After 12.5 years of grammar lessons first then over 1,500 hours of storytelling and now LingQ which registers over 3,000 words, I cannot understand conversation and am incapable of speaking. What do you think is wrong? I have spent hundreds of hours online to find a solution. Polyglots all say it can be done by anyone. So what do all of you forget to tell us? All these years in the Philippines and I still can't converse in Tagalog. Yes, I do blame all those I have known here for also not helping. Just awful.

You got it right Steve!!! In order to remember something we have to forget it!!! Now may be it sounds a bit weird but it's true. And if we continue we've come across the same thing a bit different of course and then we remember things or to be more specific structures that we thought are forgotten come back with a bit of a novelty. That' how we learn. Now the truth is, the more we try to remember something on purpose it's becoming more and more difficult. Just keep going with the language and gradually it will become clear. Some day you will wonder that what was hard to understand is clear enough.

Steve is the type of guy that I would be comfortable being friends with. He's smart and charismatic and seems like someone who would greatly inspire you to be a smarter and better person. Thanks Steve

Not to easy, not to hard. In other words it should be interesting enough to challenge us but not so hard so it overwhelms us or not too easy that it gets boring. It’s called “Flow Chart” 📈. And that’s the key my friends. 👌🏻

4:41 so true being born and growing up in Canada myself. The system is so bad with the heart in the right place.

4:05 I had to complete an English proficiency test a couple of years ago and it was completely spoken and no multi-choice at all. The whole test was recorded for marking afterwards. I turned up at a designated location, they rang a number, I was then given the phone and entered the code I was given and the test started. During which I had to listen to the question and then speak in response for the required amount of time. From memory there was around five or six questions. All of which definitely fits into what you said which is speaking is the ultimate test.

It’s always a good idea to switch between mediums. One constant I have stuck to is doing flash cards anywhere between 15-30 minutes a day. Some weeks I’ll listen to podcasts for an hour a day. Other times I’ll watch movies/tv. Some weeks I’ll get on a reading kick. Sometimes I’ll focus on refreshing grammar for a bit with certain websites and KZread explanations. Variety is key and definitely helps when you feel like you’re getting into a slump.

Stick has different meaning in English you know, we usually use sticks to walk, but here make it stick, probably it means to make words stay there in our brain so that we can learn the languange that we are learning better and successful, think that word, and reapeatition is number 1.

I’m glad I watched this. I just thought I was getting old and couldn’t remember words lol. I was drilling the information in my head and forcing myself to remember new words by “brute force” so to speak. You’re right, it’s not very effective.

What you say about learning styles might be true. But, as you've discussed frequently, motivation and interest are extremely important in language learning (and probably learning in general). If someone has a preference for particular learning style, maybe he could learn the material a different way but is more likely to lose motivation/interest if the material is presented in a way that is difference from his preference. The end result would be less effective learning even if the brain is equally capable or processing the new material.

hey Steve i had a question and it was about listening comprehension. I always have a problem with it. I’m almost a month into Spanish learning and idk if i should read and listen on LingQ or just not read anything and focus on listening or if i should do something as something is playing (but im not sure if that’s useful cause i feel like im not paying attention to it). I love reading and the “acquiring words” and i feel that my reading comp is pretty good once words get in my brain and then in different context lost but i know that’s normal and a part of language learning so I don’t think reading is a problem for me. It’s just mostly listening comp. This question is for Steve and I hope for a response from him (lol) but anybody can respond if they’d like :)

Just keep going, doing both. It takes a lot of practice. Reading is always easier than listening. I will do a video on this.

Hi @Thelinguist, do you thing its a good idea to learn different languages at the same time? I'm studying English (pretty familiar to it), Spanish (similar to my native language, Portuguese) and French (Complete new). Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

7:15 "..on trying to ace material" is it a correct usage of "ace"? "excel" or "mastering" would be better in that context?

That's right and I agree with the statement that learning is smarter, because it will definitely give rise to more brilliant ideas and innovations

This is why I study all Assimil editions when learning a language. They all are a bit different from the other.

Hey, I have a question. In your opinion, when listening to your target language, should one use subtitles? And which subtitles should they use, subtitles in the target language, subtitles in English or no subtitles at all.. or a mix of all three? As it stands I do all three and find all three seem to help in different ways. curious about your opinion on this as I've heard different things.

Subtitles in your own language when your level is low, and you can't understand without them. Sub-titles in the target language or even no subtitles when you can understand.

Don't over analyze your speaking. Just speak more. But also read books, read lots of different kinds of content, then speak without fear but with mistakes. Trust your brain.

It's a great book. But it's unfair you mention Peter Brown as the only author. He "only" wrote it up (nicely so), while the actual research was done by the other two co-authors.

Instead of 1 hour....have four 15 minute sessions, with gaps in between. Also, Spaced repitition: Study some material, leave it for a couple of days, then study it again.

Dude, I really don't understand what you're talking about. In some videos you say that we should not force ourselves to learn the language, but rather acquire it naturally. May Allah raise the rank of Muhammad in this life and the next, and protect his followers from that which he feared for them. Thereafter, More than 2000 years ago, in the blessed land of Palestine, there lived the Israelites (12 tribes that descended from Prophet Jacob, otherwise known as Israel). Among them was a girl called Maryam (Miriam, Mary, Maria) the daughter of ^Imran (not Moses’ father) and Hannah (Anna, Ann). After her father’s death she grew up in the care of Prophet Zakariyya (Zechariah), the husband of her sister Elizabeth. By the age of 14, she was a devout and righteous young female. She became the highest ranking woman in history, as stated in the Qur’an (Al ^Imran, 42): One day while fetching water by herself, Maryam was startled by the presence of a man. Terrified, she told him that he should not harm her if he feared God. He announced himself as the messenger of God (Jibril, Gabriel) carrying good news of her bearing a boy who would grow pious and sinless. The pure Maryam inquired, "How can I have a son when no man has touched me, and I am not a fornicator?!" Angel Jibril told her, "Creating a son without a father is an easy matter to Allah. Allah will make your son a sign to mankind and mercy and a blessing to those who believe in and follow him. Creating him is a matter that Allah has decreed; so it will not be blocked or changed." Angel Jibril blew the soul of Jesus into Maryam and it went into her womb. Maryam became pregnant with Jesus, peace be upon him. Later, when the signs of pregnancy became apparent on her, her cousin, Joseph[1] the Carpenter, was disturbed and did not know how to interpret that matter. If he wanted to accuse her he would remember how pious she was. If he wanted to assume her innocence, he would see the signs of pregnancy. So he asked her, "Tell me, would plants grow without seeds? Would trees grow without rainfall? Would there be a child without a male?" To all these questions Maryam said, "Yes." Then she asked him, "Did you not know that Allah made the plants emerge without seeds the day He created them? Did you not know that Allah created the trees the first time without rain? Did you not know that Allah created Adam and Eve without a father or a mother?" Joseph knew all these things and when she responded in this way, he felt assured of her innocence and that her pregnancy was something special given to her by Allah. Soon enough, Maryam went away from her people. The pangs of birth led her to the trunk of a dead palm tree. Out of her shyness from the people, and fearing they would accuse her of having done an ugly act, she wished she was dead and not a trace of her could be found. Angel Jibril called to her, comforting her. He told her Allah made a water stream run under her from which she could drink, and should she shake the trunk of the dead palm tree next to her, it would turn green and moist dates would fall down from which she could eat and be nourished. He told her when she faced her people with her son to tell anyone who questioned her about him that she had made a vow not to talk to any human for that day. That day, Maryam gave birth to her son, Jesus, peace be upon him. Forty (40) days later she carried him back to her people. They accused her of having fornicated. In response, Maryam pointed to her son, signaling to talk to him. They were angered at this and thought she was mocking them by asking them to speak with a 40-day old baby lying in a small cradle. At this, Allah made Jesus speak. He said: These are verses 30-33 of Surat Maryam and their meaning is: [I am a slave of Allah. He will reveal the Book (Injil) to me and make me a prophet. He blessed me wherever I am. He ordered me to perform the Prayers and fulfill Zakah as long as I live. Allah decreed that I will be kind/dutiful to my mother and not arrogant with a bad ending. Peace was on me the day I was born, on the day I will die, and on the day I will be raised alive again.] When Maryam's people heard that, they refrained from harming her or Prophet Zakariyya, about whom they had made ugly accusations. After Baby Jesus spoke these words, he did not speak again until he became at an age when children normally begin to speak. His speaking in the the cradle was a preparation for his coming Prophethood, when he would call the people to believe in Allah, the One Who does not have a partner and to believe in his message --that he was the slave and messenger of Allah. The first words he spoke were, "I am a slave of Allah." To God, the case of Jesus is similar to the case of Adam. God created Adam of soil. He also created Jesus. He willed for him to be and he was. It is not befitting to God to have children. There is none in the heavens and the earth but will be resurrected by Allah as a slave. The one seeking salvation must believe in Jesus as ordered by God. Jesus is the slave of God and His Messenger. He conveyed the religion of Islam and to call people to worship Allah, their Creator. Muslims believe in his prophethood and in his truthfulness in conveying that message. Prophet ^Isa is alive now, living in the second heaven, worshipping Allah. He will return to earth before the Day of Judgment and will rule the Muslims with the Sacred Law of Prophet Muhammad. Peace be upon this respected, honored and beloved Messenger of Allah. Joseph the son of Jacob the son of Nathan. [2] The elements in the periodic table are arranged in rows and columns according to their properties. In each column there is a group of elements. If you know the property of one, you can anticipate or expect the properties of the others. This is because they share similar properties. The same holds for any group of things grouped together according to a certain criterion: cars, mammals, humans, creations. However, there is no group of gods. There is only one God, Allah.
