I know they are wasps, but I never knew they could sting because of how remarkably chill they are. Like, if I see one, I won't go out of my way to get rid of it's existence. I may remove the nest because it's placed in a horrible spot, but that's about all the bad I'll do to it.

Yeah, I've never had any real issues with mud daubers. They're pretty docile. It's the paper wasps you have to watch out for since they can been pretty aggressive. They're called Daubers because their nests resemble Daub, which is a pretty ancient method of building homes out of mud and sticks. Usually seen with "wattle and daub" homes. It was used by native Americans and by the European colonists alike.

This kind of confirms it. Lived in FL most of my life and always knew these were virtually harmless. I really think you'd have to pin one down like that to get stung. I've accidentally destroyed multiple nests before while cleaning and they just fly away. Paper wasps look similar and daubers are often confused for them, and they will sting if you bug them... although they aren't that aggressive either, compared to hornets.

I got stung on the eyelid by one of these as a kid. I found a discarded metal office desk that had been dumped for some reason, in good condition to. I was curious if anything was inside of it...and yep! As soon as I opened a drawer one flew right at me and hit my eye. Reflex saved me and it stung my eyelid. I didn't even feel the sting itself and it took 10 seconds or so to feel any pain at all. I'm sure it only stung me because I broke its nest and it felt trapped in the drawer or something like that. I didn't stick around to investigate and only caught glimpse of it. It wasn't that a bad sting despite the location. I'd rate it lower than yellow jackets or carpenter bees, but worse than sweat bees. My eyelid was swollen for a few hours and after that initial burning subsided in a few minutes, it was more of a dull ache. I've been near tons of daubers and never been stung before that, or since. Carpenter bees are similarly non-aggressive and my sting there (or bite?) was because it got trapped in my shoe. That cause my whole foot to swell up and I couldn't wear my shoe until the next day.

These lived in our summer kitchen years ago. Very passive, non-aggressive, they tend to be solitary which causes them to naturally prefer to flee and live rather than sting and risk dying. I also believe Dauber is pronounced "Dah-ber" as opposed to "Dab-er". A Dauber is a "A crude or inartistic painter, or the implement used for daubing." I love this channel so much

Fun fact, they hunt spiders, and they will sting them, which will cause paralysis and they will inject their bodies to feed the lavae. They can feed on the spider from the inside out.

While mud daubers certainly look intimidating, I’ve always found they’re quite peaceable. They usually build their homes out of the way anyways so I don’t mind them too much

Make sure to remember, these wasp hunt spiders. Inside those nest, you will find dozens of spider bodies and parts. Keep them around

They can be aggressive if you go over them with a lawn mower while they're underground and they can get massive to if they eat alot

I can’t believe I watched this since I have a phobia about wasps. I am absolutely terrified of them and they constantly run me indoors during the summer. I hate the paper wasps. Those things wake up pissed off. Geez…my heart rate is sky high now.

Ive literally touched the Mud Dauber nest, with the wasp out on the nest building it up, and it acted as if i wasnt even there. Even flew in and out to gather mud while i was there the whole time, and it barely even acknowledged my presence. I dont think there is a more docile wasp than these guys. This is the first time ive ever even heard of someone being stung by one

I remember as a kid hanging out with friends, we ventured on a usual wooded area we liked to explore. I wasn't watching where I was stepping & I heard the buzz right before the 1st sting, then another, then another....... I was nailed 7 or 8 times before I got far enough away that they didn't continue the chase. I realllllly hate hornets. Honestly, I hate most bees in general because of too many stings throughout childhood & the ominous buzzing they do lol
