    I read the description of this turntable for the first time on your website. I fell in love with him! A few days ago I bought it in Australia and now it is on its way to Poland.

    A true classic turntable from the mid seventies. Back in the day Sony had top engineering teams who took hifi serious. And it got even better in the following years.

    Hi Mike, Although I watched this video a year afterwards, the timing is perfect. A week ago I dropped off my Pioneer PL630 TT (late 70s) with a local tech for a major service. It too has quartz lock and pitch control. The unit will play fine until it suddenly slows down for a few seconds. The pitch control is out of control. Had it serviced before (cleaning pots etc.) but wasn’t done throughly like what you would do. Hopefully my new tech will come through. He did a major service on my 1977 Dual C939 top loading cassette deck which is known to be a pain in the ass (arse?) to work on. It’s running/sounding great (looks great too). As always your passion for restoring vintage gear and your presentation is second to none.

    Richard Morgan we need to redefine what a turntable does and why looks should not really matter. As for me I’m not into these direct drive tables with automatic or even semi automatic features. I’m totally into manual turntables that are belt driven with no automatic arm return or automatic startup etc..... that being said, people seem to get the misconception that because so-called vintage turntables may look better that they must sound better. I never bought a turntable based on looks. In the 1960’s Edgar Villchur of Acoustic Research invented a new type of turntable suspension, a 3 point, spring suspension system where by the platter and tonearm mount were mounted together on a T-bar so that they were isolated as one unit. This, along with being belt driven by a 24 pole synchronous motor resulted in very low rumble and wow and flutter for its time. Now, according to mr. Villchur, the turntables’ job is a simple one and is to “stay out of the picture” while playing a record. And if the turntable has low rumble, wow and flutter it will do just that. Even today’s modern Linn turntables use Villchur’s 3 point suspension design. When looking at this turntable in this video, it, because of its semi-automatic, direct drive design looks and is very complex. Certainly most of this complexity has nothing to do with getting lower rumble, wow and flutter. And this is why simple, manual, belt driven turntables always have the lowest rumble, wow and flutter, whether they be modern or vintage

    Thanx for showing sir, I'm debating right now to pick up a slightly lesser but respectable Sony PS 4300 DD Tt or the Technics SL1700 my tech friend has. We will have to repair the return mechanisms on the Sony , I'm also aware of a few power supply and electronic issues the Sony were known to develop. Wish I'd kept my old PS x6 from years ago. this is eye opening , awesome and encouraging because the PS X6 had a weird Quartz lock issue (they were only auto quartz lock no speed controls ) . Great work 👍🏾👍🏾🔥

    Impossible to say without a careful inspection because there are many variables. The crystal lock board will need work whether it works now or not and any deck this age will need a full service at the very least. Best to book her in with me if you live locally. I'm closed for business now until mid-Jan though.

    @@robertdonald7190 No problem and agreed. Some are better than rubber, these heavy-weight cork mats I use are great but there is some absolute rubbish out there, especially the stuff sold on eBay. The thick Technics rubber mats are excellent as well. The original Sony mat was toast unfortunately.

    I'm kinda surprised this Sony vintage deck was a semi auto function. It's a cunundrum why the companies design bureau wasn't given a full automatic directive option given the efforts spent by the undersides complexity. Anyways thanks for showing us the excellent service provided to the customer. This level of attention isn't cheap and unfortunately missing at most service shops. Technicians just don't want to put the time and effort. Get em in and pushem out is the general mantra.

    How thick is this cork mat?

  • @stormpork
    @stormpork5 жыл бұрын

    Love your passion & attention to detail Mike. The original platter mat is filled with a high viscosity dampening fluid, the fluid bulging unevenly towards the outside like that is a common problem on them. Apparently you can redistribute it somewhat evenly with the help of some gentle heat but I've never tried it myself.

  • @LiquidAudio

    @LiquidAudio

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Sam, thanks for the tip and you are correct, I did try to redistribute the gel, but with little success. To be honest, the beautiful new dark cork mat is probably better all round, certainly flatter, which we want. The owner will no doubt keep the original mat though and he can perhaps have another shot at flattening it out.

    Nice work and beautiful machine. I just acquired a 6750 and noticed it takes longer to stop the record spinning after hitting the stop button. At 8:50 you mentioned adjusting the braking magnets. I’m assuming you got as close to the platter as possible without it touching correct?

    Hi Lolohu, my name is Mike and I’m glad you enjoyed the video! If only electronic fault diagnosis and repair were so easy! There are many possible scenarios in both cases and rather than guess, I prefer to inspect and test equipment to accurately diagnose and then repair faults like these. Your best bet is to take the decks to a specialist familiar with them, like Liquid Audio, in your area. Our details are in the description.

  • @LiquidAudio

    Hi Dean, yes, everything that needs grease and oil must be greased and oiled after cleaning. This is really critical in these older mechanical units where mineral based greases can age very badly and cause all sorts of operational problems.
