Stunts (PC DOS) longplay

Ойындар

Developed by Distinctive Software and first released in 1990, about 1,5 years before Wolf3D. This is 1991 patched version. Stunts was renamed to 4D Sports Driving for later releases. Best 3D driving games at the time were the likes of Stunt Car Racer, Test Drive and Hard Drivin'. Stunts borrows mainly from Hard Drivin', but expands further. Best thing about Stunts is the track editor, still rather unique feature for a 3D racing game. Creating new tracks and sharing those with friends was fun.
There's no campaign mode, but there are 6 originally designed tracks and 6 opponents to race against. In this longplay opponents are challenged with increasing difficulty level and with different vehicles on different tracks. There are 11 cars in total and some are barely able to make small jumps.
Opponents always receive a better or at least equal car compared to me. I was kind of hoping to at least get a little racing going, but CPU doesn't play so well. With fast cars they are either too fast to catch or just crash. With equal or slightly better cars to player they either crash or hit the breaks to max with every obstacle on the road.
Faster cars mostly seem to have better handling, but it's possible to spin any car with sufficient speed and heavy steering. Some damage physics exist and colliding with CPU slightly might break steering. Jumps are very forgiving, only by landing upside down is enough to cause a crash, but there's only a slight change not to crash when gracing a structure at slow speeds.
01:34 Race 1: Bernie - Acura NSX vs Audi Quattro - Default track
04:46 Race 2: Otto - Ferrari GTO vs Ferrari GTO - Joes track
07:30 Race 3: Joe - Ferrari GTO vs Lamborghini Countach - Bernies track
11:47 Race 4: Cherry - Porsche March vs Porsche 962 - Skids track
14:42 Race 5: Helen - Porsche March vs Jaguar XJR9 - Cherries track
20:13 Race 6: Skid - Porsche March vs Porsche March - Helens track
26:26 Level editor and few glitchy crash replays
31:00 CPU reactions - crashing both cars - player crash - CPU win without player crashing

    I’m the guy who played the role of Herr Otto Partz in this game, randomly running across this video in 2021. I was a programmer at DSI, but I didn’t work on this game other than as that character. We all loved playing this game at work. Amusingly, I’m actually 53 right now, even though I’m listed as being 52 in the game.

    @@ArchieStiglitz Yeah, all but one of them were fellow employees at DSI. Bernie and Cherry were artists, Joe was a manager and Skid was another programmer. Helen was a model/actress who was hired specifically for the game. I don't know exactly why we hired her, other than I think my boss liked the idea of hiring a professional model to be in a video game. Clearly, he was a visionary.

    Customization lessens the value of mods by the developer. It's not that big companies couldn't program that but it is lost revenue for them. Which is also why they disable split screen. Why allow four ppl to play in the living room when they can separate them in ty heir own household to buy 4 licenses to that game. This is where capitalism has failed the consumers.

    I spent so much time on it, my parents teased me by saying they would need to install a keyboard on a car when it was time to teach me to drive. My dad also spent an inordinate amount of time designing some very trollish tracks. The funny thing is that everything had the same suspension. I could take the Indy car, get it up to max speed, and then launch it off a ramp that allowed me to go over like 2 whole sections of track and land without a problem. It became a joke against the AI to set up a ramp that went to a circular ramp to go down, the AI would force itself to got slowly down that circular ramp, while blast over the whole thing.

  • @FalkFlak

    @FalkFlak

    Yeah, the physics are great in the game. We built the tracks in a way that you would hit the top edge of a skyscraper in max speed which would send you flying to the moon. The car got up about a mile high while slowly drifting out of the map (we thought it was because of the wind, lol). IIRC such a flight took about 2min. in midair. Great fun.

  • @Charistoph

    @Charistoph

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@FalkFlak, I did something similar by setting up an overpass to last about 4/5 of the length of the map, then a downramp in to a sharp turn right before a hill at the edge of the map. It is so easy to miss the turn and fly full speed in to the invisible fence. Flew so high I lost the hills of the map. I can't remember the flight time, it was at least 90 seconds of vertical travel.

This one was one of our favourites and somehow, my one friend was the only one of us who managed it - and did it twice - but he somehow crashed the crash nose-first into the ground after a jump ---- and then the car rocketed up into the sky for some reason. No idea why, but I saved an in-game replay of it. It's long gone now, sadly.

    Played this game from the day it was released probably for about 10 years afterwards. Loved it. Creating custom tracks was the best part of it haha. Also, sounds evil but I always died laughing when I heard the opponent crash in the background.

    I was 9 years old in 1994. And my dad had just bought an expensive, used harddrive from a friend. Initially intended for our family business computer. Well, turned out that hard drive came filled to the brim with, ehrm, less-than-legal copies of games. Anywho, that drive was initially destined to get wiped in order to contain a load of business bookkeping. However, that never happened. As my father and i got so enamored with some of the games on the drive that he actually bought another one, brand new, for the original purpose. This was one of the games on that drive, and ever since then i've been a proponent of cyan colored cars. Another game on that drive was Creature Shock. That game caused a young me to not be able to sleep by myself for 2 days. Scary stuff back then.

    Oh my... so many memories. That menu music is permanently burned somewhere in my brain like a cattle firebrand. I remember spending sooo much time building tracks using every single map tile available, using bridges to almost double the length of the tracks, and sometimes trying to trick the future myself inserting stuff like a building right after a fast uphill and so on. How cool was being on a bridge and seeing the track appearing under the road! Oh, how many crashes on those banked curves and on those ramps... And what about replays? Replays! Freaking awesome. Thank you for remembering me this exquisite piece of programming, you just made me realize how much I loved every single moment spent on it.

    FYI I recall a bug with the Indy car that after 2-4 jumps at max speed it would stay pinned on any terrain. This led to some interesting "stunts" with custom tracks.

    Hydrocarbon82 My friend and I would make tracks with banked transitions alternating to make the Indy jump and get locked in.. it would do somethkng like 230 and get stuck full throttle.. we found another glitch where you could drive up a hill and get airborn and fly perpetually without crashing if tou kept the wheel turned.

    Around 20 years ago I saw flyers up for a garage sale that happened in my neighbourhood that already happened. I went to the house and asked if they had the garage sale already, they did. So the person gave me a bunch of old Floppy disk racing games that nobody bought, this was one of them. Wow this brings back some memories.

    My favourite part of this game was making a mile of straight, into a ramp, then place a long row of windmills to jump over. When you landed on a windmill the spinning blades would whack you into space. I would fall to the floor laughing, and then try again and again to get a longer hang time.

    Ah yes :) I think mine in order of play after Stunts were Novell Netwars (on school network), Doom, Worms, Heroes of Might and Magic, Big Red Racer, Hi Octane, Warcraft... man, those were legendary days. And don't get me started on the original C&C. Also remember trying VR for the first time playing Heretic at a computer fair at the university I ended up attending. (Amazing how many years it still took for the Oculus to hit the market.) Defining moments for a programmer-to-be.
