So I asked on my instagram for you to submit outdated trends for me to style and you did not disappoint!! A lot of these outdated fashion trends are from the 2010's and definitely some of them were of THEIR TIME! I tried to style them in cute modern ways for 2022 so if you have any in the back of your closet hopefully it helps inspire you to create new outfits with them!

Honestly, I think we’re seeing a “jean democracy” with any style of denim being acceptable. Even now, it’s really not surprising to see straight, wide, skinny, baggy, bootcut, or flare jeans worn in public and sold in stores at the exact same time (same goes for low/mid/high rise). Sure, some may not be the hottest style at any given moment, but I don’t think they’re as passé in real life as some people on the Internet make it out to be.

Yes! This is a fact. We are not in high school in 2004 were a group of mean girls in juicy tracksuits are gonna bully you for wearing a certain type of jeans 😭😭😭🤣 ppl dont care irl. I wear all cuts as long as they’re low or a lower mid because it flatters my body.

I think you’re exactly right. I work at a clothing store and we currently sell all types of jeans from skinny to wide leg and people are buying all of them! I love it because you have so many different options to style your wardrobe with instead of just one cut of denim

This current democracy or diversity of cuts is so much better than some periods in the past (for one example) when low rise jeans were the only jeans you could find in stores. Or even mid rise was a rare thing to find and I bought mid rise because it was better than low rise but it was still too low for my taste. Having only one thing available is just bad, even if it's a thing you personally like. It won't be suitable for everyone.

“The actual enemy is Jean styles going in and out of style” AMEN. High waisted jeans are what I’m going to be wearing forever, no matter out of style they are - which I guess they currently are since apparently low rise jeans are what’s trendy now (I could never)???? Jeans are such an essential basic piece - you should definitely just wear whatever style you’re comfortable in because it’s such a personal thing to your body and comfort

I wonder if the style of jeans that trend are linked with current standards of beauty. Don’t think it’s a coincidence that when skinny jeans were in style, being skinny was the societal standard of beauty. Because skinny jeans flatter that body type. With thick or athletic thighs being promoted now, we’ve moved on from the skinny Jean. It would be interesting if we looked at whatever body type is promoted and consider what styles flatter that body type, to point to why things become a trend. Like in the early 2000s is was all about showing off the flat stomach so low rise jeans were used by models and celebrities to highlight that and then it becomes a trend. But most of us are not celebrities and fashion models so it doesn’t make sense to base our style on trends popularized by those people. We should base it on what we’re comfortable in. which is usually what flatters us. And I think despite what the Instagram feeds tell us. High waisted jeans are still very popular just like skinny jeans are still very popular. Like obviously stores are still selling the stuff because they’re featured prominently along side other styles on all of the major retailers. Like go to Madewell or Everlane and I think the majority of their jeans are high waisted. It’s still the most popular style because it probably flatters most women.

It’s funny how mainstream fashion deems these outdated when they’re very popular in alternative fashion! Specially in the goth subculture, I can definitely say that skater skirts, high low dresses and skinny jeans are super popular! High low dresses are a popular silhouette for the romantic/vampire look. Skinny jeans with rips are cherished especially in the scene and emo department. Skater skirts are very flattering on everyone and often made with spiderweb or spooky prints for example. Very lovely video! Love your creativity 🖤

I can see why some are outdated because they aren’t vintage yet but are in the past and i hated some of these trends. Im cools with skinny jeans long as theyre low rise & denim. No prints. I dont like skater skirts I prefer pleated mini ones or maxi. Id rather high low dresses just be short lmao but these styles are nice in alternative fashion. Theres always a space for every trend imo

In my personal romantic style I have a long sleeved lace high low dress that I wear over a long black skirt and Victorian style boots. I personally think it’s pretty and suits my midsize body. It’s so interesting how trends don’t change that much in alternative styling but mainstream fashion is always having an identity crisis lol

Tube tops are just a really basic top and they are often in the “basics” section at clothes stores. You can wear them with everything,

I feel like so many trends today are less forgiving and (at least mentally) comfortable than the 2010s trends. Peplum shirts, skater skirts, and kimonos were so much more flattering comfortable to wear (for me, at least) than the style now with crop tops, shirts tucked into your jeans (so you have to show your belly), tight baby tees, etc. Even cold-shoulder tops were easier to wear a bra with than the square necklines that are popular today. I really hope these come back, I still have a bunch of these laying around!

I also feel like as a teen in the 2010s I was fed much more overt messaging that clothes are flattering if they hide “problem areas”/make you look smaller, whereas overt messaging today for teens is much more body positive or neutral. So like lower rise pants aren’t “only for skinny people” bc the entire concept of what it means to look good is changing.

There’s a second hand store in my city that’s a huge warehouse and everything in $2. They have a small section of like designer stuff that they sell for more but most stuff is $2. I love going shopping there and just went yesterday. I came out with 7 pieces for only $14. It was great. And it’s also great for me because it’s hard to find a lot of clothes I like in normal clothes stores because I am not much of a fan of current trends. I also went to the Salvation Army family store the day before yesterday and I got a full on kilt for $6! From what I can tell it was probably originally like $200 and it’s still in really good condition. It’s also like my clan’s tartan so that was really cool. I love how accepted thrifting is now because you can find so many cool things.

I am not a plus size and I am more of a pear shape but I have the same problem. I never found any loose fit or straight leg jeans I could wear because they have no elasthan or only 1% in it. When I can get the jeans above my butt they will be 3-4 sizes too big on the waist😅 With Skinny Jeans or flared jeans with elasthan it is so much more easy. When they fit my booty they are like only 1size too big on the waist and with a belt you can fix it

I just recently unearthed my criss-cross bralette and I’ve been wearing it lately in lieu of buying subversive basics (that I feel like will be a quickly passing fad), so it’s such a funny coincidence that you talked about that and made the subversive basics comparison! It’s so hard to get over the feeling of wearing stuff that’s “out of style” but I find it a really fun challenge
