Style Advice I Wish I Knew Earlier

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The path I have been on for curating my style has felt like a marathon. There have been so many highs and lows to get to where I am now, and I feel as though there are a few key things I wish I payed more attention to at the beginning of my style journey that probably would have saved me a lot of headaches and time.
What I want to share with you in today's video are a few things that I think you should focus on to make really good progress in your own style journey. So let’s talk about the style advice I wish I knew earlier!

This was a great topic. I am 70 and have done this throughout my life. As a retired person, the dress is much more casual for the most part, but I also love the juxtaposition of of various jewelry with casual dress. I have a nice variety of silver and gold pieces that I sometimes even pair together for a look. (At my age, why save them for a special occasion?) I would have to say that not a day goes by when I am out running errands that I don’t get stopped and complimented on my outfit, hair or jewelry. Even my husband has mentioned it. Be playful with your style. You will enjoy each day as you create something brand new and your “audience “ will too!

"Always use your good items" is the best advice anyone can receive, I have a childhood trauma, cause my mum got me a gorgeous pair of embroidery trainers and only allowed me to use in special occasions which means once, cause the 2nd special occasion I had they didn't fit anymore 'cause I had grown.

I really like the advice "always use your good items". Almost all my life I have been saving my jewelry for only some very special occasions. My mom also used her nice jewelry pieces only for birthdays. Last year she sent me a really beautiful necklace for my birthday and I put it in my storage for few months in order not to break ist. But then I saw a video about "using the good items" and started to wear the necklace. It made such a big difference to "see" that I am allowed to use every single piece of my jewelry or shoes or clothing and don't need to save it for later. I also don't know where I saw that advice but I am really happy you mentioned it, too. Thank you!

I love videos like this where people tell the stories behind the things they bought. We can all look at these beautiful bags and admire their beauty, then hear the story behind them and why it’s important or special to that person, like I love the *gtdupe* because it’s my first bag.

I read the original Heloise’s book (she used to have a homemaker advice column in the newspaper decades ago) and she was the one who said always use your good items for your loved ones and not to save them for company. I read her book as a young girl, and took this to heart. But this applies to your clothing as well…use your best items for YOU! I was guilty of keeping my “good” clothes hidden away. Now I wear them and get asked “where are you going all dressed up?”, lol.

Honestly Emily, I would have once said anyone with your figure and beautiful face could have worn anything and still looked good. Then you compared the white jacket and printed pants against a shorter denim jacket and the difference is very clear. Same with tucking the oversized top in the oversized pants. A lot of us hide under baggy clothes but using these simple tricks actually work to create a waistline that some of us don't naturally have. Happy birthday Nate

Love your style and your instruction. For some years I lost my sense of style, gained a few pounds and was definitely discouraged…. I like classic, timeless, comfortable and quality clothes…. Its a start!!! Thank you!!!

I think that personally I can get stuck wearing the same thing for years, sometimes we need to try something that works for someone else, we should challenge ourselves a bit. Yesterday I decided to belt a dress that I really like and it gave it a very different look, I loved it. I had seen a video in which a similar dress was styled with a belt and it looked great on the other person, I tried it and really liked it. My 9 year old daughter also gave me the thumbs up 😊

Ohhhh, this was an amazingly helpful video, Emily. Such great tips and tricks. Loved all of your outfits. I do really struggle getting my proportions right! I'm an hourglass ⌛️However, I'm only 155cm, so it's not as flattering for me (I think). I can get the bottom to look ok with heels (5 to 6cm), but the top section is always my issue. I have a short torso, but cropped doesn't always work that well for me. My hair is growing back after chemo, but it's still very short, and my face needs a fringe of some sort. I will get there, but my hair style, as you said, makes a very big difference too. Loved Fantas cameos, he is such a beautiful big ginger boy 🐈 I can not believe Nate is now 2 years old. Time flies so quickly. Thank you Emily 💗

Yay, thank you Kate!!! 💕🙏 Thinking about your vertical proportions for balance is also important and I didn't touch on that in this video. Do you know yours? Do you tend to have a short torso, and longer legs, or a longer torso and shorter legs? Do you gave a short mid-section (between your bust and hips)? Knowing all of these proportions can help as well. But petite dressing is so particular, and can take a lot of trial and error to find the right pieces. Sending love for hair growth 💕 is it coming back any different? I remember my sisters came back quite curly after chemo. x

@EmilyElizabethMay I do have slightly longer legs, now I've had both my breasts removed with no reconstruction it makes me look longer in the torso 😆 I'm now looking at a completely different situation in regard to my proportions 🙃 My hair was really wavey with a lot of curls, like my dads was. However, it's grown back completely straight like my mum! No sign of a wave or curl. I don't mind, though. The colour is what has amazed me, it's really mousey like when I was Nates age 😆 It's also baby soft 😊

🩷🙏 I would start by unbuttoning the jacket this will help you to create a new horizontal eye line with your trousers. I tend to avoid wearing “midi” jackets done up if I’m wearing long trousers, as it cuts us off in the middle of our bodies (creating that 1:1 ratio that isn’t ideal). Also, wide leg trousers tend to look quite heavy with a midi length jacket, so I would personally pair with a straight leg trouser to create more balance as well. Also, this length of jacket looks amazing with mini skirts/shorts too. Wearing a monochromatic outfit underneath your jacket will help create length. And at the end of the day it all kind of depends on your own vertical proportions too. I hope this is somewhat helpful! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ xoxox

What about stay at home mom's? I have a little one and am constantly covered in something gross. If i wear "good clothes" then I will just have to replace them frequently and that can get expensive. On the other hand, not wearing good clothes has made my self confidence tank because I feel like I'm constantly "slumming it" around the house in anticipation of being filthy by the end of the day. I still dont have a great solution to this.

I totally understand. I was there not long ago ❤️ and to be honest, it took a while for me to feel great again in my wardrobe. What I focused on was dressing for what I could handle that particular day. If I had the energy to put together an outfit that would make me feel good, I would do it and go for a little walk around the block. If I wasn’t in the mood that day then I would stay cosy and casual but still try to match my “at home outfit” (if I could). I knew that by the end of the day I would be messy no matter what, I chose clothes that I knew would wash well (no hand washing). I got a few “new” things from charity shops to wear post partum as well, that I knew it didn’t care if they got too messy but these things still made me feel good. And I also wore a lot more white compared to black. Black would show all the vomit and milk (i had a reflux baby, lots of vom!) Lastly, this part took a while but I tried to accept the season of life. This was really hard for me but I tried anyway. I had post partum depression and anxiety, I really know how hard this time can be. I look back now and I’ve come so far with the happiness of my style since then. I have a video on my channel about dressing for mums ❤️ I hope it helps too. Here it is: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nIp516atmpa8iLQ.htmlsi=UT8rtubBPo3cvnsN

@@EmilyElizabethMay I so appreciate the empathy. It truly has been a challenging season. I have taken to the only wearing clothes that wash well and can easily be swapped out. I invested in a bunch of comfy black leggings that can be swapped out for one another and shirts that "go with leggings" that can also be swapped out easily if I get filthy. Then I at least don't have to think about and hunt for something that "matched" the specific pants I wanted to wear that day or something. It's all interchangeable. That seems to have helped. I appreciate the advice of going out when I do have the energy to look cute. I will have to do more of that. Thanks for the video link, I'll check it out, I'm a new follower :)

I don’t think style is vain. I actually saved your video to watch for later, because it’s fun! Your channel looks useful and interesting. My point is rather that the use of the word “journey” is inappropriate here in my view because it should be reserved for heavier topics. It’s a rather gratuitous and distracting word to use in fashion. I’ll continue to be put off by the use of “journey” when referring to curls, style, or the like. It’s an editing suggestion. You are welcome to disregard it. Word choice is something I pay attention to, just like you pay careful attention to style choice. Thanks for your thoughts and have a nice day.

Ok I appreciate your suggestion on the word change, but what would you suggest I use instead? For me it’s a quick way of delivering my point across that I’ve gone from point A to B. Do you have another word idea? Also you said “vain topics like fashion” in your previous comment so I’m a little confused. I’m completely aware I’m not saving lives over here with style videos, but I still see personal style as a journey. It has ups and downs as our lives change and our bodies change, it can affect your self-esteem and mood, it has a huge impact on confidence, it can make you spend money unnecessarily, all these things can impact your daily life. I’m open to a word change if you have a suggestion of something appropriate 🙂 next video coming out in a week says “journey” within the first few seconds 😅😂

This is getting real deep into the realm of conceptual semantics if we were to only reserve using "journey" for important periods of growth. This micro level of conceptual semantics might suggest saying "How was your journey?" instead of "How was your trip?" (when referring to a holiday) diminishes the weight of the word "journey"...even though in formal semantics it would be the literal definition of journey-and weird to exclude from this use case. I understand that you might not want "journey" to follow the fate of the word "awesome", but the reality is: English is a living language, our use will change and grow. A journey, if you will. @@EmilyElizabethMay I think journey is a perfectly fine and acceptable word choice. From a marketing perspective, if you intend to stand out from other creators with similar topics, here are some alternative phrases you can choose from if you so wish: style education, style enlightenment, style search, style exploration

I had no idea it was a buzzword until the other commenter said that yesterday. Since then I have been trying to work out new ways to express myself for future videos (that haven’t already been filmed). But I’m trying to be honest at the same time in saying that I’m taken back in hearing it’s a buzzword and still trying to understand. Does that make sense? Of course I’ll try do better, I love constructive criticism. I don’t think I took your first comment very well because it came across accusative as opposed to trying to educate in a friendly way. I’m not out here trying to fool anyone, I’m just trying to tell stories in my videos of my own life experiences to see if it helps anyone. Always willing to improve and do better 🩷 anyway, this one has been noted. Next 5 videos have been filmed, edited and scheduled before my holiday though. X

That was my first thought as well and surprised to see it at the top of the comments. Overused buzzwords like "journey" and "blessed" and "mindfulness" really take away from the content of your speech. Everytime you opt to use one of those buzzwords you minimize yourself... Every time I hear someone use those "fake tanner" pseudo spiritual overtone words I start to feel like "this person isn't going to say anything unique that would add value... They don't even bother to use their own choice of words." Its a subconscious thing but when i stop to think about why I find buzzwords so annoying it's because its a sign that I'm probably wasting my time listening. I don't mean for that to be mean or directed specifically at the person in this video. The use of language is part of a culture. I just wish other women were more comfortable speaking their minds using their own individual voices. That being said, I'm going to stick it out for the other 8 minutes in hopes that i'm pleasantly surprised.

@@kmdn1 this is starting to make a little more sense to me. Thank you for explaining your thoughts on it. Where I’m stuck is that I’m still taken back that “journey” is a buzzword. English has never been my strongest subject, so there’s that, but in my own mind, the word journey is still the easiest way to express my point of working on my style over the course of years. Other words just feel unnatural to my vocabulary. I will honestly keep this in mind because there’s obviously something I’m missing, but I also don’t want to suddenly not sound/speak as myself.
