output now and it works a treat. Either try that or get your tank up high and make sure all the air is out of the line. If you have a bubble it can make the flow through the line intermittent as it tries to come back up and the weight of the oil and pressure tries to push it down then it goes back up etc. Bleeding lines when you have low head pressure is important. It's a matter of not letting the back pressure in the air feed push back on the fuel and making sure the fuel can feed straight in. Try raising the tank first and maybe going up on fuel line Size ( use clear hose to check for Bubbles) and if that doesn't work, try either pumping or pressurizing. 99% sure that will fix it and give you a very even burn. Let me know how you go mate.

    Terrific designs all! Something I've been wanting to do for a long while vs wasting my time cutting scrap AL heads into pieces on the band saw for the backyard foundry. To borrow a great phrase from you... "I've got my knickers all bunched up" because I can't find any scrap extinguisher bottles anywhere here in my neck of the the swamp to build one. I've looked everywhere. Any reason I couldn't weld up some 1/4" steel well pipe with a top and bottom cap and use that instead? Have you ever tried this approach? I have gobs of 6" 8" and 10" steel well pipe that I'm thinking could be used with the same success. Thought I'd ask your advice before I started cutting up my neighbor's well this weekend. Seriously thanks for a simple and straight forward design. Looking forward to building mine very soon. All the best! Bob, Seattle WA USA

    TheMainlinehobo Hi Bob, If I had access to 10" steel pipe, that's what I'd be using. I'm amazed the extinguisher bottles hold up so well as they do. the other thing you can use is old LPG bottles. I have a burner made from a 9Kg BBQ size and it's lasted many years. You may be able to find some of them around your local tip, recycling center or scrap metal merchants. If you have a look at my other vids, you'll see I made a perfectly serviceable burner out of dirt! When you get something running, please be sure to let me know with a link.

    Have to say I like your furnace. Simple and effective! I was thinking, that large slab of alu you end up with is a bit unwieldy when it comes time to re-melt it for casting. Perhaps instead of a stainless steel mixing bowl, a bucket or trough filled with water would be better. Then you'd end up with small manageable pieces ready for the crucible.

    +PJ Yeah, I think you are entirely correct. What I am going to do ( when it stops raining here) is Cut down a 200L drum and put a fitting in it to connect to the garden hose. I want to make the water swirl which I hope may keep the molten ally in suspention long enough for it to cool into pellets or gravel like pieces. They can then easily be measured out into a crucible for remelting in smaller, useful amounts. That said, it is cool having these huge chunks of the stuff. I want to try and melt some of it into slabs which and be machined flat and true for name plates and the like.

    Can you do this with veg oil and/ or engine oil? Would a standard furnace build minus the crucible be more efficient? Exhaust hole at the top Al drip hole at the bottom? I have an old garden leaf blower, would that do the trick for the blower?

    I like to put the inlet about 1/3rd Up the bottle. This stops the air blowing direct on any oil pooled in the bottom and cooling it. Also allows plenty of room for mixing with with air and burning of the fuel. I have put the inlets lower and the burners work and I doubt there is any ideal position. Whatever works is good!

    +Jared Fox I have mentioned it for months but still on the endless " To do " list. I am assembling bricks to build a furnace for this. I expect to melt the bricks into a big slag heap but also hope to melt the iron in the process. I don't think the power of the burner is as important as enclosing the material to allow the temp to get up to where it needs to be. Others melt iron and use much less heat than I am capable of generating.

    are you pumping oil or gravity feed? I'd like a pic of the pump. Going to put out a call on FB local community to see if anyone has the crap I need floating around in their garage. Since scrap prices suck, I might be building this next summer instead of collecting scrap.

  • @glumpy10

    @glumpy10

    8 жыл бұрын

    +TheStarforce2 Technically it's gravity fed. There is no pump but I do put about 2 PSI on the fuel tank to get the flow I want when the thing is cranked up. It will run without the tank pressurisied and I often to it that way but to really get the thing cranking I like the tank to have some pressure. The gravity feed also depends on the tank height and back pressure. I am going to tap a small fitting on the end of the blower and feed a line back to the tank to neutralise the back pressure on the fuel flow which will also allow greater fuel flow. I use a 1/2 " fuel line and don't want to go any bigger than that because it gets annoying for me to work with in a non permanent setup.

  • @TheStarforce2

    @TheStarforce2

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Oil Burner Ok, so before you made that tap you must be using a separate small fan for back pressure and then just a valve for the throttle? Speaking of fans, just how much output is the main fan giving you? It seems to be important to have at least a minimum output. That little plastic fan that seemed to be from a car dashboard on your original build video seemed to not provide much. Also, how much fuel did you expend during the 15 min this vid ran? Need to get an idea how much veg oil I need to stock pile. I got a pile of mower engines and a 55 gal drum heaped full of various alum-steel components, and at least that much piled up in 2 other places.

  • @glumpy10

    @glumpy10

    8 жыл бұрын

    +TheStarforce2 I can't answer a lot of your questions because I don't know the answers. I don't get wrapped up in details. I simply use what I have and go from there. I NEVER measure anything and have no idea of blower outputs or even how I would state them...CFM, watts, KPA??? I get a blower, I build the burner, fire them up and they work. There is no magic or special tricks to it and I don't have any way to measure all these things people ask. I probably used about 10L of oil for this burn but the consumption is not fixed and will depend on a heap of variables. Just put together what you can find and don't get caught up in details. There is no set formula for this. If you loaded the drum up and kept it full you could possibly melt down what you describe with 25L of oil. Get 50 for good measure and you'll be fine.

Over and over and over and ov.... again no matter what the vid is about, no matter how safe what you are doing is, regardless of the other 50 cry babys that have already exhausted their complete and total knowledge of DIY droning on about it.... they will tell you!!!

    P.S..... I know you don't recommend it for the kitchen, but I was wondering what your thoughts are on one being tastefully installed in the centre of the lounge? I'm thinking it would heat up a pile of bricks I've been saving to provide an effective thermal heat store and also to heat my tin bath for the weekly cleansing session. As a bonus, I would hope it would provide an absorbing conversation piece with any woman I may be able to lure in here on the sofa and also distract her from my subtle fumbling until she becomes helplessly overcome with uncontrolled desire..... {:o?

    +slurryoffagrape My suggestion is to make sure the flames don't lick at the ceiling too much so as not to discolor the paint work. Nothing more unsightly than grey ceilings when you are entertaining having high tea with watercress and cucumber sandwiches. You bathe weekly?? Wow! I thought of that but now I can say I'm concerned about the environment and saving water which means I don't have to subject myself to getting wet more than once a month or spend money on needless household items like Soap. As far as your healthy and well balanced proclivities go with the ladies, You may also be able to modify the Chimney with and indoor oil burner so the fumes from the fire are partially admitted to the room and said company becomes slightly overcome with Co2 fumes which I heard will result in hallucinations that will help with said overcoming desire. I'll have to try this with the Mrs. I keep telling her to keep drinking till I look better and become desirable but she keeps passing out before that happens and doesn't like the week she has to spend in hospital recovering from alcohol poisoning afterwards. :0(

    Nice clean aluminum smelting! We have a dark side as you might infer... Question: Have any gangs contacted you about doing an "off the books" cremation? Never personally had the need to dispose of a body. But with a larger enclosure one might dispatch the mortal remains (including 'dental records') in no time flat! Only downside is neighbors might complain of the smell of burning pot roast... :) *NO* pesky DNA evidence after a thorough blast furnace job... Surprised somebody has not approached you with this proposition. =Turning WVO into MAJOR $$$ in short order! + Or, perhaps, getting paid REAL $$$ to build a multi-gang 'barbecue system.' Would get LOTS of use, one supposes... =Sorry... One of the reasons they don't let me have much internet time here in the mental hospital. =Our *compliments* from both patients and staff! ALWAYS joy to watch your vids. One pyromaniac watches them endlessly... (He is a sickie!!!)

    OgMandin0 Love it! I have no doubt in the area I live in there would be no shortage of business either. One of my cats recently Died. I asked my Daughter if she would prefer the cat to buried in the garden or cremated. She thought for a bit and said, " You could do that couldn't you?" She elected for a burial. Firing up the furnace is certainly less physical! I was showing an acquaintance of mine some of these Vids the other day who is a fireman.Iwas thinking to myself, I wonder what this guy thinks of me and whether he wonders if I'm a pyro. I spose I am but the fires light are all for a good purpose and I am happy to admit to them! :0)

    Oil Burner Point Of Interest: IF you are not fascinated by the smell and touch of rubber, you're NOT a pyro. Pyros also have rubber fetishes. And pyros usually fantasize about the screams of people being consumed by flames. =That *ain't* you! You're just a big kid who loves his fireworks. Who the hell doesn't???

    OgMandin0 Well There you go. I thought it was only a love of fire not the other... unfortunate proclivities. One thing I would like to do is play fireman. I have a small Diesel Fire pump at home and I'd love to light up a big bonfire and then knock it over with the pump. Played with it a few times just pumping water but be fun to see how it would go putting out a fire.

    Oil Burner Fighting fire is not as much fun as lighting them. Using that diesel pump sounds like it would be pretty cool. As a kid, fighting flames with "available equipment was OK so long as I wasn't close enough to get 'sun burnt.' :)

    OgMandin0 Yeah, I don't think I'd like to be anywhere near a full on bush fire. That is not my idea of fun.

    Good day Oil Burner. I would like to know if the inlet hole for the fuel. Does it make a difference where it is on the pipe as I am getting blow back Into oil container. Please would you be able to assist me with my problem. Do you have a whatsapp number that I can send videos to for you to see my problem. Your help will be greatly appreciated

    I usually make sure the oil feed goes well into the air inlet Pipe and try to have it a bit parallel. I have never had blow back. that can only be caused by pressure in the air inlet being higher than that of the oil feed. It should simply be a matter of raising the hight of the oil container if you are using gravity feed for the oil, make a take off from the blower close as where you can to where it attaches to the burner and run that back into the oil container which will neutralise the blow back or use a pump. The pressure feed of the oil simply has to be higher than that of the inlet air and should be fine.
