Stats are useful when compared in proper context. The way to compare percentages is not across eras, it's across players in the SAME era. That's the only way to get an apples to apples statistical analysis that's meaningful, given all the different variables one would need to account for. Players today are more accurate statistically...... They also have better training techniques, better medicine, better recovery, more resources, etc. And more than anything, they have the advantage of WATCHING THE PEOPLE BEFORE THEM. It's always easier to build on a blueprint... Moral of the story...greatness is defined by how much better you are than your peers.
