B seemed to have an overall more detailed sound, more clarity, and a more natural sound than A. I think A is the EN and B is the SH. That being said, it can also be system dependent as well as a matter of preference.

@@frankgeeraerts6243Hey Frank 👋🎶 Yeah, there’s a lot of inexpensive carts available today that are really quite good. That said, there’s a chance of the system can effect the sound. Some people like that etched kinda “HiFi” sound, where others are more mellow. It’s a matter of what one prefers. I know what I prefer, and from talking to you via comments for years now, I think I’m aware of the type of sound you like, and I believe we’re on the same page with that one…..

@@frankgeeraerts6243Frank, one more thing. I recently built an amp for a friend by a company that offers kits called, “Akatika”. They’re solid state amps, but the sound was quite stunning to me. It was really good, especially being driven by my tube pre, and it drove both my Tektons and Fortes with ease. After hearing that First Watt F6 amp, this was actually pretty close in sound. Just a nerdy hifi thing I thought I’d share with you, and the fact I’m still thinking about that F6 means I probably should build one for myself…lol.

Ps to me the vocals in the A sample here sound clearer but that makes it sound like an analytical sound (but that's through crappy £30 ear buds)

What a subtle way to let our ears judge the music, that's produced by these cartridges. It really makes a difference. I choose B for more a wider spectrum. I still hate the cracks in vinyl, but it sounds so much better than CD's. Vinyl has a heart and soul. So I keep playing music on physical media. Streaming does not even come close to the 'real deal'.

Downloaded the files. My strongest preference is on the Stanley... definitely prefer B. One person's muddy is another person's 'full' but I like that fullness on that song. The Cardas, it was closer, but after downloading the files, I still prefer B, but to a lesser degree than the Stanley. For the inner groove comparison, it's very close. I'm not overly sensitive to IG distortion, but I still think I prefer the overall sound of the B sample.

I prefer b in all the samples, however, it seems to me that the inner groove test is not enough severe. There are not enough sibilants or fricatives, the last b-side track of the test vinyl i linked to you would be a valid test a lot more than this, for all your wonderful cartridges. I hope B is the shibata, otherwise i did choose the wrong stylus... I always appreciated how your arc lp-1 does the frequencies between 15 and 20 Khz, there are no significant losses.

@HiFisquarepants Sorry Francisco, BTW there must has been some glitch 😁Anyway i was gently suggesting Livewire91 the same test record i suggested to you via email, the New Signals And Recordings To Test And Adjust Vinyl Equipment available on am-azon here in Europe, the last B-side track is nothing but perfect to test sibilants and fricatives. I used the ML and the SH with a very large amount of records, setting my equipment at the best i can, and i have to say that they do have a problem (sometimes, not always) with sibilants and fricatives (especially sibilants) , and especially on the inner grooves. It woluld be great if you could test that test-vinyl by yourself.

I think there is more of "Something" in the sound of the cymbals with A, that I don't really feel like I miss when I concentrate on it with B. Not enough difference for me to prefer either one. I listened to an AT microline for decades, and have only had brief experience with the XP3 that came with my new turntable. That's a difference that anyone can hear. Having seen the price difference for the stylus on the VMN95SH, I just didn't feel right putting such an expense only on the stylus with the rest of the cartridge being only worth about $20. I think it's no accident that they don't sell their cartridges alone, so you have to commit to a stylus in order to hear how much better the 500 or 700 series is over the VMN95. Once you get that VMN95SH, there's nowhere left to upgrade without the completely new cartridge. I'd guess that A is the Shibata based on its history with the high frequencies for quadraphonics, but I'd buy the cheaper one if I had to choose between the two based on this test alone.

  • @paulaj2829

It has been my experience that you CAN NOT just jump from elliptical to shibata. When I spin vinyl under my shibata that has been played with an elliptical it takes 3 to 5 plays before the record is 'deburred' and optimal grove contact is made. Just slapping in a stylus and giving it a listen is only a subjective test. Pull out the test records and test equipment then you will have something. The old school AT Shibatas' tracked much better with a tracking weight slightly over specification. With the increased grove contact area this is of little significance to record ware. I speak from experience as I have been raking a AT Shibata for over 40 years. My hearing is fading faster than my albums are wearing out.

I have the ML, but I now use it on my linn k9 body, which opened the sound up dramatically. The original k9 is also an EN stylus, which I assume is very close to the current EN you have, as they were made by AT. The sound from A is much more 3D: There is a clear separation of the instruments from the vocals making the soundstage wider and clearer. The sound from B is more muffled with considerable crosstalk and the sounds of the instruments and vocals all blend together as a single entity. There is no soundstage to speak of with B but there is this pleasant feeling you get with mono recordings as the absence of stereo gives less fatigue during listening and sets a pleasant simplicity to the sound. A is clearly the superior product as instrument separation, soundstage and details even of the vocals are overwhelmingly better than B. If A is not the Shibata then this means that there is nothing to justify its price!
