I'm a med student myself and I find myself asking if these people study for so long because they have poor study methods. The human brain can only focus for short periods of time and if you have good study methods (e.g. active recall, spaced repetition) you don't need 10 hours of studying regularly. To each their own I guess...

Med student here too. Honestly I can go weeks without studying much, just paying attention in rounds. I also dont go to lectures because I feel is a waste of time, and hang around hospital in stead. The last 4-5 weeks before exams I will go in to "intensive studying"-mode, where I study for 4-5 hours per day tops. Anything beyond 4-5 hours I will not retain at all. I will forget more than I learn. Its extremely inefficient.

same, the whole culture of waking up at like 4am and studying until 8pm. It makes me feel unproductive for studying even up to 6 hours a day even at A Level. If I stop or have a long day break I get this subconscious guilt, ‘******* is probably studying rn with no problem’. When I did attempt at studying 10hrs daily for a while my mental and physical health declined; I would cancel plans with friends to study, wouldn’t cook and go for processed foods because I could just pop a belvita instead of getting up to cook because I’d lose too much time. I got really disconnected with myself and everyone around me because I was so focused on school and then when it came to exams my brain just stopped. To increase productivity id listen to recorded versions of textbooks on 2x whilst brushing my teeth or cleaning. The pandemic paused these habits in their track because I had no obligations anymore and I’ve healed my relationship with ‘time’ I guess. I had the freedom to delete alarms and intensive schedules with ‘5 minute toilet breaks’. Covid as awful as it is provided a well needed pause for a lot of people (at first, third lockdown has me on my knees)

The gong-bangs (the live study with me ones) largely originated from south korea, where this is actually the norm. I studied there for a brief semester in university and they really do sit down and study for hours on end. And yeah I do think that kind of military-like study culture is toxic too but theres that very particular context of how the educational system in korea forces them to do that (SKYCastle on Netflix shows how ridiculous it can get). They have 24hr study rooms and study boxes (where you go inside this small cubicle so that theres less visual distraction). I personally never really found those gongbangs annoying mostly because I used those as a visual pomodoro because they, too, often take breaks (usually 75-15), so it was kind of nice just having these videos n the background when I had to study for hours on end for my medical licensure exams last year Most of these youtube gongbangs dont even identify/show themselves so it honestly just felt like I was going in and out of a virtual library/study room lol. I only found the study niche of youtube too annoying when western youtubers started to spin the content into toxic productivity videos like how they give advices and stuff and humblebrag about how they can do so much in a day or week lol. Bc you know theres that overt intention of them bragging haha

When I was preparing for my country's biggest test (in Greece almost everyone takes a national test at 18 and your score determines the uni you are going to) so as you can imagine this is the BIGGEST AND MOST IMPORTANT test of your life. And the truth is that I used to watch a lot of KZread and procrastinate, being "unproductive" and at our Winter and Easter vacations I didn't even studied at all. My father was like "You never study and when you fail you gona be sad and regret this attitude!" I always told him "I am not into studying right now, if I get up to study I will just look at a blank page and dont understand anything" At the end I got into Greece Capital's highest uni, into Pharmaceutical studies, huge success for me and my family, I was planning to get to a lower uni. At the end of the day the time you spent not studying will stay the same, even if you force yourself to study or not. Sorry for my broken English

I am not kidding when I say that sometimes I stop working on my essay FIVE MINUTES after I started just because it feels like 5 hours 😂 So I use a pomodoro app to help me focus and not take breaks every 5 minutes. as another medical student, I think there's this idea of what we're supposed to be like, how productive, how smart, how strong our work ethic, how dedicated we are, and honestly none of that is true! One of the things this course has taught me is that all of those things are different to everyone and there is no gold standard of the type of person you're supposed to be for you to be successful! Also, success is relative! There's this quote I love that says "medical school is for people who can't see themselves doing anything else with their lives" and while I think it can be a bit of an over-exaggeration too, I think it just means "if this is what you want to do and this is what you see yourself doing with your life then go for it!" and honestly, in the long run, your passion is all that matters. Good luck! You got this!!

  • @ambercaitlin7364

I feel like, as a medical student, there are so many expectations and assumptions of who we're supposed to be and what we're supposed to be like, and that comes from peers, lecturers, other doctors and family members. I remember getting in and one of my family members telling me I should stop meeting my friends to make sure I study enough lol. I think eventually you get to a point where you realise that the only thing you can do is your best and that's going to look different to different people and on different days and that's okay! The best we can hope for is that you work hard but within the limits of what is healthy for you and listening to yourself and what you need. Pushing yourself to be the best you can be is important for growth, but never at the expense of your mental or physical health! You shouldn't need to beat yourself up to get to the place you want to be.

I truly believe that it's so good that this topic is finally brought up. I've been struggling all my life with finding a balance, and if I'm honest, I've never found it. Since I was younger I've always had such high standards for myself, i have fear of failure and everything that comes along with that. I'm in my last year of high school and to be honest this has been the hardest year ever. Since half november the only thing I've been doing all day is studying, not joking, and when sometimes I 'cheat' a bit on my study schedule, the only thing I find on the homepage of yt are these types of videos. i even quit working out, bc 'i need the time to study'. I'm going to therapy now, because studying literally destroyed my life, my mental health and all relationships, and has made me utterly scared for medical school (which i applied for). It has made me think that the only thing i'm fit for is studying alone in a dark room, so YES thank you for bringing this up bc it needs to change!! :)

Recently I watched another one and decided to do what I did last year and the result was 3 days with no study at all! I felt terrible for a week after that. I think it depends on your situation. cannot agree with you more. I used to be so motivated by these types of videos and actually addicted to watching them on a daily basis (nearly 1 year). My study time standard has increased to about 8-9 hours that can be considered "average". and there's a fact that I'm measuring my productivity by the amount of time I study. This habit really exerts a negative impact on my mental health. I am stressed out by my thoughts that I can't be as productive as others. I even feel like I'm a loser if I can't study for long hours a day. Luckily, I realized these negative sides of this habit, so try to be more realistic and easier with myself (let me have time for entertainment, real relaxing things). Thank you for speaking up your voice about this problem. Hope that anyone who still gets stuck in the idea of "toxic productivity can find a way to get away with it asap.

Thank you for making this video Soony! I really like the way you approached this issue. Personally, some study youtubers have really helped me with my time management, and I've been able to better spend my time the way I want to, including making time for friends, family, hobbies, and academic pursuits I genuinely enjoy. I do also watch study with me's to make me feel less alone while studying haha (quarantine). But before finding youtubers that promote healthy time management, finding study methods that work best for you, and prioritizing your wellbeing, I definitely did get stressed out by all the cram/all-nighter/study-12-hours videos out there. I think a shift in focus from maximizing study hours through minimizing everything else to balance and spending your time to what's important to you is something this platform would really benefit from.

YESSIR SPEAK ON IT!! honestly this is such a problem on the more academic side of youtube and on instagram too! it’s so worrying bc i see so many young students starting uni and med school getting upset that they can’t keep with with like 10 hours of study a day on top of uni and it’s so unhealthy 😞 (also omg thank you for showing my tweet 😭)

Actually, for me, even before i started watching studytube videos, my parents pushed this kind of, "If you're not studying for 6 hours every day, you're not studying". I finished my 10th grade, and started tution classes for the Law Entrance Test that I will be taking in 2 years. And I talked to my mom about the schedule i wanted to keep from now on. With school, tution, my music classes and studying for all that - I was left with 6 hours of free time (excluding the amount of time i sleep, obvi). And she said that that would not be the case. Keep in mind that this 6 hours also includes meal times, nap times, doing my chores, etc. Like - am i supposed to be working 24/7? (Actually she might say yes to that🤦🏼‍♀️)

YES. Thank you for this. I honestly used to feel so horrible about myself because I felt like I wasn’t putting in enough work and it was so stressful. It's so important to study to the extent that YOU feel comfortable with the content, rather than competing with others. At the end of the day, hard work and success is down to quality, not quantity!❣️

It is good to hear you look at a wider vision of what a patient maybe going on in their lives as it fits into a wholistic medicine. Yes, KZread commentary is an important question you raise for your viewers with a extensive range of issues: social, family, econ., expectations, vision, pacing and so forth.... Yet, as a medical doctor you will need to ask questions, listen for what is not only said, but more importantly at times, what is NOT said so as to work with the individual/family/community you will encounter. It is good to see/hear you stepping outside the box as you progress in your studies....proud of you Soony. Not sure if others will agree with some of your remarks, but I would say, well done!

the quality matters not the quantity. finally someone is addressing this, I always look down on myself when I can barely focus for 45 min comparing myself to others which clearly isn't healthy.its important to focus on your mental health as well. if someone can focus for like 3 or 4 hours straight kudos to them but providing a trigger warning would be great. ly Soony for talking about shit that matters💛

When I was at my lowest times in terms of motivation, emotional and mental health, I couldn't watch those types of videos, even though I like them and their creators on the regularly, but at that time even their titles made me feel even worse about myself and the guilt trip was real... Now I'm better but still think sometimes I shouldn't be going out with friends, even tho I do it 2-3 max times a week.. I know they don't mean it, but social interaction and other hobbies than studying are soo important too, but when I see them barely do it, it makes me sad... And yet in general the construct of the schools and the education as a whole is too toxic nowadays. If you're not studying every day for 10h,have always the highest marks or have this "perfect memory" you are not..."good enough student".. 🤦

I love your point about younger people watching these kinds of videos, I see literal 12/13 year olds saying that they need to study so many hours a day, usually around 5 or 6 hours. but they're not even doing their gcses yet :( they don't need to study that much. it's more important at that age to develop outside of school work. also studying is different to learning, I understand that there are younger people who love learning but that's not the same as studying, where you only study what you've been taught at school. I think it's great when young people learn things outside of school and have interests that they've developed by themselves. it's when studying becomes an obligation that it becomes dangerous. I really worry about 12 year olds who feel like they need to study all the time. they will probably end up seriously burning out when they're older or won't be able to relax outside of studying.

commented this for someone else but I feel like u could also use to see it so here u go... as another medical student, I think there's this idea of what we're supposed to be like, how productive, how smart, how strong our work ethic, how dedicated we are, and honestly none of that is true! Good luck! You got this!!

i spent around 5-9 hours each day forcing myself to stay on campus to study and went into a burnout mode after. I kind of still am except its getting better and I've learned how to have certain spots to study and time for myself. The studying community on youtube glammorizes it sm that it sets these false expectations of success. It was extremely overwhelming before but I'm glad I saw this.

Whoop. I just graduated from uni. I have extreme anxiety and i needed to study more than other people to convince me that ive studied enough. I usually studied 5-8 hours a day. And i spent most of my weekends doing my assignments so i could graduate with a high gpa, which i did. But well for the amount of studying i did, it was lower than expectation😔 i did join committees and conferences to fill my resume but i deliberately chose those that take place on uni vacations so it doesnt interfere with my daily 5-8 hour studies and working on my assignments. I even quit french and piano just to study. this is why i dont have much friends in uni, doesnt help that i was bullied in hs so i was used to loneliness and studying my days away🥴🥴 due to overstudying i collapsed in my last year and couldnt even study or work om thesis without breaking down every day. so im trying to change my ways in grad school.
