**There are some stupid people out there! Move the damn boat already! Were they expecting the 700 foot long ship to yield to them?** If you can't grasp the rudimentary concept of moving your boat out of the path of giant ships, then you have NO business owning a boat, and probably not a car as well.

The video started and I immediately thought, that looks like Longview. Those same Boaters also drive cars, now that is a terrifying thought.

I kayak on the local lakes. I stay along the shoreline to give the power boaters room to play. You would be amazed to see how many boats try and see how close they can come to me at full speed. My kayak has a rudder so as they pass I cut hard into their wake so i don't get hit broadside by the wake. Some days I feel like firing a warning shot into the boat.

At first I thought first small boat may of stalled. The second one was even worse. They had to see that shipped coming from a long distance. Even if the small boat had stalled they had time to row it out of the path of the ship. I’m on the water basically 24/7 and have seen a lot of stupid stuff but this is really bad. The ship can’t stop and has the right of way.

@@charlieb.4400 , International law bans anchoring in a channel. Most countries and localities also ban anchoring in channels. Ships and boats of all kinds use channels 24/7/365. Large ships can take over a mile to come to a stop, even with all engines full astern. Also, large ships have limited maneuverability, large draft, blind spots hundreds or even thousands of feet ahead and astern and many tens of feet to either side. Large ships must stay in the channel and maintain speed to keep steerage. With such limitations, large ships are clearly less maneuverable than any pleasure craft and therefore have right of way over any pleasure craft, even an anchored small boat in a channel. It is up to the owner/captain of the small boat to know the COLREGS and obey them.

i have a 50 ton master captain's license. i can say a few things with specific knowledge about this situation. any person with a boater safety card should know that anchoring or pulling a tube/skier is prohibited inside a marked channel. 5 or more prolonged horn blast means a dangerous situation is occurring. the navigation rules state that a boat inside a channel shall stay to the starboard (right) most side of the channel, which the large vessel did. that rule eliminates confusion from oncoming vessels trying to figure out which side to pass on. the large vessel is what is called 'stand on' vessel in this case. the stand on vessel, by the navigation rules, is to maintain course and speed until a point of extremis (dodge at the last minute). the boats in the channel at anchor are called the 'give way' vessels. they are to change course or speed to allow the safe passage of the stand on vessel. it is hard to see from the low resolution video, but i would suspect that if the boat were to move over, he would encounter more idiots anchored up on the other side. in which case, the capt of the large vessel would be responsible for any damage, injury, or deaths. he did the right thing. if he would have hit the small boats on the starboard side of the channel it would be the small boats fault

As a Student on his last year to get his first officer papers, you are correct. I dont think that the captain would have gotten in any trouble though, as I have a really hard time believing that they are anchored at an designated area. Furthermore they dont have shapes nor lights to show that they are at anchor.

SportSoulLife I'm I Western rivers towboat pilot, shapes are rarely used on the inland waters by commercial vessels let alone by pleasure craft operated by people with little to no basic knowledge of the rules of the road. I have herd USCG is looking into either removing shapes from the inland rules or starting to enforce it again. But we shall see. Wish you luck on your career. Hope you don't learn to hate pleasure boats as much as most of us inland guys do.

jimmy landers tubing, skiing, or anchoring in a channel is NOT prohibited. You simply “give way” to the larger ships or sail boats. If your anchored, you either pull anchor or disconnect. I’ve talked to some who have disconnected only to loose their whole anchor system. I hold an Oregon boater safety card and anchor in the channel about 2-3 Times a week on the Columbia.

But hey maybe I should have my license revoked too. Realistically there isn't shit you or I can do about someone skiing/tubing in the channel. That's up to local law enforcement and USCG. So why worry about it.

Well, if you are correct, and they are "illegally" anchored, then what you say is true. I can't from this angle see the channel marker, but I will say this, there has to be some areas that are just BARELY in the legal zone and very close to the illegal zone. For me, and most boaters, you give the boat about 80 times your size a hell of a lot of leeway, because even if you are "right" the wake alone can flip you--legal, but upside down in the water. Not to mention if the large boat IS in it's designated lane, it can wonder just a tad, once again, you might be in the right, but dead. So I just don't see why the smaller boat would insist on right of way

I almost was going to say thank goodness someone has got it right ..but .. I am the Master / Captain of many vessels all over the world and the Rules do not change in any water way. This film shows the ship is in fact a log ship navigating a narrow water way which brings in the restriction by her draft. Also her restriction to manoeuvre given the waterway and depth and width of the waterway. The smaller boats and fishermen need to be made aware of this before someone gets too close and "hurt". Maybe the local boating club can be good place to start ??

Having a fair amount of Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol experience in my LEO past, It appears obvious that some form of Law Enforcement should be out there establishing the rules and compliance! This demonstrates the complete lack of responsible actions from several agencies and from the fishers as well. Common sense would usually dictate that fishing/anchoring in a "shipping lane" could get one killed or at the very least, seriously injured....... The lack thereof never ceases to amaze! All this for either the run on Kings, Silvers or Steelhead Salmon! What these guys don't know is that these schools of Salmon will be close to shore as they run inland rivers to spawn!!! They would be catching fish and staying out of harms way...... but like the guy said...."you can't fix stupid". ;)

It's not always the small boats. I used to fish in an estuary and we were anchored about 200yards out side of the channel markers. The garbage boats would come by to dump out at sea. One day a boat came through on the shore side of us and we had to cut our anchor to escape. We all thought the dog was in charge of the bridge that day.

I've always resisted more and more rules--but I must agree with you on this, I've seen a lot of problems over the fact that if you have money, you can buy and drive a boat, with or without any qualifications. In this case though, the small boater may know the rules--but be unwise. What I mean is, if he is technically "in his legal zone" he may still be pretty stupid to "insist" against a boat 80 times his size, not to mention, as you say, the Captain may need to vary his position, in spite of any hard fixed rule to avoid a grounding. I also fault any authority that allows a tiny clearance between the areas for large craft and small craft, if you see what I mean. Small boat fishing areas should be staked to dictate that the closest a small boat can get is WAY the hell away from the shipping channel.

In Canada all boaters are required to have a " boat license" . It's a 2 or 3 hour online course . The problem with that is it doesn't show you how to operate a boat safely. It should be like cars you take a theoretical and driving tests. Our waters would be much safer this way .

The result of "Less rules" is "More buracracy" and court cases. But a lot of "I'm for less rules" supporters won't understand that. That's why a lot of European 'contracts' are so compact in relation to US contracts. 90% is ruled by law ......

Wow how stupid could those people be!!! We have the same type of people on the Mississippi river, only we have barges and not ships. People still refuse to move out of the way for the barges (barges have the right of way in the navigation channel).. It came to firing shots two years ago, a catfisherman wouldn't move to let a barge tie up... the barge gave the danger horn and then collison horn while yelling on the speakers and the boat refused to move, eventually the guy in the boat pulled out a pistol and fired at the barge. Boater was arrested by the local PD that had to launch a boat and go get him.

+Greg Sayers -- Yes, exactly: it means "danger" -- any kind of danger. So it doesn't mean "get out of my way" as the video says, and it doesn't mean "I can't maneuver" as you first said. It just means "danger," and the person or persons hearing it must decide what the danger is and how best to respond.

***** you are picking hairs. In this case the master would have used to it notify they were in danger , his decision based on he was in a channel and unable to manoeuvre AND for them to get out of the way. So whats the problem. Do you hold an ocean going masters cert ? I do !

Slightly off this topic, but still stupid boater . Decades ago boated out of Depot Bay, OR and had some association with the local coasties. There were a couple guys (sport fishers) who liked to go out fish, drink and claim to run out gas for outboards, and call the USCG for a tow in. They were cheap and didn't want to burn their own gas. You can only abuse USCG so much so witnessed said cheapskates get the full safety inspection at the boat ramp by one Rambo USCG's (he eventually went to work for the DEA), while this happening somebody placed a call to the Oregon State Patrol. As the intoxicated boater's drove off from boat ramp area onto HWY 101 into the jurisdiction of OSP in which a DUI was issued. Cost of a DUI can buy a lot gas. We all had a good chuckle at the station.

These boaters must think that the big ships are able to quickly turn and stop like their boats, so they should yield to them like any other boat. I would have moved my boat to the side of the river immediately after seeing the ship come my way. How could people be so stupid ???
