Great breakdown, been getting back into this since I haven't played since about 2005

It speaks volumes about Brevik and his crew how well developed this game is that people to this day love and play the game.

The thing about speedruns (competitive ones at least) is that there’s lots of luck involved. You can find Tal Eth very early and some other uniques that make low level process very smooth, or you can get constant Magic’s and rares that aren’t even good for your class

I never watched a speedrun before and I legit though that he was going to finish normal, nightmare and hell in 1 hour. After 40 minutes I realized I probably was wrong

The craziest part is there are multiple parts where he could have saved even more time but then again he got super lucky on some maps, lol these records will never end.

This is a magical barrier, someone knows if that Summoning Salt dude is aware of this?

I think it is hillarious that Diablo does not have a spawning animation. He just plops into existence. Developers might have not thought that the player could make it over there that fast.

What a absolute legend.

This was completely amazing, when reading the title of the video I really thought that this was some lucky stuff, you know, the kind of exits/stars/doors found in diablo 1 speed runs./ but no, like llama said, It's just solid. And I found it amazing that the strat it's to farm for levels.

Love to hear that you’ll try Riftsin. Building one up now since it seems fun. I assume it’ll be worth stacking crazy IAS and Treachery is going to be mandatory now.

You should get more and more extreme with the “what’s up KZread” intro until you have gone completely over bored. Arms flailing, hair flopping, head spazzing, you falling out of chair. Developed slowly over a few months, would be internet genius

I wonder how did you get to Act 5 when the game got out since it didn't have expansion included until 1 year later ? :) I personally transferred one of my existing characters to expansion and talked to tyrael to get into Act5 Hell :)

i want to get this good at D2 iv been getting more and more into it the last couple months seeing how there isnt much modern now days that interest me when i compare a run like this to how i played D2 as a teen its crazy how bad i was lmao

I think Llama has the perfect run on his channel one guy made some mod to get the perfect run and it was like 36 minutes. maybe 2 years ago or 3.

It's kinda meh.. Finding a map that has easy access for a good exp source close to a waypoint. Then restart the game in singleplay since it doesn't refresh the game. I would have different rules for this kind of speedruns. No restarting game. So if you clear an area it's cleared.Perhaps a battle.net private game to actually get a new fresh game Maybe no buying mana potions.. Makes too easy to just skip everything with low mana by drinking potions non stop. They drop much more anyways post 1.10 (iirc).

Quick question for non-sorc classes. Is getting a teleport charge weapon/amulet/circlet a valid strat for speed running? I understand rng and gold are going to be a big factors there, but assuming you can fulfill both on one or two out of every hundred or so runs, wouldn't you be able to shave off a huge amount of time. It seems like it would at least be good in theory, even if it had to be used in bursts due to repair costs.

champion minions are worth 500% ? this is news to me, thanks for the breakdown llama. also gg slimo!

I can tell from experience that disabling all the sound in the game does benefit its performance. I used to run D2 LoD on Pentium 166 Mhz, 32 MB RAM (sometimes 16 MB RAM), 200-300 MB swap space (with less than 100 MB the game could crash), and without sound most of lags were eliminated, as well as the loading times were much shorter. It was, like, the final performance of my old gaming station. Disable sound, get 100+ MB swap space, and voila, I'm playing with power, despite the fact that my system doesn't meet the minimum requirements. Some tweaks to the windows registry could make the game act as a CD install, consuming next to none of my hard disk space, but how I learned that was another story.

How could the game even run with that CPU and RAM ? Pretty sure it would lag like hell and freeze at every big spell and mob pack.

With only 8 minutes invested to get to the jail, it will eventually become standard to just reset the run, rather than using the TCP/IP trick.

That's what I was thinking if someone got lucky and got the right jail at the start could save time. Maybe only a minute or two but those definitely count in WR runs

What if your rng is screwing with you for like 30 times in a row then youd be doing 30 8min resets. Man i hope that doesnt happen.

Throwing on some “early MF” for the Jail and boss kills has to be the eventual strat. Looks like Gorefoot can drop from Jail for 20 R/W. Hsarus boots might also be possible- conflicting info on the qlvl. Dimoak’s Hew, especially if eth would be great after reaching act 2 to get a lot more merc damage for the times you’re static’ing. Any random merc kills help with exp, and increase your odds of items to use or sell. Especially since the Andy kill happens so early, getting anything useful from her could eventually be a reset point. Start naming low level uniques/sets. Nokazon? Nagel? Razortine on a merc for the slows target would be very useful. Theoretically there will be some jewels, quickly tossing a couple min/max dmg jewels in merc helm/armor has to pay off versus the couple seconds spent equipping.

Does magic find reduce the amount of potions the champions drop? If so, wouldn't that be detrimental?

Indrek recently got Hsarus' Boots from those champions. That's a drop that is almost as good as Bloodfist. Didn't even thing you could get those boots there.

Teo said Indrek's run had sound. I wonder what would be the record between Slimo's and Indrek's if their runs were in-game time instead of RTA.

I don't think its direction of approach related but distance. how many steps char has walked. That's what I found out about farming chests, the drop depends on steps taken not direction of approach. Direction of approach somewhat dictates how many steps you take. Maybe this applies to champion tiles spawns too

Does this change how people speed run during nm and hell as well? Will people utilize the farming method on those modes?

How do you both have the game play so smooth if I may ask? When I play single player, the fps is unbearable. When I play multi player, the latency is unbearable. Is there some tool you are using? Or is it the upload that makes it seems smooth? Thanks.

I just tried this strat and spent 30minutes resetting without getting the map, so if you want to do this you'll need to restart the run A LOT until you get lucky within 2-3 resets.

Reading up on Ślimak(Slimo), as he is my native colleague..Before his great job here. He got busted on cheating while uploading speedruns like 2 years ago. But it looks like it's all legit now. I hope so. Nice showcase. You got me back into playing online Mr. Lama!

if youre looking for the ultimate run. the items that drop will absolutely make the difference. id love to see a run where you find some of the best uniques for low lvl. or some LLD gear right off the bat :)

Umm how does he keep the map layout for the prison so he always has the champions pack? Everytime I reset the game the layout changes for me://

I know I'm late to this video's party, but I only recently found Llama (of course the first video YT recommended was the Trolls of Destruction shortly after I started searching for D2R guides...). Is there a category for twinks/shared stash runs for either regular D2 or D2R? It would be fun to see a run of an optimally kitted playthrough with access to gear in the stash. Cheers!

Tal Eth druing the lvling process would be insane

You can go into your save folder and delete 'charname'.map file in the save folder to reset maps, this would eliminate the load time and shave a few seconds off the map reset.

That doesn't reset the actual map, it just clears what you've discovered in the minimap

I guess for people that ask whether anyone can do this.... Unless Llama and the other speedrunners belong to some strange alien species... yes, anyone can do it. What people tend to overlook is the amount of time & work going into something like this. Anyone can learn the tools (what to do when/ strategy/ getting to know map tiles) but only with constant trial and error will you eventually get a run that gets close or even beats the world record. (Do 100 Andariel runs and see the difference in timings between getting great/ terrible maps... it's day and night) It'd be interesting to create a mod that freezes one layout through the entire game and anyone could try themselves without having to have the "luck" factor weighing in too heavily.

I've been trying to use bing at work for a solid year now, just to say I gave it a fair shot. At best the results are less helpful than Google's, at worst completely irrelevant third-world garbage. I especially love how futile trying to "bing" a solution to any major MS Outlook problem is, when there isn't often even a relevant link on the first page, compared to just typing the problem into Google and getting it in either the first or second result. I do like their translation tool better than Google's tho.

Llama: "Bloodfist is probably the best drop you can find on this type of run." Me, watching this video while playing my sorc: finds Bloodfist in the Catacombs literally ten seconds later

They will drop but they aren't as common

At 26:50 you calculate that this record is the same time if you adjust for turning off audio. So if I see it right, the strategy of leveling+teleporting is actually not faster. The extra speed actually comes from replacing finding boss groups through walking by finding them by optimized loading. Interesting!
