    I think Cervantes from Soulcalibur is a great example of guns in a fighting game. They’re fast, unblockable, high-damaging, full-screen projectiles, which really sells the power of the firearms, but they take a long time to draw and aim, which keeps it balanced (and makes sense for a pirate flintlock). Plus, his guns are included in a lot of his canned animations, so they feel like a big part of his moveset rather than just a one-off tool.

    Happy Chaos is kind of an oddball in that he mixes Marksman and Gun Kata with the "guy who doesn't know what he's doing" fighter archetype. As a fighter, Happy Chaos is more interested in doing cool things and having fun than any sort of practical gun methodology; he could nuke everyone with magic, but that's boring. So he found a cool gun and a replica of it and decided to try to be Clint Eastwood. His bullet meter represents a limit he's trying to impose on himself to make it more fun, and his concentration meter represents focusing his magic to use the gun as a gun. It's also why he uses his gun with such a limp wrist and has hazy accuracy; he doesn't know what he's doing with his gun or his barehanded fighting style and it's more fun that way to him. This all flies out the window when he uses Deus Ex Machina, where he decides that being cool is more fun than challenging himself. All of his bullets, even the ones he manually loads, are made from his magic, and he literally just makes them in the gun. His Take Aim takes more concentration because he's forcing himself to use his gun like a trained professional instead of just winging it, and even then because he's self-taught his aim still isn't perfect unless he makes the effort to curse his target, and because a properly aimed shot is more badass than a limp shot it does more damage. Gun kata comes in the form of his accuracy suddenly maxing out on impact from any successful physical strike and his ability to draw his gun with one hand while hitting with his other hand or doing almost literally anything else. On hit, it's cool enough that he does it without really thinking and when inflicting curse or summoning a scapegoat, it's done in conjunction with natural magic use for him so it doesn't impede his accuracy beyond the norm.

    Totally! There's plenty of great anime where characters use guns as their weapon of choice, but who could still benefit from a fighting game adaptation. One that popped immediately into my mind was "Black Lagoon". And in manga you could have "Alice in Murderland" (Not to be mistaken with Borderland). Or even Gantz. There's also the case of BTOOOM! where you'd have a create a fighting game where everyone only fights using bombs. (And not small ones at that.) But if there's anything I really want to see, it's a fighting game adaptation of Gun Gale Online. (Phantom Bullet and Alternative from SAO) Think about it: There's a great variety of characters and weapons, and the video game Fatal Bullet, introduced even more insane characters with the now clear understanding of what everyone's abilities are. Like, Sinon as the mc, Kirito, Death Gun with maybe mechanics of instant death at a certain percentage, Spiegel, WhiteRanger and that little bunny girl who're agiles af, Kureha as a massive tank who powers through projectiles, the Arf-Sys, the protag of Fatal Bullet with his grappling hook and basic pistol, even Argo who could use rumors to debuff and buff stuff, or Itsuki and Ibuki who could straight up hack the game and give themselves unfair advantages at a cost. Seriously Gun Gale Online (is my favorite part of SAO but that's irrelevant), has so much potential as a fighting game where everyone utilizes firearms but in much different ways. Sure archetypes could be more common than others, there's a surprising amount of snipers in these games, while Kirito (And Eugeo in Fatal Bullet alongside the protag), is the only one who uses a sword, but even then no two characters play the same. I want GGO to get respect! And a good fighting game since it has even more characters than Alicization. Edit (after finishing the video): This is exactly what I was talking about. Guns are expressive af, and GGO characters, while not very complex for sure, all have something different to express about themselves. Their character designs, weapons of choice, and abilities (Which you can't modify at all in Fatal Bullet apart from DLC outfits), all express something different about themselves, which is logical, because it's a MMO. They all made their avatars the way they wanted it to be. To overcome a trauma and fight as if their lives depended on it which results in an aggressive play-style with a long-range weapon, to become the number 1 player in the world but fail miserably, to get off their frustration, to simply become their ideal self, to work on a bigger project, or to live the thrill of the hunt with real people, or simply because their childhood friend said it'd be fun to reunite after all of these years for a good game together... (And I haven't even scratched the surface of everyone's motivation. Especially the AI's.) Reki Kawahara gets a lot of flake, but I actually respect him a lot as a fellow writer, both for his productivity, and for always delivering on the character design aspect. I guarantee you A.B.I, a GGO fighting game would be amazing, and even maybe expand, on the three archetypes presented here!

    "I mean, these days you can't go around kicking and punching people because... _mimes taking out a gun_ ...that's it. I don't care how good you are!" - Bruce Lee I do think that this is giving the gun a bit too much credit, though. Not that martial arts aren't largely relegated to personal training and sports these days, but while martial arts on the open battlefield are no longer a thing, they do have their uses, primarily in cramped quarters or ambush situations where fast, reflexive movement beats aiming. Knives can be just as deadly as guns and they're a whole lot quieter, and they also penetrate kevlar that could stop a bullet or two.

    In cramped quarters, you'll still want a gun. People who use them regularly in combat train on how to effectively use a firearm even when your opponent is within punching distance. And if you're close enough to stab someone through their body armor, you're close enough for your bullet to penetrate unless it's a truly weak projectile (like a .22 short). Used properly, the gun still wins. That said, no one is realistically going have access to a firearm literally ALL the time, and in some situations, you want something less lethal or less loud.

    2:15 I like the idea of the gunner character needing the concentration to aim steadily. It makes me wonder if, when fighting against a gunner character, damage to your lifebar doesn't actually represent damage to your health, but instead represents the gunner getting closer and closer to lining up that killer shot. When you get "hit" by the gun during the fight, it's a representation of stepping into the gunner's range or otherwise exposing yourself to the shot. I always thought it was weird that you could just face tank gunshots in fighting games, but I guess the "everyone is tougher in this setting" explanation makes sense, too.

  • @fieldrequired283

    I've heard it said that this was actually the original conception of HP stats in, for example, first edition d&d. It's not the number of wounds you can survive, or the amount of blood you can afford to lose, but an abstraction that represents your composure, level of fatigue, and sheer luck to avoid taking an incapacitating blow. When the fighter finally takes lethal damage from that 10th wolf bite attack, it's not that she was bitten in the neck by the wolf 10 times and only started caring on the last one. It's that after enough glancing blows and getting thrown off balance enough times, the wolf finally managed to get a clean hit on her guts or throat or something, and that's what took her out. Your AC isn't the chance that you block, dodge, or deflect the attack (every deadly strike is blocked, dodged, or deflected, otherwise you would be dead), it's the chance that you block, dodge, or deflect the attack so easily that you're not even winded or distracted by it.

    As pointed out in the video Whip's gun can only be shot downwards at her feet, but she also has, in my opinion, one of the best ways to balance and sell the power of a gun in a fighting game, her desperation super in kof 2002 has her pull out a magnum wich goes full screen and deals about 50%, but she needs 3 bars of meter and to be at 10% health or lower to use it, add a decent amount of start up and a lot of recovery to the mix and you get a well designed gun in a fighting game

  • @Hoarseplay

    @Hoarseplay

    2 жыл бұрын

    Sharon in the old Street Fighter EX games is also a good example of this: She normally fights unarmed, but requires 1 super bar to pull out her gun with ONE bullet (which can also function as an RC of sorts), and can only fire her gun by spending another bar. Due to this, her gunshot destroys other projectiles and deals 30% HP at the tradeoff of not being instant hitscan like Whip. In FEXL, Sharon's revolver has six shots and is a normal special move, however, she cannot reload in the middle of match which allows her gun to still be a bit overpowered.

  • @OccuredJakub12

    @OccuredJakub12

    It even makes sense with her needing meter to use it because Meter is used when a character does a desperation attack, or one that demands incredible strength. Guns, especially Magnums, have a LOT of kickback, and Whip isn't the most muscular fighter, relying mostly on her weapons. So, her using this as a last resort fits in, especially if she's at low health. It kinda shows that she's a bit of a sore loser. Can't beat you normally? I'll just f-ing shoot you!

    that intro into "but all of this changed" is real funny to me cause knowing a damn good bit about guns, theories and philosophies of guns have been developing for as long as guns, its just that its a technology where the theories go into its creation and design and not nearly as much into how its used cause its design pretty much tells you how to use it. but man the debate through the entirety of the history of the rifle of slow precision vs overwhelming rapid fire is definitely the theory and philosophy of modern battle, and you can definitely use it to draw paralels to fighting game characters and i very much want to do that (though i don''t know nearly enough about all the various characters to do it).

    That philosophical debate is definitely something he could have touched on, considering that the first 2 character archetypes he covered kinda reflects those philosophies. The Arsenal represents the overwhelming rapid-fire camp not in just the choice of weapons but also in the idea of throwing every weapon they have at the opponent,while The Marksman represents the slow precise rifle philosophy, even though most of them use pistols.

    Regarding the IRL discussion of martial arts versus guns, there are only a couple situations where it's not an automatic victory, but in those cases the gun starts from a holstered position, AND it usually involves a knife. For instance Myth busters tested the saying "don't bring a knife to a gunfight", and found that it was actually pretty difficult to react to an aggressive knife attack, but the longer the distance the attacker had to travel, the more likely it was for the gunman to fire off a shot. Trained individuals (military, escrima, krav maga, etc self defence systems) also tried this and arrived at the same conclusion, with the observation that in the hands of a trained knife wielder or hand-to-hand combatant, it's even more difficult. Again distance mattered, but they also found that the technique in which the gun is pulled out also mattered, pulling it out from a controlled falling motion with your leg pushing off the opponent. Really interesting stuff as I was sure there'd be no way a gun could lose in a fight.

    Joker's guns in smash are pretty fun, I guess they're pretty gun kata, letting you create instant long range hitboxes that don't have much power but keep some distance. You can dash left and right inbetween shots while on the ground or in the air, and while in there air you can spiral downwards to aim down and cover the space below you, or spin in circles to unleash fire everywhere. And when you get into his powered up state, they just get stronger, shooting more shots and launching further at point-blank. P fun imo

    I think the canonical logic that fighting game characters use martial arts instead of firearms is simply "these characters are so fast and/or strong that a normal gun doesn't pose a threat to them". If someone with basic to middling prowess in handling a pistol had to go up against canon Ryu, Ryu would probably wipe the floor with them, even if they were a decent shot. Also I don't agree that automatic/semiautomatic guns make martial arts obsolete, just more niche and not the main method of warfare. Krav Maga exists for a reason, and I imagine sometimes it is more optimal to kick, elbow, or pistol whip someone rather than shooting them point blank.

    I love guns. There are so many different ways to have fun with them. As a game designer or storyteller, they fundamentally change how combat works. Even in video game genres built from he ground up around guns, there are so many different questions that need to be answered about their functionality. Then, in things like fighting games, they demand even greater creativity, which was discussed very well in this video. I don't have anything simple to say that hasn't already been said in the video, but I wanted to make it known that I've thought about this sort of thing a decent bit and I like this video. One or two miscellaneous thoughts, I like hoy Happy Chaos basically invented magic and is one of the most powerful people in the world, but his weapon of choice is a gun. "For his neutral special, he wields a gun" has been a personal favorite for years. Over-the-top stylistic gunplay is awesome, cold efficiency is awesome, the massive arsenal from a boomer shooter is awesome, and it really is surprising how well you can communicate character with how they use a gun.

    While not a fighting game I love the way bloodborne handles guns. They’re not weapons, but tools used for parrying someone at range. A well timed shot won’t outright kill, but it will open them up for a killing blow. This opened my eyes to the way guns can be re-imagined as tools for ranged actions

(Or Magical Girl of the End/Of the Apocalypse. A perfect mess of a convoluted but dope story for a fighting game.) There's also the case of BTOOOM! where you'd have a create a fighting game where everyone only fights using bombs.

    It would be fun for a "realistic" fighting game to include a joke character who's whole deal is that he has a gun. A real gun. Like each shot does 50-100% damage and is basically impossible to dodge or block or do anything about. Like round 1 second one, you're dead and there's very little you can do to delay that. Obviously it would have to be blocked out of competitive play, but not every character needs to be for competitive purposes.

Her gun is relegated to her super, when she typically fights melee, though in Fighting EX Layer, her gun then has ammo. The beauty of fighting games allows us to explore how different styles and weapons can control space and neutralize threats, but more importantly allows us to do so in a way that ignores the consequences of fighting. Sure, a gun can kill you in one blow, but never forget that a single well placed punch can as well. Heck, in some cases, just sitting on someone while being bigger than them is a death sentence. I think as long as weapon or style can be employed in a 1 v 1 scenario, fighting games will always be ready to embrace and explore the possibilities that really can only exist in a fighting game, and that is part of what makes them so special.

    Not to take away from anything here because it's a great, interesting video... But guns are by all accounts a tool and part of martial arts. I know people forget this because there is unfortunately a lot of mysticism attached to the word due to films and games, but "Martial Arts" literally is just the "Art of War"; a philosophy in how to win battle. By all technical means, firing a nuke at another country would still qualify as a "Martial Art". That said, they definitely are as simple as pointing and shooting. Gun weebs will argue, but a monkey can kill with a gun. Gun maintenance, firing etiquette, and firing stance all become secondary to aiming and firing that bullet out of the chamber in a real life fight. We're talking about what is effectively a simplified, deadlier version of using a rock and sling to kill someone.

    Ok, the next episode NEEDS so be about pro wrestling. Like: "im gonna do a series about the portrayal of real life martial arts in fighting games! : The first episode is about guns... the second one is about wrestling... Then the third one is about how characters that fly or levitate are animated/balanced.
