Studying Rob Halford. Judas Priest (And What it Means For Your Own Voice) Covering Priest Songs

When I listen to music, my ear naturally gravitates towards the lead vocals. Sometimes this makes it hard for me to have any kind of 'background music' on when doing work or talking with people because, if there's a good singer in the background, I am drawn in to the point of distraction! (haha)
When I listen to a singer that really moves me, I sometimes notice that my mouth, jaw and neck do reactionary things as I engage with what they are doing. It's like I'm internalizing what they are doing on some level, without even singing. When I go to sing a song they've done though, with their voice ringing in my head, I ALWAYS fall short.
If I have the original singer's voice in my head TOO MUCH when I go to sing their song, failure and discouragement are inevitable,
BUT, if I get a hold of a good backing track, and really jam over the songs with my own voice and all it's melting pot of influences, there can be GREAT FREEDOM and victory.
In this lesson, we get to dive into the style of Rob Halford (Judas Priest) and, over a decade ago, I had the opportunity to record full covers of THREE Priest songs. So not only are we going to dissect the masterful style of Mr. Halford (who's range, control and versatility are remarkable and set the bar really high) I also get to react to my own performances along side his.
The result is this: We get to hear how a much less experienced and less confident me, approached some challenging songs, and in the process, learned a great deal about inspiration vs. imitation. When we are inspired and then become aware of our own limitations and influences in context of that inspiration, and then we GO FOR IT with our own voice... Well... Some really neat 'merging' of styles happens.
I hope you enjoy learning as we dig in to Rob Halford and take a trip down memory lane at the same time! ...Lots to be uncovered by revisiting our roots!

@@chezbe My argument is based on a fact that Layne was also a (glam) metal singer with incredibly insane high notes which Rob is also known for. And Layne’s powerful live performances where every note was perfect and his voice could tear down a whole building speak for themselfs. One in a century. But Chester was great too, no doubt boss✌️

Ambitus, another term for range? Honest question. Agreed on Anselmo analysis some day! More because I been a Pantera fan since like age 5, haha. Chris has covered some HEEEEAVY heavy vocalists, versatile ones too, already. Anselmo is a legend, high water mark tho for sure. Especially in the CFH VDoP era. He always sounded insane obv but that era, obv haha, he was an acrobatic phenom bridging the gap between hair metal operatic + extreme/thrash/punk intensity + soulful stylings. Even the Power Metal album, idgaf! They were professional devastators, even back then. Anselmo came in RED HOT, immediately. Fit right in amongst the tightest metal rhythm section of all time haha.

Awesome content, as always Chris! You really have found a unique way to make people easily understand how to make the best out of their voices. I've tried to grasp concepts like support, mix and aggressive singing for a long time, but it was all so subjective...but your 'feeling based' approach really got the job done! I still have a long path in order to master those basic concepts, but it's great to feel like I found the path now, so thank you! I don't know if you'll be reading this, but I have a question and a request, hopefully you'll answer! Question: sometimes you refer to the 'bearing down' and 'pushing' feelings in separate when you talk about support/airflow. Are they like, different parts? Should I always be bearing down with lower muscles, even when I'm inhaling? Or am I just misunderstanding and 'bearing down'/'pushing' are the same? As for my request, could you make a video unpacking Klaus Meine (Scorpions vocals) singing style? Thank you!

Hi chris! I have a question, I've seen many live performances of rob and i noticed that whenever he goes for the high notes he points his chin towards his chest and looks to the floor. Does that actually help push out higher notes? I'm confused, I've tried doing it both ways and I only notice a difference in tone. But i can't tell if one way is better than the other. Hope that makes sense, thanks

  • @chrisliepe

    @chrisliepe

    3 жыл бұрын

He's able to do this because he's not "reaching for the note". He's literally thinking DOWN on it while honing in, mentally on his support and resonance instead of constricting his neck muscles which is what happens when you tilt your neck up to reach for a particularly challenging pitch.

Amazing how you showed new dimension of singing and how to try to find own voice. First, Rob sung from his heart and pipes so it is a bit ridiculous to try sounding exactly like him as many do, that's called impersonation and 'hey, he sounds like that'. Second, even my favorite singer I dislike many covers that he did (don't mean Diamonds and Rust or Johnny be Goode, sure, these are fantastic) bcs he doesn't sound hisown. Third, your voice built on alternative rock singers as a role models for creating yourown style (if I am free to use that term) suits heavy metal abnormally great when backed by true heavy metal music. Love vowel modifications. The trick is finding own voice 🤘 Thank you!

Halford has it all. He has the most ridiculous high end of all time, and yet, his lower voice is pretty rich, like a deep crooner also, which he gets to play with. He's just got what it takes, leaving all others but a very few to be very frustrated. Unfortunately, I think this video has the added effect of proving how hitting the notes isn't nearly enough to be a truly great singer.

You possibly took the worst songs to study Rob Halford. These songs are possibly his “simplest” and hardly shows any of his singing skills, capabilities. You should have taken songs like, Dreamer Deceiver, Run of the Mill, Dying to meet you, Blood Red skies, Savage stuff like that. No offence, but these songs are like warm up for him and hardly show 10% of what Rob Halford is all about.

No offense taken... I decided to choose samples from songs I had actually covered which is what dictated my song choices for THIS particular video, but its the only video I've done in this way. Long story short: I was assigned these songs long ago to do backing tracks for a guitar lesson platform you may have heard of... JamPlay. Check out my "in the style of" playlist to hear lots of crazy stuff :)

You possibly could try to focus more on the music itself, rather than vocal pp measuring contests. If you've watched the video, you should know how much skill it takes to even try to replicate his sound on any of these three, let alone make it your own so that it doesn't clash with the overall style. Just because a note might be "eAsY", doesn't mean that most people won't sound like shit on said note.

  • @Dreamnecronevermore

Świętosław Prozak I have watched the entire video and then I replied. But you certainly need to read my comment properly before replying. Replicating the voice is called Mimicry. There are songs which display lot more singing skills of Halford than the one owner has chosen to use in this video and that’s all I have said. Remember the title of the video is “Studying Rob Halford”.
